A green deer lapping up Gruner Veltliner on the label is just the frosting. We are not shy about our affection for Hirsch and the amazing wines that Johannes is offering, and his entry-level GV really shows what this estate does from the bottom up. Hirsch 2008 Kamptal Heiligenstein Gruner VeltlinerAmong the many good things about Gruner is its versatility as a match with a wide range of foods. A classic Austrian country meal has a lot in common with our Thanksgiving in terms of mixing fruit / sweet flavors with salty and creamy - they use lots of berries, pickles, cheese, herbs, meats - often on the same plate, and Gruner marries it all. This comes from the heavier clay soils on the lower part of the famous Heiligenstein hill (famous for the quality potential of its wines, that is); the wine is a bit earthy and nutty while fresh and delicate, with lovey apple and slate-y mineral; nice length.
