Bera 2007 Barbera D'Asti Ronco MaloA brilliantly good wine and, at the risk of offending many other fine wines, our favorite Barbera, ever. The label reads 13.5 degrees alcohol, but we don’t believe it because the wine is so elegant and graceful. It has none of the over-extraction and grasping at greatness that afflicts so many Barberas. Because of its balance and finesse, we predict that this is a wine lovers of Loire reds and fine Beaujolais will also admire. We were lucky enough to drink this at the Bera’s, first with salumi, then with ravioli, and it was fantastic (but once again we learned the hard way to never, ever, ask for a second helping; there is always some more food coming...). The wine also showed beautifully at a tasting a few days later, thus confirming that our impressions were not just the result of being very well fed. JW
PS/NB: the Bera's also make the best Moscato d'Asti ever made, in case you need one.

Boasso 2004 Barolo SerralungaMore restrained and focused than the weightier and more bombastic Gabutti, this bottling shows a reasonable amount of complexity for a wine in such a youthful state with notes of bitter cherry, dried cocoa, and menthol complimented by dusty stony flavors. The tannins are present but remain fresh and supple (a trait of the vintage?) and also there's a more than compelling floral quality in the finish which adds lift and generosity. CB

Castello di Verduno 2008 Verduno Basadone PelavergaPelaverga is a local grape which was almost extinct but is making something of a come-back. It does very well in Verduno; this one comes from vines that are part of a Barolo vineyard. The wines' salient feature is a distinct peppery aroma and flavor combined with nice currant fruit; it is light-bodied, low-alcohol, and quite delicious. In Verduno it's an appetizer wine - serve it with some charcuterie. Yum. JW

When you have a wine that will age for 20+ years, who needs Monfortino? The wine is rich, dark, concentrated, but shows none of the aggressive tannin and tomato-y fruit that's so common in 2003.
