Frick 2005 Alsace Pinot Noir Les TerrassesA delicious Pinot Noir with lovely berry, plum and red currant fruit. Still a bit young, this elegant natural wine will benefit from decanting or a few years in the cellar. Biodynamic farming since 1981, organic since 1970, and very low SO2. Pierre and Chantal Frick are heroes of natural winemaking who deserve your attention... |
Frick 2005 Alsace Sylvaner BergweingartenThis lovely Sylvaner is one of the Fricks' Cuvée Precieuse - slightly off-dry with beautiful floral, spice and plum aromas and a full-bodied palate of ripe peach, with brioche and mineral flavors and a long finish. Decant and serve cool but not too cold! Another sensational wine and terrific value from the great biodynamic work of Pierre and Chantal Frick. 10 gr/liter RS. |
Frick 2007 Alsace Grand Cru Gewurztraminer SteinertFrom the hillside Grand Cru Steinert in Pfaffenheim comes this lovely late-harvest Gewurztraminer. At 39 grams of sugar per liter it has the richness of a Vendange Tardive - "a beautiful wine of meditation" say the Fricks! Floral, spice, dried fruit and honey aromas with a very full palate of spicey citrus, rose and allmond flavors. The finish is long, soft and mineral. Superb! |
Frick 2007 Alsace Grand Cru Riesling VorbourgA great but quite young Grand Cru Riesling. The aromas are subtle, the palate is very full with white fruit, floral and mineral flavors. Decant if drinking now or cellar for 5 years, or many more, for peak enjoyment. We drank a 1987 at the Fricks' home last May which was gorgeous.... |

Schueller, Gerard 2007 Alsace Grand Cru Riesling PfersigbergSubtle lime-flower and citrus aromas that become more exotic and slightly spiced, the palate is stony with with white fruits and hints of anise and caramel. There is good material and acidity here for mid-term cellaring. In short, a lovely and elegant wine that will complement a wide variety of seafood or mildly spiced asian cuisines. |

Austria Hirsch 2007 Kamptal Lamm Gruner Veltliner 1.5LSee above... perhaps even better in this festive party format! And certainly suitable for your cellar and some real aging. |
Hirsch 2007 Kamptal Riesling GaisbergTasted from tank in May 2008, this made a great impression with a really interesting and complex nose showing quince, pear, then intense peach and slate, wet stone, spice (pepper, anise). Equally precise and complex on the palate with great length and beautiful fresh acidity. Geat wine! JW |

Nikolaihof 2005 Wachau Riesling Steiner Hund ReserveI have a three check system for tasting. Of what I tasted for a week in Austria, this is one of three wines that received the coveted third check for being mind-blowingly good. Savory minerals... the finish undulates - it comes in waves with moments receding and then reapproaching. It's expansive as a novel, touching, weeping and reminiscent of world-class perfume - you know the kind with just a twinge of an attractively disconcerting quality? I also tasted a singing, yet very youthful 92 Steiner Hund Riesling Spatlese if that gives you any reference for how long these wines can age. I was given a bottle of this wine with a specialized birthday label - and I intend on cellaring quite a few more as well. This wine deserves a soft spot in your heart too. RSG |
Nikolaihof 2007 Wachau Im Weingebirge Riesling HalbtrockenOk, so we can be a little apprehensive about Austrian halbtroken, but this wine is really cool. The thing about the sugar is that it doesn't so much seem like a component, but rather is entirely integrated as if an adjective to the other flavors: sweet meadow, sweet sun, sweet rose petals, sweet orange peel. This wine should be on your table - and in your cellar 'cause it's just gonna get cooler and cooler. RSG |
Nikolaihof 2008 Wachau Gelber MuskatellerA more serious Muscat, but on the contemplative and delicate side. Elderflower, delicate minerality, lemongrass, chamomile with a high-toned verve. The last few bottles of the nervy 2008 - don't miss this bottle from Austria's greatest biodynamic estate. rsg |

Beaujolais Coquelet 2009 Beaujolais-VillagesA great success for Damian Coquelet, stepson of Georges Descombes, this is a very pretty and surprisingly complex Beaujolais-Villages showing the lush fruit and balanced acidity of this excellent vintage. Definitely worth a try at this very reasonable price! |
Coquelet 2009 ChiroublesLovely aromas of plum and cherry with hints of blackberry and violet. The palate is fairly lush but balanced by good acidity giving the wine a refreshing lightness. Lovely now, it should drink well for another three or four years. |
Coudert (Clos de la Roilette) 2009 Fleurie Clos de la RoiletteA fantastic example of the exceptional 2009 harvest in Beaujolais. As usual the Coudert has a deep meaty mineral complexity that will unfold in the coming years, but for those that are eager there is plenty of coiled dark berry fruit to be enjoyed now. JR |
Descombes, Georges 2007 MorgonGorgeous strawberry compote aromas with hints of spice, the palate is silky and balanced. A beautiful Morgon to drink over the next 5 years or so. |
Descombes, Georges 2007 Regnié Vieilles VignesDescombes' Regnié always shows darker fruit than the Chiroubles, with ripe blackberry and a deeper, tighter palate. A superb Cru Beaujolais, this will be best with another year or two in the bottle. |
Descombes, Georges 2008 RegnieThis is always one of our favorites from Georges Descombes. While lighter than the Vieilles Vignes version, the aromas are subtle and very pretty and the palate is refreshing and balanced - in short a thoroughly enjoyable Beaujolais. |
Ducroux 2007 Regnie Patience (Sans Souffre)Ducroux's Patience bottling is essentially a press-wine, although in the austere 2007 vintage the wine remains relatively light in color and body. On day one the aromatics are quite lovely showing high toned raspberry fruit, the palate has zingy acidity and good material which darkens considerably by the second day open with more black fruit and earthy flavors. A fascinating natural wine but admittedly less crowd-pleasing than the 2009 regular bottling. |
Ducroux 2009 RegnieChristian Ducroux farms about 10 acres of old massale selection vines in the hamlet of Thulon, above Regnie. He inherited the estate from his family in 1970 and converted to organic farming in 1985, later receiving Biodynamic certification from Demeter. His vineyard is blanketed in green and bears no relation to the herbicided wasteland prevalent in the Beaujolais and elswhere. Some rows have been removed to plant flowers and trees for biodiversity and plowing is done principally with his two horses. Harvesting is by hand using a horse-drawn wagon and fermentations are natural with wild yeasts. Alcohol levels are low here due to the poor soil, giving old-fashioned Beaujolais with beautiful aromatics. Not only does Monsieur Ducroux practice ecologically healthy and balanced agriculture, he makes lovely wines with pure complex fruit that we urge you to try. This bottling of 2009 Regnie was produced with zero added sulfites and has remarkably complex aromatics of red fruits, plum, spice and citrus. The palate is light and silky, with fairly high acidity and finishes cleanly. The alcohol level is a refreshingly low 12%. This is a brilliant Beaujolais a l'ancien, made by one of the most dedicated natural winemakers in France. Imported by CSW. |
Ducroux, Christian 2009 Vin de France Esquisse RoseThis unique rose is made from the secondary grapes, harvested in late October. Quite dry with light blood orange and red currant fruit and bright acidity. The finish is long - it will improve over the next 6 months. |

Perraud (Cotes de la Moliere) 2009 Moulin-a-Vent Sans SouffreIsabelle and Bruno Perraud have 1.5 hectares in Moulin-a-Vent, certified organic. The yield for the 2009 was very low, about 23 hl/ha. Vinified and bottled without sulfur and without filtration, the wine should be decanted. This is a lovely wine of terroir made by winemakers dedicated to quality through great vineyard work and vinification without additives of any kind. Please see cotes-de-la-moliere.com for more info and photos. |
Perraud (Cotes de la Moliere) 2009 Vin de France Cote de Poquelin Sans SouffreThis tiny production of Beaujolais was made from organic grapes giving yields of only 15 hectolitres per hectare. It's a rather dense wine for a Beaujolais featuring lovely dark berry fruit with an intriguing earthy component. It will benefit from decanting as it was not filtered and was made entirely without added sulfites. Highly recommended. |
Terres Dorees (Jean-Paul Brun) 2009 Beaujolais ChardonnayFrom Chardonnay grown on limestone vineyards in the southern Beaujolais, this lovely wine is one of the best values in the store. No new oak and natural vinification gives a balanced Chardonnay that's great at a party or with lighter foods... |
