Spain Table Ponce 2009 Manchuela Clos LojenFrom 100% bio-dynamically farmed Bobal, this medium bodied effort shows lot's of ripe fruit with ample earthy depth. There is a roasty and concentrated quality to the fruit that says Spain and possibly some banana elements from carbonic maceration, but I find it is well balanced with good energy and tension. To my palate, this is reminiscent of some of the low SO2 carbonic experiments in the Languedoc and the Rhone Valley and would make a strong argument to be my accompaniment to the traditional Valencian Rabbit and Snail Paella. cb |

Recaredo 2005 Peñedes Els Raustals Cabernet Sauvignon + Ull de LlAn intense, massively structured Mediterranean expression with ample dried fruits, flowers, herbs, mineral snap and length - reminiscent of Priorat in style. Drink with large grilled or roasted meats. cb |
Sitios de Bodega 2009 Rueda Con ClassThis is an undeniably thirst-quenching and delicious blend of organically farmed Verdejo (60%), Viura (25%), and Sauvignon Blanc (15%) from 6th generation grower Ricardo Sanz; light bodied and crisp with citrus, herbal, and mineral notes this is ideal for a piece of grilled fish or as the ideal picnic accoutrement. cb |

Solar de Randez, Bodegas Las Orcas 1996 Rioja ReservaFrom Rioja Alavesa this shows aromatics of bright cherry fruit complimented by an array of umami notes: dried porcini mushrooms, celery seed, onion skin, and grilled nuts. The palate is resolved, broad and tangy with tart wild blackberry flavors kicking up in the lingering finish. For me this over-delivers at it's price-point and is exactly what I want from a Rioja; a wine that is high toned, mature, and Burgundian in style - fists raised, ready for food. cb |

Telmo Rodriguez, Compania de Vinos 2008 Toro Dehesa GagoTelmo Rodriguez is a man posessed with boundless enthusiasm, passion, and knowledge of Spanish terroirs. His wines are pure expressions of their place. He told me "only bush vines, no trellises, never an herbicide, never a pesticide, and never a commercial yeast." Hey, what can you say to that? Anyways, this Tinto del Toro is made in stanless-steel and shows pure flavors of dark cherry, raspberry, dark cocoa, smoke and brooding moss-y earth . It is fresh and robust and just begs for red meats. cb |

United States Red Clos Saron 2007 Sierra Foothills Pinot Noir |
Copain 2009 Anderson Valley Tous Ensemble RoseWells Guthrie offers a full and heady Rose experience in the 2009 "Tous Ensemble." Robust red cherry fruit and a touch of rhubarb spice greet the taster. The palate is rich and full with succulent fruit, a perfect fit for rose drinkers who shy away from more austere offerings. JR |

Coturri 2002 Lost Creek Vineyards Pinot Noir |
Coturri 2006 Sonoma Mountain Zinfandel EstateTony Coturri is a "maverick" wine maker, and has never found a need to add yeasts or preservatives. He believes that his wines should be a unique reflection of the vintage. In 2006 Sonoma experienced a cooler year, and therefore this Zin is a bit less ripe and sweet than previous years. Tony feels that this is a Cabernet drinker's Zin because of the spicy pepper tanins and dark fruits. Coturri wines are unfiltered, and may contain sediment. It is advisable that you decant in order to enjoy one of America's most natural wines. JR |
Dashe 2009 Potter Valley McFadden Farms L'Enfant Terrible ZinfandelWow! A whole different idea in Zinfandel - organically grown grapes and wild yeast fermentation, less alcohol, more natural acidity, lovely fruit - "real wine" from California! And it tastes great! rsg The 2009 is fermented and aged in foudre. This wine has a deeper pitch than the other bottling, more plum. It is very energetic on the palate with a rich fruit filled finish. cb |

Donkey & a Goat 2008 El Dorado Four Thirteen |
Donkey and Goat 2009 McDowell Valley Rose Isabel's Cuvée GrenacheA small production from the non-interventionists at A Donkey and Goat Winery in Berkeley. Crafted from Grenache Gris in south-eastern Mendocino County, the wine is bottled completely unfiltered. Because of this there is a healthy deposit of sediment and other "floaties." For an interesting read on this check out this Donkey and Goat web article. Besides its arresting appearance, the wine has plenty of berry and citrus flavor with spice. JR |

Edmunds St. John 2008 El Dorado Barsotti Ranch Porphyry Gamay NoirSourced from 15 year Gamay Vines in the granite soils of the 3,000 foot high Barsotti Ranch in El Dorado. A very compelling argument for the continued cultivation of Beaujolais' signature variety in cool-climate California. A moderately rich style Gamay with bold flavors of plum and dark raspberry. Also some very pleasant earthy minerality and sweet tannins. JR |
Edmunds St. John 2008 El Dorardo County Witters Vineyard Bone-Jolly GamayWhen the temperature and humidity here in New York begins to rise, rest assured Steve Edmund's Bone Jolly Gamay will be a cooling breeze. Or gulp! From volcanic soils 3,400 feet high in El Dorado comes a truly refreshing Gamay with high-toned berry fruits and plenty of tangy acidity. Best served cool with anything from spicy barbecue to simple roasts. JR |
Heller Estate 2007 Carmel Valley CachaguaThe name "Cachagua" is believed to be a derivative of the words "cacher" and "agua" meaning ‘hidden water,’ referring to the water deep beneath the surface of the soil at this estate – which makes it possible for Heller to forgo irrigation. These naturally made wines represent the essence of Carmel Valley fruit. The aromatics leap out of the glass with purple fruits - bright blackberry, with a touch of classic Cabernet Sauvignon cassis. Herbaceous with black peppercorn notes this round, lightly tannic Cab/Merlot blend is both true to the ripeness of California fruit, but maintains balance and grace. A unique domestic offering. RSG |

Porter Creek 2007 Old Vine Sonoma ZinfandelA very fine Zinfandel that combines classic boisterous red berry fruit with a contrasting acidity that is reminiscent of the balance achieved in great southern Italian wine. This was an absolute joy to drink with barbecue chicken, and surely would liven up many grilled meals. Porter Creek is a standard bearer for natural wines in Sonoma using exclusively native yeasts for fermentation, organic practices in the vineyard, and only a judicious amount of French oak. JR |

United States White Arnot-Roberts 2009 Napa Valley Chardonnay Green Island VineyaFrom two very cool vineyards, fermented with native yeasts, and aged for just 6 months in neutral oak, yields a Chardonnay that weighs in at just 12.4% alcohol. 20% of the wine goes through malo-lactic. The result is a lovely wine that shows rich yet restrained aromas of red apple, toasted rice (cereal-like), sea salt, and fresh fennel. There is also a candied lemon quality to the fruit. The palate is rich, precise, and finely etched. Finishing complex, long, and lingering with toasty notes and mineral qualities. An extremely well made Chardonnay. Blind-tasted, I would never have guessed California. cb |
Copain 2008 Mendocino Viognier Tous EnsembleWells Guthrie is hands down making the best Viognier for the money in California. It is perfectly balanced between acidity and aromatics with none of that cloying character that gives this style of wine a bad name. cb |
Edmunds St. John 2004 Paso Robles Tablas Creek Vineyard RoussaneGrapes sourced from the Perrin brothers' applauded Roussane vineyards in the clay/limestone soils of Tables Creek. Although by no means a light wine, instead of fruit it really speaks of stony mineral. Good acidity and a bit of dry honey and citrus combine for a complex and interesting success story for the Rhone Rangers. JR |
Frog's Leap 2009 Rutherford Napa Valley Sauvignon BlancThis long time sustainable, dry-farming estate in Napa makes wonderful wines as true to Rutherford terroir as it gets. This delightful Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and bright with notes of fresh grass and herbs, the fruit is balanced with a minerality rarely seen in California wines. Delicious. |
Gruet New Mexico Blanc de NoirsThe rich and toasty character of this Blanc de Noirs is balanced and superb. Aged for two-year minimum, the palate is developed and shows rich complex flavors. The amazing berries aromas and the creamy texture play a leading role and create a great finesse. Winemaker's Note: A fine salmon color, aggressive mousse and a lovely fruity wine with plenty of immediate charm and toasty aromas. There is also an explosive juicy flavor of raspberry. |
