Alsace

Schueller, Gerard 2005 Alsace Gewurztraminer Particulière

Lychee, grapefruit, some mineral, red fruits and the flamboyant nose. Nose is a bit broad but still nice. Not too sweet but still mouthcoating and rich with all types of citrus and pineapple fruit. Lovely and pure. Would go great with Indian food.

Austria

Berger 2009 Kremstal Gruner Veltliner (Liter)

Hot and humid summer days require more than 750ml of Gruner Veltliner. Luckily the Austrian wine-makers have leapt to the demand and offer many well priced one liter bottles. Berger offers more concentration of fruit than many of the competitors, and even shows a touch of minerality. For those uninitiated to the pleasures of Gruner, expect a fairly rich but crisp fruity wine that can handle a variety of foods even tricky vegetable dishes like asparagus. JR

This is the first white Bordeaux made by the Hubert family at Chateau Peybonhomme - only 100 cases were made and 50 are coming to Chambers Street! It's quite full-bodied with delicious spicy white fruits and lovely subtle aromatics. A great aperitif for summer and a fabulous bargain at $11.99!!!

Hauner 2009 Salina Bianco IGT

Crisp, rich, salty - aromas of green apple and flowers and stone - flavors of almond, capers, grapefruit rind - a really tasty wine made from the local grapes Inzolia and Cataratto - neither famous for distinctive wines but here this is something really quite distinguished, vivid, refreshing and with great character - and an amazing buy! JW

Loire

Guion 2008 Bourgueil Cuvee Domaine

Very pretty and bright red fruit aromas (strawberry, cherry, red-currant), medium bodied, very well balanced. Refreshing, with lovely pure fruit, avoids the excess concentration and acidity of some 2008 Loire reds. This wines tastes of the soil! A beautiful and well-priced Cabernet Franc that shows the benefits of two generations of organic farming, hand harvesting, wild yeasts, and minimal sulfites - bravo to the Guions! DL

Guion 2009 Bourgueil Rose

The Guion rosé is here! 2009 is dry and very light with subtle spice and strawberry fruit. 100% Cabernet Franc that finishes like a white wine with all of the characteristic acidity of Stephane's wines. A yummy wine at a fabulous direct-import price!

Luneau-Papin 2008 Gros Plant du Pays Nantais Vieille Vignes

A blend including the local grape Negrette, along with Gamay and Syrah- this is an intriguing dry rose with berry fruit and hints of earth and spice - an excellent value. Navarre 2009 Vin de Table de France Vin d'Oeillades

red | 25 in stock | Natural | $11.99

Navarre 2009 Vin de Table de France Vin d'Oeillades Rose

We met Thierry Navarre at a natural wine show in France and were struck by the purity and freshness of his wines. This rosé is made from Oeillades, an old variety of the Languedoc related to Cinsault, and has gorgeous, spicy red currant fruit, good acidity and low alcohol. Navarre farms organically and ferments this rosé with wild yeasts - it has a lot of character and is an amazing value!

Misc. Italy

Hauner 2008 Salina Rosso

Dark currant, plum fruit, with herbal flavors – smells a little like olives soaked in Bitters. Palate is juicy with broad fruit and finishes dry with a bit of briny earth. Not overly tannic, and would be a treat with cured meats. JR
red | 78 in stock | Organic | $11.99

Masciarelli 2007 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

The perfect match for hearty Italian fare that sells for under ten bucks! The vintage shows its influence in increased rich dark cherry fruit, but at the same time is balanced with a refreshing acidity. Serious tannin and some earthy tobacco notes add a level of complexity that is not usually found in this price range. JR

Clos Des Boutes 2009 Costieres de Nimes Le Pluriel

red | 35 in stock | Organic | $10.99

Clos des Boutes 2009 Vin de Table Le Pluriel Rose

From the relatively unknown Costières de Nîmes appellation comes a delicious and well priced Carignan Rose. The Costières de Nîmes has oscillated from being part of the Languedoc to now part of the Rhone. Some say that Provence is truly the best fit. All territorial discussion aside this natural rose is surefire crowd-pleaser. JR

Fenouillet 2008 Cotes du Ventoux

A classic bistro wine from the impressive Fenouillet estate proves that the greater Rhone region is brimming with values. Made from a three-hectare site in the Cotes du Ventoux, this wine is fresh and fruity and drinks well when served a little cool. Slight tannin provides the structure to compliment the Grenache's ample strawberry fruit. JR

Monpertuis 2007 Vin de Pays du Gard La Ramière Counoise

Counoise, a grape used for blending in Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the star in this lovely Vin de Pays. The aromas are surprisingly deep and intiguing - ripe cherry and red currant with floral notes. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced with a clean if not super-long finish. This great value is very food friendly - serve a little bit cool... DL

Vieille Ferme 2008 Côtes du Luberon Blanc

A great value from the Perrin family of Chateau Beaucastel, Vieille Ferme Blanc is made from Rhone varietals, it's dry with herbal and citrus aromas and shows a lot of character for the very low price!
white | 58 in stock | $7.99

Vieille Ferme 2008 Côtes du Ventoux Rouge

This Rhone red is a great choice for a party - a blend of Grenache, Syrah and other Rhone grapes, it's soft and spicy but with enough acidity to complement your food. The screw cap makes things easy as does the price, at $6.29 per bottle on a case!
