Italy White

Pasquero, Bruno 2008 Roero Arneis

I think Pasquero's Arneis beats the famous competition - there's only one way to find out...
Perfect with your salumi/carpaccio/risotto/fish.

Pietrantonj, Italo 2008 Pecorino IGT

This is a rich Pecorino with seductive weight and body. It has a faintly sweet, nutty quality and the lengthy finish pops with nutmeg, bright rose hip and champagne-like tones. It is meadowy fresh with creaminess, balanced acidity and thought-provoking salinity. It comes from all estate fruit and the family has been making wine in Abruzzo for over 300 years. RSG

Radoar 2008 Etza Muller Thurgau Dolomiten

It might seem faint praise, but think this might be the best Muller-Thurgau we've ever tasted. Other good M-T offers pleasant, crisp, if innocuous drinking; this one has much more distinction. Yes, it's bright and crisp, with juicy acidity; it's a mountain wine (vines at 800 metres) and it's easy to imagine how well it would go with the rich local food. There are lovely pear and apple aromas, along with a subtle florality. There's a good mineral backbone, and a very fresh spring-water quality to the wine that makes it very attractive.
Radoar is a family farm; along with wine they produce organic apples, pears, chestnuts, pumpkins... It looks like a kind of Eden - the valley of the river Isarco is an incredibly beautiful place - and we want to visit...

Suore Cistercensi 2008 Vino da Tavola Bianco Coenobium

Gianpiero Bea makes this wine with some cloistered nuns - it's "pure, mostly".
It really is pure deliciousness - quite rich and dry with zingy acidity to keep it fresh. Perfect for most fish dishes or something rich like funghi...

Tedeschi, Alberto 2007 IGT Emilia Spungola Bellaria

The color is a lovely pale gold – technically this wine has a lot in common with ‘orange’ wines, but it doesn’t look like one and in many ways doesn’t show like one. Aromatically it’s intense and complex: apple, black tea, orange peel, hay, herbs – sage, rosemary - and leesy. The wine is dry, quite rich in the mouth but very crisp, fresh, and zesty, with the aromatics carrying through on the palate. There’s some tannin adding structure and interest, but no sense of over-extraction. On the second day the color had gone a bit orange – little or no sulphur, after all – but the aromatics and the palate were even deeper and longer. It was a fine if random match with risotto with new peas, grilled portobello mushrooms, and pecorino; it would work wonders with cheese in general… A very interesting and actually insanely good wine, and much less expensive than many of its vinous peers. Ulivi (Cascina degli Ulivi) 2008 Gavi

Finally, I say, a Gavi that I like and that's not over-oaked, and/or a stupid price (see Black Label, for example). For one thing this has some zip to it - good acidity that balances the grapes natural nutty richness if the yields are controlled as they are for this wine. There's some lime, green plum, walnut on the nose and palate; medium body and good length. An excellent addition to the Xmas eve fish menu. JW

Loire

Bain 2008 Pouilly Fume Mademoiselle M

Bain farms with organic methods, picks by hand and ferments with wild yeasts, which is not the case for most growers in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. He also uses minimal sulfur dioxide, seeking to make as natural a wine as possible. The results are lovely. This is a big and quite complex wine, with floral and white fruit aromas and a full-bodied palate marked by the limestone soils, a delicious, though not "typical" Pouilly-Fume!

Baudry 2009 Chinon Les Granges

Tasting the 2009 vintage at Domaine Baudry reminds me of the 1989's. Although the vintage 2009 isn't better than 89, in my opinion, the Baudry's have progressed in their vineyard work and winemaking and are now the top estate in Chinon. This first red of 2009 has deep red purple color and is is bursting with strawberry and red currant fruit. There is good acidity and the alcohol level is moderate at 12.3%, making this a refreshing and delicious wine for summer cook-outs, or all year long. Congratulations to the Baudrys, who are now in conversion for organic certification, for this yummy wine, really "super-bon!"

Baudry, Bernard 2007 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The grapes for this beautiful wine come from 35 year-old vines on both gravel and clay/limestone soils. As with all of their wines, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented slowly with wild yeasts. Bernard and Matthieu do fantastic work in the vineyard (though not yet certified, they work with organic methods)and age this wine in old wood, both large cuves and barrels. Lovely strawberry/raspberry aromas with lush fruit on the palate balanced by refreshing acidity and chalky minerality. It's drinking beautifully now but will soften and develop for another 5 to 8 years. This is a great vintage for the Domaine Cuvee - only 50 cases for the year so don't delay.

Baudry, Bernard et Mathieu 2008 Chinon Les Granges

The Baudry's Les Granges cuvee is from vineyards near the Vienne on sand and gravel soils. It's a fabulous Chinon to drink young with quite lush strawberry and raspberry fruit backed by crisp acidity. Hand harvested, wild yeast fermentation, in conversion to organic certification and yummy!

Belliviere 2007 Jasnieres Les Rosiers

A perfectly balanced and superbly elegant Chenin Blanc, this lovely wine from Eric and Christine Nicolas would be a great choice for Thanksgiving. The creamy lemon, herbal and apple fruit is balanced by good acidity and a very long finish. Outstanding organic vineyard work gives this wine the character to complement your holiday meal in a subtle and delicious way...

Belliviere 2009 Vin de Table Les Giroflees Rose

A magnificent rosé of Pinot D'Aunis from the hard-working Eric Nicolas. Yes, it's a little sweet, but don't let that deter you. The fruit is floral, ripe strawberries, cranberries and spice with a complex underlying minerality. DL

Bossard (Domaine de L'Ecu) 2007 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Expression d' Orthogneiss

A terrific effort from Guy Bossard, this Muscadet is aromatically complex and the palate is deep and long with mint and anise notes mixed with stony minerality. While it won't age as long as the Cuvee Granit, it should develop nicely over the next ten years or so... Decant if drinking young.

Bossard (Domaine de l'Ecu) 2009 Muscadet Sevre et Maine

Due to the tiny quantities of wine made by Guy Bossard in 2007, this will probably be the only wine to reach the US. Planted in 1986, the young vines of the lieu-dit "l'Ecu" gave an extremely dry and austere wine in 2007 - the "fruit" is predominantly wet stones and earth with hints of citrus and a palate of mineral acidity. A great match with oysters or ceviche... Bossard is one of the heroes of organic wine-making, having abandoned the chemical agriculture of his peers at an early age...

Bregeon, Michel 2002 Muscadet Sevre et Maine

In October of 2009 we tasted Bregeon's 2002 Muscadet Sur Lie, bottled in the spring of 2003. It showed certain similarities to Luneau-Papin's 2002 in that the density and mineral character on the palate were extraordinary. Bregeon kept a vat of the 2002 which he bottled in November of 2009 (similar to the six years on the lees of Luneau's 1976 and 1982). We're not sure if this will have the Gorgeois label, but after a bit of haggling with the importer, (whom we thank profusely for bringing this small special order), it will arrive later this month. After tasting Bregeon's 1989 and 1990, we can assure you that the 2002 will become a superb and complex mature wine. Perhaps a mixed case with Luneau's 2002 and Marc Ollivier's new 2005 "3" would be appropriate?

An exuberantly fruity Cabernet Franc from the Bretons, showing lush, ripe raspberry and strawberry fruit with refreshing acidity. This is the best Trinch ever and the new, lower price makes this a great value. "Trinch!" is the sound of clinking glasses and celebration -serve cool for maximum enjoyment!
