Loire

Bain 2008 Pouilly Fume Mademoiselle M

Bain farms with organic methods, picks by hand and ferments with wild yeasts, which is not the case for most growers in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. He also uses minimal sulfur dioxide, seeking to make as natural a wine as possible. The results are lovely. This is a big and quite complex wine, with floral and white fruit aromas and a full-bodied palate marked by the limestone soils, a delicious, though not "typical" Pouilly-Fume!

Baudry 2009 Chinon Les Granges

Tasting the 2009 vintage at Domaine Baudry reminds me of the 1989's. Although the vintage 2009 isn't better than 89, in my opinion, the Baudry's have progressed in their vineyard work and winemaking and are now the top estate in Chinon. This first red of 2009 has deep red purple color and is is bursting with strawberry and red currant fruit. There is good acidity and the alcohol level is moderate at 12.3%, making this a refreshing and delicious wine for summer cook-outs, or all year long. Congratulations to the Baudrys, who are now in conversion for organic certification, for this yummy wine, really "super-bon!"

Baudry, Bernard et Mathieu 2008 Chinon Les Granges

The Baudry's Les Granges cuvee is from vineyards near the Vienne on sand and gravel soils. It's a fabulous Chinon to drink young with quite lush strawberry and raspberry fruit backed by crisp acidity. Hand harvested, wild yeast fermentation, in conversion to organic certification and yummy!

Belliviere 2007 Jasnieres Les Rosiers

A perfectly balanced and superbly elegant Chenin Blanc, this lovely wine from Eric and Christine Nicolas would be a great choice for Thanksgiving. The creamy lemon, herbal and apple fruit is balanced by good acidity and a very long finish. Outstanding organic vineyard work gives this wine the character to complement your holiday meal in a subtle and delicious way...

Belliviere 2009 Vin de Table Les Giroflees Rose

A magnificent rosé of Pinot D'Aunis from the hard-working Eric Nicolas. Yes, it's a little sweet, but don't let that deter you. The fruit is floral, ripe strawberries, cranberries and spice with a complex underlying minerality. DL

Blanchet, Francis 2009 Pouilly Fumé Cuvee Silice

Once a year we get our allocation of Francis Blanchet Pouilly-Fumé. It's always terrific. One of the few left in the AOC who makes a subtle, racy, mineral- infused Sauvignon. Elegant, delicious and superbly food-friendly.

Bossard (Domaine de L'Ecu) 2007 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Expression d' Orthogneiss

A terrific effort from Guy Bossard, this Muscadet is aromatically complex and the palate is deep and long with mint and anise notes mixed with stony minerality. While it won't age as long as the Cuvee Granit, it should develop nicely over the next ten years or so... Decant if drinking young.

Bregeon, Michel 2002 Muscadet Sevre et Maine

In October of 2009 we tasted Bregeon's 2002 Muscadet Sur Lie, bottled in the spring of 2003. It showed certain similarities to Luneau-Papin's 2002 in that the density and mineral character on the palate were extraordinary. Bregeon kept a vat of the 2002 which he bottled in November of 2009 (similar to the six years on the lees of Luneau's 1976 and 1982). We're not sure if this will have the Gorgeois label, but after a bit of haggling with the importer, (whom we thank profusely for bringing this small special order), it will arrive later this month. After tasting Bregeon's 1989 and 1990, we can assure you that the 2002 will become a superb and complex mature wine. Perhaps a mixed case with Luneau's 2002 and Marc Ollivier's new 2005 "3" would be appropriate?

Bregeon, Michel 2008 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Li

A worthy successor to Bregeon's great 2007, the 2008 is again a dense and very mineral wine with hints of citrus and melon on the palate and finishing notes of anise and bitter stone. Bregeon's vineyards are on one of the most interesting terroirs in the Muscadet, which he expresses beautifully with his careful non-interventionist winemaking. Not a wine to quaff by the pool, it's a serious food wine at a great price.

Charmoise (Marionnet) 2009 Touraine Gamay

When I tasted this wine back in March, I was taken by the sheer deliciousness of this wine. It had that guzzle me Gamay quality that sometimes is missing in the Loire in lesser vintages with luscious bright fruit, great harmony and a good sense of focus. The great 2009 vintage has yielded us a real summertime treat. Serve cool and sit back. cb

Charmoise (Marionnet) 2009 Touraine Sauvignon

Henry Marionnet has long been a leader in the French natural wine movement, producing many bottlings without added sulphur and some interesting wines from ungrafted vines. His Touraine Sauvignon Blanc in 2007 has fresh melon, lemon and herbal flavors, crisp acidity and is a refreshing alternative to $25 Sancerres....

Chidaine, Francois 2007 Montlouis Sur Loire Les Bournais

This is one of the greatest estates in the Loire Valley. Francois Chidaine's work in the vineyard (beyond Biodynamic), combined with his great sites in Montlouis and Vouvray, produces brilliant wines of terroir that should be better known in the US. Les Bournais is perhaps his most interesting vineyard - a terroir more similar to certain plots in Vouvray which gives an aromatically fascinating wine. The 2007 is beautifully balanced, with good ripeness matched by firm acidity. It has lovely aromas of red fruits and citrus with an earthy, lemony and slightly honied palate. Superb and only available in the US at Chambers Street.

Clos Cristal 2008 Saumur-Champigny

Clos Roche Blanche 2009 Touraine Sauvignon Blanc #2

Mildew, hail and dry conditions during the summer severely limited the yields at Clos Roche Blanche in 2009, so very little of the Touraine Sauvignon was produced. (We have 25 cases for the vintage) It's quite full-bodied with ripe white fruit and herbal aromas, but with good acidity with pronounced mineral flavors on the palate. Catherine and Didier tend their vineyard like a giant garden and do valuable research on natural pest and disease control. A wonderful example of thoughtful natural winemaking and a great honor to have in the store...

Closel (Chateau des Vaults) NV (2005) Crémant de Loire Brut Sauvage

The new Crémant de Loire from Domaine du Closel is a fantastic value! A blend of 85% Chenin Blanc from Savennieres and 15% Cabernet Franc, it's bottled with no dosage and has intriguing apple, lemon and red fruit aromas and a full but dry and balanced palate. Bravo to Evelyn de Jessy for making this lovely wine and our thanks for the introductory low price!

Coulaine 2008 Chinon Clos du Turpenay

The Bonaventures of Chateau de Coulaine have been organic for many years and the quality of their wines is now among the very best in Chinon. The Clos Turpenay ia a great vineyard site with 45 year-old massale-selection vines on a south facing slope of limestone with clay and gravel, giving dense, earthy wines of great character. Chateau de Coulaine produced elegant, balanced wines in the difficult vintage of 2008. The Clos Turpenay has beautiful red and black fruit with hints of cocoa and good balancing acidity - while it's delicious now, it will cellar well for ten to fifteen years.
red | 47 in stock | Organic | $26.99

Coulaine 2008 Chinon La Diablesse

From low-yielding old vines near Les Picasses, this is the most age-worthy of Coulaine's wines. The fruit is quite dark and concentrated and the finish is very long with good acidity - this will be at it's best between 10 and 20 years of age.
red | 51 in stock | Organic | $34.99

Coulaine 2008 Chinon Les Picasses

This is one of the best sites in Chinon with classic clay/limestone soils. Chateau de Coulaine has about 2 hectares, 75% of the vines are about 15 years old, 25% are 80 years-old. The fruit is very pretty and complex and although quite concentrated it's bright, balanced and lovely to drink young. A super Les Picasses for drinking over the next ten years!

Crochet, Lucien 2009 Sancerre Pinot Rose

"This is a wine of breed with excellent balance, a beautiful pink color and a discrete strawberry fruitiness that shows the charm of fine Pinot Noir" says the importer. We're not sure about the "breed" part, but this is one of the most subtle and elegant roses available. We get only 15 cases so don't delay...
