Fay, Sandro 2008 Rosso di Valtellina

Made from Nebbiolo in the less heralded Lombardy appellation but this is by no means ofinferior quality. All cherry fruit on a lighter frame with delightful earth, mushroom and wet soil flavors and aromas. The fruit is remarkable for a wine of this pricepoint. A great value. This is my Tuesday night sipper into Wednesday and if need be into Thursday. LF
red | 28 in stock | $13.99

Ferrandes 2004 Passito di Pantelleria 375ml

Zibibbo is a sub-variety of Moscato, whose berries are considered too large to produce good wine. Because of this, the most typical use for Zibbo grapes is Passito di Pantelleria, for which the grapes are reduced in size by drying them on mats in the sun. The resulting product is one of the world's great sweet wines. Very rich in aromatic complexity and full and round on the palate with a long, satisfying raisined finish.
pink sweet | 43 in stock | Organic | $39.99

Foradori 2007 Teroldego Rotaliano

Rhone Syrah is not a bad beginning point for describing Teroldego - bright dark plum fruit, smoky, peppery, classic Italian amaro/bitter finish - this is good!
Foradori is the standard-bearer for quality Teroldego, and this is the classic example. The 2007 is ripe and rich while remaining graceful and elegant. 12.5 degrees alcohol - a miracle in itself. JW
red | 33 in stock | $22.99

Foti, Salvo 2006 Etna Rosso I Vigneri

red | 8 in stock | $32.99

Grifalco 2007 Aglianico del Vulture

A delicious wine from the volcanic soils of Mount Vulture. The ripe and rich plum and dark berry fruits are braced by a fresh acidity and smoky mineral aspect. Drink up with anything from pizza to grilled meats. JR
red | 28 in stock | $20.99

Guttarolo 2005 Gioia del Colle Primitivo Antello delle Murge

This cuvee from Cristiano Guttarolo spends two years in wood - it's a dense and elegant Prmitivo with deep red fruits and good length. Serve with a hearty stew...

Guttarolo 2006 Gioia del Colle Primitivo Antello delle Murge

red | 36 in stock | $24.99

Guttarolo 2007 Gioia del Colle Primitivo

From high on the Murge Plateau of Puglia, this is and organiclly farmed Primitivo with ripe cherry, herbal and chocolate aromas. A robust and full-flavored wine that will benefit from decanting.
red | 24 in stock | Natural | $25.99

Haas 1993 Merlot dell'Alto Adige cru Schweizer

red | 3 in stock | $34.99

Haas 1995 Alto Adige Moscato Rosso .375

NONE | 7 in stock | $24.99

Hauner 2008 Salina Rosso

Dark currant, plum fruit, with herbal flavors – smells a little like olives soaked in Bitters. Palate is juicy with broad fruit and finishes dry with a bit of briny earth. Not overly tannic, and would be a treat with cured meats. JR
red | 78 in stock | Organic | $11.99

Le Fraghe 2009 Bardolino Chiaretto Rose "Rodon"

Chiaretto refers to the light red color of this rose from the hills outside of Verona. Le Fraghe uses a blend of the Corvina and Rondinella varieties fermented separately and rested in stainless steel tanks. Dry and perfumed with strawberry pie and floral notes, this wine begs for cured meats in the sun. JR
pink | 2 in stock | $13.99

Masciarelli 2007 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

The perfect match for hearty Italian fare that sells for under ten bucks! The vintage shows its influence in increased rich dark cherry fruit, but at the same time is balanced with a refreshing acidity. Serious tannin and some earthy tobacco notes add a level of complexity that is not usually found in this price range. JR

Monte Dall' Ora 2008 Valpolicella Classico

In the past few years we've tasted a lot of examples of Valpolicella - the basic red wine of the region - and they are all over the place, ranging in style from very austere to lush, factory-induced fruit-gobs. It becomes hard to know what the standard is. It does seem that this type of wine should be fresh, medium-bodied, and it should carry hints of the aromatic and palate richness that the same grapes give to the noble Amarone.
This version delivers. It's a natural wine - biodynamic farming, indigenous yeasts, minimal sulphur, etc. Aged in botte - huge wood barrels, not filtered, this has great purity, and that hard-sought-after typicity. A very fine wine. JW

Montoni 2005 IGT Sicilia Nero d'Avola Vrucara

red | 57 in stock | $35.99

Nusserhof (Heinrich Mayr) 2006 Sudtiroler Lagrein Riserva

A northern Italian savory and spicy red wine made from the native Lagrein grape. A slightly tannic red, which pairs well with red meat, stews, and braises, as well as hard Italian style and mild blue cheeses. NCB
red | 8 in stock | Organic | $29.99

Nusserhof (Heinrich Mayr) 2006 Vino da Tavola Tyroldego

We've always loved Elisabetta Foradori's elegant version of Teroldego Rotaliano, but now Heinrich Mayr's crazy Tyroldego has captured our affections. Teroldego/Tyroldego is a grape that has a lot in common with Syrah (or at least with Syrah as found in Cornas or Crozes-Hermitage): dark, black cherry fruit with an entrancing bitter/amaro finish, lots of smoky and gamey aromas, stony minerality, high acid balanced by richness so you get an intensely flavored wine that's not heavy. Mayr's version is much edgier and more exciting than Foradori - a true mountain wine.
red | 13 in stock | Organic | $31.99

Nusserhof (Heinrich Mayr) 2007 Vino do Tavola Elda (Schiava)

red | 5 in stock | $24.99

Occhipinti 2007 IGT Sicilia Il Frappato

It's back, for a limited time only, one of our favorite Italian reds, the lush and fruity but light-on-it's-feet Frappato from the lively Arianna Occhipinti!
red | 12 in stock | Natural | $33.99

Occhipinti 2007 IGT Sicilia Siccagno Nero D'Avola

Nero d'Avola is the primary red grape of Sicily, and while capable of making very fine wine, most examples are very ordinary. This is one of the greats - an expression of the grape at it's most elegant and refined - none of the standard clunky fruit and overextraction, but bright dark cherry, herbs, chalk, all singing together. JW
red | 10 in stock | Natural | $33.99

Occhipinti 2008 IGT Sicilia SP 68

Occhipinti makes insanely pure and focused wines. This blend is light-medium-bodied, with lovely crisp black cherry fruit, stony earth, a little bit of garrigue-type herbs, great concentration without fat, and a haunting long finish.
We might think – with some justification – of Sicily as a hot climate that makes big dusty flabby wine of no particular distinction, but this wine begins to distill the contradictions of this complex place, balancing hot and cold, sweet and sour, intensity and grace. A great choice for Thanksgiving, this lovely wine will complement the meal and please your crowd. Serve cool!… JW

Pepe, Emidio 1978 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Holy hell this is beautiful wine; exhibiting gorgeous notes of black truffle, sun-dried tomatoes, dried herbs, and soil, all strung together along a core of morello cherry. The palate is broad and alive with lingering tobacco notes in the finish. Exceptional. CB
At least as good as the sought-after 1975, maybe better. JW

Perillo 2003 Taurasi

Perrini 2008/2009 Salento IGT Negroamaro

"Red wine of Negroamaro grapes picked by hand elegant intense expressing a wide fruity of forest and cherry bouquet aged in underground cellars" is what the back-label says. Their English could use some work but the wine is lovely and a great value. Certified organic.
