Since a tasting many years ago at the natural wine fair "La Dive Bouteille," we have loved the Pouilly-Fuissés of Château des Rontets. Created in the 1700s, the estate has been in the Varambon family since the mid 1800s. In 1995 Claire Gazeau, François Varambon's great-grand-daughter, moved to Fuissé to take care of it with her husband Fabio Montrasi. Please join us this afternoon, Saturday April 7th, from 4 till 7pm, to taste these five beautiful wines with vigneron Fabio Montrasi. And next Monday, April 9th, join Fabio as he presides at the bar at Racines NY, 94 Chambers Street, beginning at 5:30!  (Please note: The 2015 Varambon and 2014 Birbettes are in stock. The 2015 Pierrefolle, 2016 Varambon and 2016 Saint-Amour arrive April 30.)

Certified organic since 2005, the estate's 7.5 hectares include superb terroir on both limestone and granite soils, planted at high densities, and almost all by massale selection. The wines possess fabulous elegance and minerality that make them unique in the region, due to the estate's superb farming, precise natural vinifications and long aging sur-lie. The alcoholic fermentations are made only with natural yeasts, without any addition of sugar or acid and without enzymes, and the malolactic fermentations are never inhibited or artificially stopped. This practice can lead to long fermentations, often lasting several months, in which different stocks of yeast succeed one another and develop a series of specific aromas. This choice contributes to increase the aromatic complexity of the wines and favors the particular expression of the terroir.

The main vineyard site is "Les Rontets," situated at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, on the top of the hill which closes the valley of Fuissé towards the south. This parcel produces the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvées Clos Varambon and Les Birbettes. The bedrock is composed of hard limestone from the Jurassic period and is from 1.30 to 1.60 meters deep. The tillable soil layer at its surface is very thin (20 centimeters at its deepest) and is composed of silt and silty clay, with very high presence of stones and silica.

The Pierrefolle climat, producing the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvée of the same name, is set at the top of the lieu-dit Vers Chânes. Although only 500 meters south of Rontets and practically at the same altitude, this plot has completely different characteristics. It is already on the south side of the geological fault separating the sedimentary soils from those issued from the continental base. Therefore in Pierrefolle the bedrock is granitic, the soil is much deeper and composed only of quite thick silts, often giving a fuller wine but with a distinctive bright acidity.

The estate also produces an unusual and delicious Saint-Amour from the Côte de Besset, one of the twelve climats of Saint-Amour. The two plots, reaching a total surface of half a hectare, are high up on a hill and exposed plain East. They consist of a primary volcanic-sedimentary sub-soil, quite rich with silica, and have a sandy-silty soil with a strong slope and high percentage of stones. This terroir produces a light bodied but remarkably elegant wine that is one of our favorite Beaujolais.

Rontets 2014 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Birbettes

From vines dating from the 1920s and 1940s. Organically farmed, and vinified in used oak barrels. The 2014 is a beautiful expression of Pouilly-Fuissé fusing the bright minerality of the old vines with the sunny richness of the appellation. The robe is a green gold hue. The nose is redolent of stone fruit and citrus peel. The palate is racy on the attack, with a pungent stony character giving way to a supple ripeness building on a long, lingering finish. This is lovely and a great candidate for cellaring in the mid-term, say 8-10 years, though one could certainly tuck into a bottle earlier. John McIlwain

Rontets 2015 Pouilly-Fuissé Pierrefolle

"The Pouilly-Fuissé cuvée Pierrefolle is made from the only vineyard situated outside the Clos at Rontets: this plot is set only 500 meters south and is warmer because of its plain East exposure and the sheltered position from the North wind. This climat has older geological origins, preceding the Jurassic era: it sits on a granitic bedrock and its soil has no clay or limestone. This is why at the beginning of the 1970s it was planted using the Riparia rootstock, which has low vigor and guarantees limited yields and very good quality grapes. All these characteristics produce wines with lower acid, compared to those produced within our Clos. Although larger and somehow more generous, Pierrefolle is always sustained by a precise mineral expression and citrus aromatic note." In the warm 2015 vintage, the Pierrefolle shows ripe aomas of white and exotic fruits with a bit of spice and earth. The palate, however, remains very mineral with firm saline acidity underlying the pear and citrus fruit. The finish is long with mineral flavors lingering on the palate. This is a beautiful Burgundy and a great food pairing - drinking well now, but five to ten years of aging will be very interesting. Highly recommended. David Lillie

Rontets 2016 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos Varambon

This beautiful Pouily-Fuissé is from old vines in the Clos on hard limestone with very thin silty clay topsoil. Certified organic farming, long slow fermentations with wild yeasts and aging in large oak barrels, none new.  The wine shows bright aromas of pear, lemon confit, herbs and stone. The palate shows creamy white fruits and citrus flavors with firm very chalky acidity and a hint of oak. The wine is beautifully balanced and refreshing, drinking wonderfully now,  but it will improve with 5 to 8 years of aging. This is a lovely White Burgundy, comparing favorable at the price with wines from the Cote d'Or.

Rontets 2016 Saint-Amour Cote de Besset

We were lucky enough to taste this at La Dive Bouteille last winter - the wine showed beautiful floral raspberry aromas with a refreshing light and lovely palate showing subtle raspberry and cherry fruit. Very long and elegant with a sapid, refreshing finish. A little bit of Volnay in Saint-Amour!

Rontets 2015 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos Varambon

The 2015 Cos Varambon is a beautiful Pouilly-Fuissé to drink over the next five to eight years. The aromas show lovely pear, peach, honeyed lime-flower and citrus. The palate is round and ripe with dense pear and citrus fruit, very calcaire and supported by firm acidity despite the ripeness of the vintage.  Serve with fish in sauce, white meats and mild cheeses or sip happily by itself, delicious wine!
