Horiot, Olivier NV (Base 2013) Champagne Métisse Noir et Blancs Extra Brut

Though famed for their reds and the eponymous rosé, Riceys produces far more Champagne than still wines from its vineyards bordering Burgundy. And though the Kimmeridgian soils mean Pinot Noir in the Aube, they also make a convincing case for the underappreciated Pinot Blanc grape. Sourced from all eight of his terroirs, Olivier Horiot's Métisse, a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Blanc, is based on the 2013 vintage with the balance made up of reserve wine from a perpetual cuvée stored in foudre. The nose is delicate and spritely upon opening with generous notes of white peach, lemon curd, and cool herb tones, opening to reveal aromas of brioche and ginger. On the palate, there is a sense of volume with generous stone fruit flavors underlain with a broad, stony character which lends drive to the long, lingering finish. This would be lovely with pan-roasted scallops, though there's certainly enough texture to accompany risotto with wild mushrooms, or roasted chicken.  (Disgorged 3/15/2016, Dosage 2g/L) John McIlwain

Melsheimer 2015 Mosel Riesling Pet-Nat 'Rurale'

Thorsten Melsheimer has been farming organically in the Mosel since 1995 (certified ECOVIN) and became Demeter (biodynamic) certified in 2013. Sparkling wine accounts for 20 percent of Thorsten's production; he's been making serious, elegant Sekt since the early eighties. We are very excited to offer his Pet-Nat 'Rurale': made from biodynamically-grown Riesling and Johanniter, with no added sulfur. The wine has a lively, creamy mousse with notes of golden and green apple, ginger, orange zest, peach skin and yellow apricot with a lengthy finish. Pair with a fried oyster po' boy or crab cake sandwich with fries. Cari Bernard

Loxarel 2012 Penedès Garnatxa Blanca Brut Nature Reserva

A pleasure and a rarity from sparkling wine master Loxarel: 100% Garnatxa Blanca from organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards at 700m altitude in the Alt Penedes. Loxarel's commitment to revealing and heightening the expressions of local varieties is on full display in this zesty, refined, vintage-dated sparkler, with 15 months on the lees, green apple and stone fruit aromas and a complex, Mediterranean palate of tangy lemon, spicy apricots, resinous green herbs, almond blossom and lavender, with a hint of sweet smoke, olive oil, and brine on the finish. A fine bead makes for a perfect paring anywhere you would reach for a still white wine; we recently found this delightful at lunch with egg tortilla and dark leafy greens, also a refreshing foil to fish and chips or simple seared scallops.Ariana Rolich

Fukucho NV Sake Junmai Ginjo Forgotten Fortune

Fukucho is made at Imada Shuzo, in the town of Akitsu in Hiroshima Prefecture, on the shores of Japan's Inland Sea, a body of water separating the islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Notably, Imada Shuzo is run by a woman, Miho Imada, who holds the title of both Brewery President and Toji Master, positions she inherited after over a decade of training in the family business. In the years since, she's put her own mark on the brewery, most notably with the Forgotten Fortune bottling. Imada-san revived an heirloom variety of Hiroshima rice called Hattanso, previously only conserved in seed banks, and replanted it for the first time in over a century. After years of trial and error, she's dialed in the exact brewing specifications and crafts this wonderfully clean, vibrant sake with a undercurrent of salinity and umami. The nose is delicate with notes of melon, cucumber peel and steamed rice, and the palate shows great acidity and crisp dry finish.  Hiroshima is famous for its oysters, and this sake is a perfect pairing. Delicious with all types of shellfish and seafood, this sake also pairs wonderfully with salads and other light vegetarian fare. Oskar Kostecki

Donneurs du Temps 2015 Arbois Chardonnay

From young Jura newcomer Guillaume Gilet, this is Chardonnay from organic vineyards that overlook the town of Arbois. Very fresh, with notes of lemon curd, cantelope, apples and herbs. Guillaume uses no SO2 during winemaking (sometimes bottling with none added) and tries to preserve some natural CO2 gas to protect his wines in the absence of SO2. This blows off within a few minutes, so decanters are not necessary. There's a driving mineral spice that shines through the finish, and an overall very clean and pure natural wine.    Eben Lillie

Gaudry, Vincent 2015 Sancerre Melodie Vieilles Vignes

Domaine Vincent Gaudry, located in Sury-en-Vaux, has been organic and Biodynamic certified beginning in 1993. The 2015 "Melodie des Vieilles Vignes" is from 50-plus year-old vines on clay/limestone soils, and is fermented naturally with wild yeasts. This is an outstanding Sancerre showing elegant aromas of ripe pear, quince, citrus and lime-flower, really quite lovely. The palate is fresh and lively with dried pear, stone and herbal flavors, very elegant and happily unlike most modern Sancerres. The stone and subtle fruit flavors continue in the refreshing finish, making this a superb food wine with anything from oysters to grilled fish and fish and chicken in sauce. And Crottin de Chavignol, of course. Highly recommended and a good value! David Lillie

Luneau-Papin 2015 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Vera Cruz

Vera Cruz is a new cuvée from Luneau-Papin, from 40 year-old vines on a terroir of schistes and gneiss "a deux micas" in Vallet, farmed with organic and biodynamic methods. A wine of terroir rather than fruit, even in the ripe 2015 vintage, the wine shows elegant aromas of pear, grilled almond, stone and citrus. The palate is dense and very mineral, showing more flavor of earth than fruit, with a lovely finish of stone, minerals and white fruit that coats the palate. Perfect now with fine oysters, grilled dorade, sole, cod and scallops with lemon. Or cellar - this wine should be very interesting in 5 to 15 years. Label inspired by Mondrian and the varied terroirs of Muscadet. DL

Folk Machine 2017 Central Coast Jeanne d'Arc

This 100% chenin blanc is sourced from Merritt Island in the Sacramento river delta, near Clarksburg. Natural fermentation occurred after six days on the skin, and continued for a month. Broad and inviting on the nose, this wine has fine citrus character that mixes with a broader, more textured elegance on the palate. Lemon curd and a delicate peach character intermix over light tannin from the extended skin contact, though it is softer and prettier than many more deeply hued orange wines. This wine will pair excellently with heavier seafood, like braised scallops, lobster, or monkfish, particularly if a cream sauce is involved. Light sulfur only at bottling. Andrew Farquhar

Idlewild 2016 Mendocino Fox Hill Arneis

This beautifully rendered 100% Arneis from the Fox Hill vineyard in Mendocino is a classic. From two separate cooler parcels within the vineyard, the Arneis is planted on a well-drained mix of gravel and sand. Whole cluster pressing and natural yeast fermentation in stainless steel are followed by four months in neutral oak resting on the lees, which adds a layer of texture to the racy acidity. Restrained and finely etched, this wine has the structural elegance and clean lines of a woodblock print. Dried sap, beech bark, and mountain flowers intermingle with citrus and stone fruit character. Fine structure, great acidity, and a refined and delicate integration make this a fantastic match for seafood. Pair with flounder, shellfish, or smoked eel.

Harm 2016 Wachau Grüner Veltliner FIO

Maria and Andreas Harm have around ten hectares spread between Kremstal and Wachau, with their 500-year-old cellar located on the Kremstal side. 'FIO' stands for four-in-one: Grüner Veltliner from vines aging 10-30 years, from four different vineyards. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel, with lees contact until bottling. White blossoms mixed with green herbal scents, the wine boasts a rich texture balanced by saline notes, green pear, white strawberries, and tart green apple. A sprightly Grüner to pair with crisp snap pea salads, steamed artichokes, fresh soft cheeses, striped bass with lemon and herbs in cartoccio. Cari Bernard

Wenzel, Michael 2016 Neusiedlersee-Hügelland Furmint 'Vogelsang'

Vogelsang is one of two single-vineyard parcels that Michael bottles separately. The vineyard is further south along the Ruster hill-chain, here mica schist and gneiss soils are punctuated with grey quartz, which Michael says gives the wine a cooler and tighter minerality. When tasted against the Garden of Eden vineyard (pink quartz), one can't help but concur. As Furmint is a late-ripening grape, bunches in the Vogelsang and Eden vineyards will often stay on the vine until late September, more than three weeks after the other grape varieties are harvested. For the Vogelsang, there is a touch of skin-contact before pressing (less than the Eden), and the wine ages in 500L used French oak barrels. An incredible balance of luxurious density and cool minerality, evoking comparisons with age-worthy Loire Chenin Blanc, concentrated Pouilly-Fuissé, and even characteristics of heady Jura whites. Like Chenin, Furmint lends itself well to a wide variety of wine styles, from dry and linear to the most elegant of dessert wines (Ausbruch). Vogelsang is dry with a concentration of fruity and aromatic quince, yellow apple skin, tangerine oil, white blossom, and honeyed young ginger, with a stony minerality keeping things from getting too lush. Enjoy now paired with seared scallops over creamy polenta, roasted chicken with fennel, potatoes au gratin, or put down for at least 5-8 years. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2016 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Unterstenberg

Covered in eroded gray slate, Unterstenberg is the site on the Ayler Kupp that has some of the most water retention due to its location at the foot of the hillside. Notes of peach, orange zest, apple compote, and red grapefruit on the nose open up to a rich and fruit-forward palate boasting ripe apricot, yellow apple skin, and pineapple. Spicy and bold! Pair with grilled Thai curry squid, crab cakes over a citrus salad. Cari Bernard

Orto di Venezia 2014 Sant'Erasmo Bianco

The 2014 Sant’Erasmo Bianco is a striking wine grown on the island of San Erasmo within the lagoon of Venice.  Premised on Malvasia Istriana but comprised of a number of other local cultivars all planted on its own root stock, the wine is deeply colored in the glass, with a nose reminiscent of ripe golden apples and honeysuckle undercut by a salty tone. The palate is bold, with an initial attack of juicy orchard fruit and rich texture, followed by a honeyed note giving way to a long savory finish. More than anything else, the Orto shows a stern backbone of minerality bracing its mellow acidity and weight on the palate.  I served it with shrimp cooked with their own stock and butter, but this wine would pair beautifully with anything out of the sea, soft cheese, or rich vegetable dishes. Open early and serve slightly chilled.  Andy Paynter

Ronchi di Cialla 2016 Colli Orientali del Friuli Ribolla Gialla

Ronchi di Cialla is most famous for their role in reviving the grape Schioppettino, and rightfully so, but the Ribolla Gialla will always be my favorite. It is a distinctive expression of Ribolla from 30-year-old vines exposed to the south west that shows a delicate fruit character and crunchy minerality. The wine is vinified in stainless steel, held in contact with the lees for three months with frequent batonnage, and then bottled unfiltered. Quite pale in the glass, the nose shows a mix of lemon pith and clementines over ripe golden apples, white flowers with a woodsy note of sage and underbrush. Medium bodied with crisp acidity, it has a light texture with juicy citrus fruit and has a sharply mineral finish. A lovely wine it would pair beautifully with pan seared scallops, fried flounder, or skate dressed with herbs and served with fresh spring peas. Andy Paynter

Corisca 2015 Rías Baixas Albariño Ecologico

We are very proud to work with Corisca ("storm" in the local dialect), a certified organic Albariño made by Natalia Rodríguez and her father José María, pioneers in the region (the first in Rías Baixas to be certified organic) who work tirelessly to perfect the balance of this wine - the only one that they make. Corisca displays pure Albariño character and heightened refreshment at an everyday price. Salty, stony aromas with hints of orange oil and green herbs precede the elegant palate, full of twinkling citrus and stone fruit, bright sea spray, minerals, and a long, complex finish. An invigorating apéritif and easy pairing for poultry, fish, and vegetables. We cannot imagine a more delicious "house" Albariño! Ariana Rolich.

Want a great wine with your fish? Corisca is one of the best wines you can buy to pair with! With great salinity, pretty texture and good acidity, the wine works beautifully with white flesh fish, such as mahi mahi, striped bass or skate, and many seafoods, from crab to scallop. Try it with ceviche and sushi and you will thank me!  Caroline Coursant

Gonzalez Byass NV Jerez Fino Tio Pepe En Rama (btld 2017)

This is the 2017 release of what is perennially one of my favorite sherries, Gonzales Byass's Tio Pepe En Rama. "En Rama" translates to "from the cask", and this is one of the purest expressions of fino sherry, bottled without fining or filtration in the springtime, when the influence of flor (the veil of yeast that protects the wine from oxidization and imparts a very particular flavor) is at its strongest. The 2017 displays beautiful aromas of green apple, lemon peel, white blossom, almonds, that yeasty flor character, a touch of smoke and a briney, olive note. The palate is vibrant and lovely, marrying all the complexity of the nose with a great minerality and salinity. Such a complex and food-friendly wine! One of my favorite pairings with fino sherry is grilled fish, but this would also be lovely with seared scallops, calamari, or monkfish liver. Oskar Kostecki

Gogita Makaridze 2016 Georgia Imereti Terjola Tsitska

Gogita's Tsitska is made in a village called Terjola in western Georgia. The 2016 is a traditional qvevri wine made with minimal skin-contact - a style that produces lighter wines with paler hues common in western Georgia. The bright aromas of lemon, salty melon and pear offer a cheerful, warm weather vibe. Supple flavors of peach skins and orchard fruits are braced by lemon zest and  delicate saline minerals on the finish. Try this at your next fish fry with trout and garnish with citrus and pomegranate sauce for a Georgian-inspired supra! Amanda Bowman

Lectores Vini 2016 Conca de Barberá Pomagrana Trepat

Pomagrana is 100% Trepat from our friend Fredi Torres (known to our customers through his eponymous Priorat and Montsant wines, as well as Silice Viticultores in Ribeira Sacra). Fredi is known for finessing elegant wines out of big, bodacious varieties like Carignan and Grenache, and Trepat is used to make ethereal, pale and herbal reds and rosés, so we knew his Trepat project in the Conca de Barberà (southern Catalonia, Spain) would be a hit. Pert and mineral, with a refreshing 11% alcohol and tart raspberry, cranberry, and (you guessed it!) pomegranate fruit. Best served with a chill alongside snacks, cheese, charcuterie and friends! AR

Many customers have been asking for a red wine to pair with fish and Pomagrana is the perfect red wine for that! Think of Thai- or Vietnamese-inspired meals with seafood or fish, sushi, blackened salmon, or seared tuna. Light and bright with great energy and nice acidity, the wine will enhance your meal without overwhelming it. A fantastic option for people who don't want to drink a white wine with their fish! Courtault-Tardieux 2016 Touraine Chenonceaux

Chenonceaux is a charming little commune that overlooks the river Cher, a tributary of the Loire River. It’s considered by many to be the best spot in the Touraine appellation for Sauvignon Blanc, and we may have to concur. Simon Tardieux has a long history in the Loire, going back to his teenage days working with Catherine Roussel and Didier Barouillet at Clos Roche Blance. His neighbor, Alain Courtault, farms his vineyards organically, and has joined Simon to create their small estate nestled in the Loire et Cher. There is a beautiful density to this wine, and no notes of grapefruit or lychee that are often found in the Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre, to the east. Organic/biodynamic farming and careful hand harvesting, aging with old wood, no new oak. Highly recommended!  Eben Lillie

P.S. This is perfect wine to try on people who say they don't like Sauvignon Blanc!

Laguerre 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Blanc

I recently made monkfish from Blue Moon, simply braised in the oven with a bit of white wine, olive oil, chopped fennel and herbs of Provence - it was perfect with the complex mineral/herbal flavors of this beautiful wine! Eric Laguerre's "Le Ciste," (named after a flowering bush in and around his vineyards) is certainly one of the most distinctive whites of the Roussillon. Grown in Eric's high-elevation vineyards on acidic soils of decomposed granite, the wine is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Yields are about 20 Hl/Ha, harvesting is by hand in small baskets, fermentation (wild yeasts) and aging is in small barrels. Complex aromas of lemon oil, thyme, hay and white fruits—a lovely melange with contributions from each variety and especially showing the Marsanne and Roussanne in 2015. The palate is dense, stony and saline with herbal, citrus, almond and white fruit flavors. The finish is long with mineral acids and white fruits that linger on the palate. Complex and distinctive as a young wine, this will accompany grilled fish as well as fish and chicken in sauce and goat cheeses, and should develop nicely with a few years of cellaring. Really a Grand Cru of the Roussillon and a great value! DL
