Summer Close-Out Sale: Our Basement is a Mess! Bargains, Bin-Ends and Forgotten Treasures...

Share

One of the great things about having a wine shop in Manhattan is the huge number of wonderful, knowledgeable customers who live nearby. The worst thing about having a shop in Manhattan is the constant struggle for storage space, both on-site and off. After looking at the vast quantities of  wine that will be arrivng at Chambers Street in June, we have decided to take action and make some space! To clear out some space in our main storage area we're offering some of our favorite high-value wines at even lower prices for a limited time (Including some nice Burgundy!) - these are delicious everyday wines that offer great value at the regular prices and are sensational bargains at the sale price. We also need to create space in our store and basement racking areas that hold the last inventory of some of our most interesting wines - we just don't have enough room and must clear some of these out. You'll find some unique and delicious left-overs from Spain, Italy, Germany and the US. An added bonus is a very interesting group of wines that we were  holding for future sale (or future consumption at our post-holiday party?) We don't have room to hold them so out they go! Please note: Prices on the first group of inexpensive wines are good through this Saturday only and will be noted as such. Prices on the bin-ends and forgotten treasures will remain in place until sold out. Happy hunting!

Petite Baigneuse (Philippe Wies) 2013 Maury Sec Grand Largue

Lledoner Pelut is a relatively unknown variety, related to Grenache (and known as Garnacha Peluda in Spain). Philippe Wies farms Lledoner Pelut and Grenache Noir in the Catalan hills of France, in a special part of the Languedoc-Roussillon region with soils of decomposed black schist. Philippe finds 2013 to be much like 2017, which was a warm year that didn't require long aging. The wine was ready after 8 months in large Alsatian barrels (Philippe is originally from Alsace) and was then moved to fiberglass tank for one month before bottling. Thanks to a very gentle vertical press (that Philippe built by hand), there is very little extraction here. It's 13.5%, with lovely finesse and a touch of funk. No SO2 added. (On Sale through June 9th Was $18.99) EL

Roche Bleue 2016 Coteaux du Loir L'Orée de la Berterie

This is an extremely dry and bright Chenin Blanc from Sébastien Cornille at Domaine de la Roche Bleue, from 30 year-old vines on slopes and terraces of clay and silex over limestone in the Coteaux du Loir, certified organic farming with biodynamic methods.  The wine shows subtle, high-toned aromas of citrus, stone, pear, almond and fines herbes. The palate is lean and bright with dried pear, citrus and mineral notes with very firm acidity. This is a vibrant, high-acid Chenin, that is opening up nicely now. Serve with oysters, grilled fish and goat cheeses or cellar for ten to fifteen years.  David Lillie

Thill, Eric et Berengere 2015 Côtes du Jura Savagnin "Romane"

This is a beautiful ouillé (topped up i.e. NOT oxidative) Savagnin from young winemaker Eric Thill in the Jura. Eric is originally from Alsace and finds Savagnin reminds him of Sylvaner a bit. I see the resemblance, as his Savagnin has nice stone fruit aromas, and impressive density on the palate. A real treat and a unique expression of the variety. (On Sale through June 9th, Was $23.99)

Zelige-Caravent 2016 VdF Pour Toi Ma Belle (Cinsault - Blanc de Noirs)

A few years back, Luc and Marie at Zelige-Caravent decided to make a blanc de noirs from a healthy harvest of Cinsault grapes. They were happy with the wine and have continued to make it each year. There is no color here, save a subtle opacity to the wine. Lovely floral and spicy nose, full bodied for a white, and unlike anything else on the shelf! ... Side note: Marie hand paints every label with this wine, so each bottle is different! (On Sale, was $19.99)

Daniel Ramos Zerberos 2013 Castilla y León Dair

Dair is a 100% Garnacha planted on schist soils in La Chapelle en La Joya de la Movida in the Gredos mountains. Whole-clustered, the grapes are fermented with native yeast, and then aged in old oak for a year with no filtering or fining, and with minimal addition of sulfur. This is a rustic but vibrant Garnacha wine with red berry and cherry fruit, earthy spice, dried herbs and tobacco, and dark rose floral and wooden notes lifted by bright acidity, superb minerality and good tannins. A wine with a lot of character, drink it with a plate of jamón and dried manchego, roasted pork tenderloin, and beef brisket. As a cute note, Dair is the combination of the first two letters of each of Daniel Ramos' children first names (Daniel and Irene). They participated in some parts of the winemaking and drew the labels! Caroline Coursant

Domaine des Amphores 2015 IGP des Collines Rhodanniennes Viognier 'Les Iris'

"Les Iris" is made from organically tended Viognier vines just south of the Condrieu AOC. The 2015 is elegant and balanced with a powerful minerality. Pale lemon in the glass,  the nose offers opulent aromas of peaches, nutmeg, and cut lime flowers. Creamy flavors of peach, touches of brown spice, and lemon zest develop into more tropical notes of mango, tangerine, and stone on the long finish. Forget what you think you know about Viognier and pair this one with chicken, fish or mild cheeses this summer. Amanda Bowman

Barou 2016 Vin de Pays Syrah Cuvee des Vernes

(On Sale through 6/9 Was $12.99) This delicious Syrah is from 30 to 40 year-old vines in the "Les Vernes" vineyard near Charnas (Saint-Joseph). The grapes are 80% de-stemmed and undergo a two-day cold maceration followed by an 18-day fermentation. The wine ages for 9 months in 4 and 5 year-old barrels. The wine shows a deep red/black color and aromas of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant with hints of mint, violet, spice and meat. There is lovely ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit on the palate with nice focus and depth, framed in firm acidity and finishing with good length and mineral flavors. Thanks to Emmanuel and Marie-Agnès Barou for this lovely wine which is one of the best values in the store!  David Lillie

Barou 2016 Saint-Joseph "Un Autre Monde"

(On Sale through June 9th, was $18.99 - this is an amazing deal!) Domaine Barou has been organic since the 1970s and also produces cherries, apricots and peaches. The Saint-Joseph vines are in Limony, on thin granite soils. Shallow plowing ("griffage") is done in the summer, with rye and clover growing between the rows in winter. The grapes are 80% de-stemmed, fermentations are with wild yeasts, aging is primarily in old barrels. the 2016 Saint-Joseph shows lovely aromas of blackberry and blueberry, quite floral, with hints of citrus, herbs and spice, a bit brighter than the 2015. The palate shows earthy black fruits with citrus and mineral notes, quite balanced with firm acidity at 13% alcohol and finishing with nice crisp acidity. This will pair well with roast chicken and pork dishes and will improve for three to five years in the bottle. DL

Billard 2015 Bourgogne Cuvée Milliane VV

(On Sale through June 9th Was $21.99) Domaine Gabriel Billard is now directed by Claudie Jobard. The four hectares of parcels in and around Beaune and Pommard have a very high percentage of old vines. While not organic, only natural composts are used, with minimal treatments in the vines and regular light tilling ("griffage") and wild-yeast fermentations. The 2015 Cuvee Milliane "Vieilles Vignes" is from vines near Pommard and shows complex aromas of ripe black cherry and strawberry, with violets, orange peel, earth and smoke. There are dense red fruits on the palate, quite sappy, also very earthy and mineral, and quite balanced for a 2015 at 13% alcohol. The finish is long and well-structured - the wine will obviously benefit from 3 to 5 years of aging, but it's quite delicious now in it's intense youth. This is a "serious" Bourgogne rouge at a great price!

Couronneau 2015 Bordeaux Superieur

(On Sale through June 9th Was $17.99) This 100% Merlot wine from Château Couronneau, an estate certified organically and biodynamically since 2009 and 2011 respectively, is a fun full-bodied Bordeaux. With a bouquet of ripe plums, blackberries, dark cherries, violet, and vanilla cream notes, the wine reminds me of summer times in the South of France when I was a child. On the palate, the wine has a beautiful density with good acidity and firm tannin. A great value, this wine will be the perfect companion to any barbecued meat or a classic steak and frites. Clairette de Bellegarde is a tiny appellation in the Languedoc, close to the city of Nimes. As the name may imply, the sole grape grown here is Clairette. Clos Des Boutes 2015 IGP Gard Les Fagnes (Carignan Blanc)

All Carignan Blanc from Sylvain Boutée. I am a fan of Carignan Blanc, for the fresh, crisp character it has on opening, and the fullness it develops after breathing for a while. It may be silly to suggest decanting a wine as inexpensive as this, but I've always been impressed with this wine after about an hour open, so it can't hurt!  Eben Lillie

Jane et Sylvain 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin

This lovely Gevrey by our organic friends, Jane et Sylvain, is 45 to 60 year-old vines, certified organic, mostly in En Pallud (below 1er Cru les Corbeaux).  The 2015 shows very pretty high-toned ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit with violet, soil, graphite and citrus peel. The palate is dense and balanced, with a mineral aspect missing in most  modern Burgundies, with supple ripe cherry and strawberry fruit with citrus and herbal notes. The finish is very long with red fruits, spice, citrus and saline minerals. This is a lovely old-fashioned Burgundy that is delicious now and should age nicely, best perhaps 2022 - 2030.

Laguerre 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Blanc

(On Sale through June 9th Was $17.99)  Eric Laguerre's "Le Ciste," (named after a flowering bush in and around his vineyards) is certainly one of the most distinctive whites of the Roussillon. Grown in Eric's high-elevation vineyards on acidic soils of decomposed granite, the wine is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Yields are about 20 Hl/Ha, harvesting is by hand in small baskets, fermentation (wild yeasts) and aging is in small barrels. Complex aromas of lemon oil, thyme, hay and white fruits—a lovely melange with contributions from each variety and especially showing the Marsanne and Roussanne in 2015. The palate is dense, stony and saline with herbal, citrus, almond and white fruit flavors. The finish is long with mineral acids and white fruits that linger on the palate. Complex and distinctive as a young wine, this will accompany grilled fish as well as fish and chicken in sauce and goat cheeses, and should develop nicely with a few years of cellaring. Really a Grand Cru of the Roussillon and a great value! DL

Laguerre 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Blanc

(On Sale through June 9th Was $13.99) 2016 is a great vintage for Eric Laguerre's EOS Blanc! From 30% Grenache Blanc, 40% Maccabeo and 30% Rolle (Vermentino) grown on granite soils in Eric's high-altitude organic vineyards. The increased percentages  of Maccabeo and Rolle have made this lovely wine even more distinctive, showing subtle aromas of dried pear, hay, citrus, herbs and  stone. The palate is refreshing and clean with pear, citrus peel, almond, thyme and stone flavors, very crisp and dry and with nice density and length. This very versatile wine will pair with everything from oysters, to grilled fish to roast chicken, and will be very refreshing by itself on a warm summer day. DL

Petite Baigneuse (Philippe Wies) 2014 VDF Les Loustics

Grenache from schist soil in Maury, nestled near the Pyrenees mountains. Loustics is from an arid north-facing parcel, and always has a nice freshness to it. The shist soils don a particular mineral aroma and finish to the wine, blending well with the natural tannin to give some rustic character to the wine. In the end, it's an easy drinking, gentle and a bit "sauvage" expression of Grenache. Drink with a slight chill. No SO2 added. (On Sale through June 9th Was $16.99)

Sainte Barbe 2015 Viré-Clessé La Perriére

(On Sale through June 9th, Was $25.99) Jean-Marie Chaland owns two estates in Viré (Macon), Domaine Sainte Barbe and Domaine des Chazelles, both certified organic since 2006. The Sainte Barbe "la Perriere" is made from 35 year-old grapes from a half-hectare parcel near Viré on clay/limestone soils, never treated with herbicides. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with wild yeasts, the wine ages for 18 months, half in barrel, have in cuve inox. The 2016 shows pretty aromas of pear, apricot, lime flower and stone. There is nice richness on the palate but more saline mineral notes than the 2015, with chalky white fruits, a bit of citrus, verbena and a hint of oak in the long finish. This is a stylish white Burgundy that will accompany  any full-flavored fish dish, chicken in sauce and mild cheeses, and it will age nicely for 5 to 8 years.

Arndorfer 2013 Roter Veltliner Von den Terrassen 1979

100% Roter Veltliner planted in 1979 near the top of Gaisberg (Zöbing side). Known more for being a top site for growing Riesling than Roter Veltliner, Martin and Anna Arndorfer purchased this vineyard in 2010 (after being warned not to do so by relatives). The primary rock up there (300+ meters, south facing) is predominately Gfohler Gneiss along with Mica-Schist. Both 2012 and 2013 had very similar vinifications: few hours of maceration, aged in a mix of oak and stainless steel, with ten months on the lees and no fining. We are very lucky to have two different vintages to choose from, ultimately showcasing the influence of the vintage. Reflecting some similar development on the nose as the 2012 (salted toffee/brown butter), there is also a brighter note of Seville orange zest, and the palate reveals a higher acidity, with tangy orange/lemon oil, and brighter vegetal tones alongside the pear and apple fruit. Not austere by any means, but the 2013 does come off as stonier and edgier than the 2012. Cari Bernard

What to serve with all sorts of warming, rich, spiced desserts? Gewürztraminer Eiswein! Grown on loamy soils with limestone and clay in the Haardter Herrenletten, left to freeze in the winter and harvested with an intense level of sugars and acidity. Ehrhard, Carl 1994 Rheingau Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spätlese

Just released from Ehrhard's cellar, where these wines have been resting in bottle for almost 20 years. Whereas the 1993 is more piquant, a lighter and more delicate style, the 1994 is more burly, more evocative of classic Rheingau. The aromas are earthy, with a little smoke and a little mature Riesling character alongside notes of baked apple, pear and strawberry. The wine is a bit golden in the glass and firm on the palate, still with a lightly tannic finish. It's quite long with waves of flavor, and the mild sweetness mingles with sufficient acid to provide a finish that gets more and more interesting as it progresses. Lovely mature Riesling with smoky secondary character and balanced, complex but mellow fruit. -jfr

Schaefer, Willi 2011 Mosel Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #10

Like the Domprobst Kabinett #16, it's so exciting that this is already here in the U.S. and ready to be enjoyed or stashed away for 10+ years (either choice is, of course, correct). A bit wild and peachy, with potent, crisp mineral tones on the finish and just a hint of sea spray. This is slightly salty and vibrantly mineral. Light in body for a Spätlese and just singing right now. Christoph Schaefer says that #10 is always more of a "classic Spätlese," while #5 starts to approach Auslese in level of concentration. -jfr

Schaefer, Willi 2011 Mosel Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #5

Harvested at a slightly higher oechsle than #10, but lower than would be found in the Auslesen. It's a little more closed up-front aromatically than #10 and there is some noticeable botrytits. On the palate, though, you get slammed by a mineral punch. Raciness, zestiness, and only a hair more concentrated than #10. It's higher in residual sugar but tastes lower because of acid and mineral extract. The wine is just phenomenal. It's truly electric with a jagged, crunchy, mineral texture. There's just so much wild minerality shining through the sugar, and there's so much energy compacted in here that is set to expand over the years. I love this. -jfr

Castellroig 2011 Penedès Cava Brut Nature Reserva

Castellroig's basic bottling is our house Cava and best-selling sparkler. We love it for its dry, minerally palate and perfect pearlescent fizz and balance at an unbelievably low price. The Brut Nature Reserva is a step up in price and complexity, with a minimum of 36 months of age on the lees before disgorgement (with no dosage). Tingly ginger, fennel and orange rind  tangle with earthy mushroom, savory yeast, chewy apricot skin, and rich almond oil, with a delicate bead and pronounced salinity. A freshly-shucked clam and a glass of bone-dry, long-aged Cava  like this one is salty, savory, synchronicity! Ariana Rolich

Gramona 2007 Cava Gran Reserva III Lustros

The Gramona family has been making wine in the town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia since 1816 and bottling under the family name since 1921. Home to one of the great, deep cellars of Cava county, Gramona does not release wines until they are perfectly mature and ready to drink Silken aromas of golden fruit, hazelnut, orange oil, and fresh yeasty bread. Although totally dry with no dosage, III Lustros displays a ripe palate of tangy ginger, jasmine, almond oil, orange water, and ripe fruit notes of pretty yellow plum and crisp golden apple, with added breadth, complexity, and autolytic elements due to 5 years of lees aging. Elegant and gastronomic, this is an ideal sparkling match for welcome appetizers and root vegetable gratins or soups. Ariana Rolich

Daniel Ramos Zerberos 2014 Castilla y León El Altar

El Altar is a singular Garnacha, from old vines planted on granitic sandy soils with large chunks of quartz, north-facing at 800 meters near the town of El Barraco in the Sierra de Gredos. Daniel Ramos is one of a handful of Gredos producers with a formidable understanding of and respect for the profound and varied terroirs of the region. In a region full of brilliant Garnachas, El Altar is particularly purely red-fruited, from one of the coolest parts of the region, with strawberry, cherry, red currant, and raspberry preserves, interwoven with rock rose, bergamot, resinous thyme, wild flower honey, and rainwater. Terroir Al Límit 2014 Priorat Dits del Terra

2014 is an incredible vintage of Dits del Terra, a south-facing, single vineyard of 90+ year-old Carignan vines, one of the first plots Dominik Huber and Eben Sadie pinpointed when starting Terroir al Limit. This bottling is always a highlight of Dominik Huber's lineup. Structured and serious, layered and spicy, with crunchy black berry fruit, exotic herbs, and loads of gritty mineral earth, fermented with whole clusters and aged in  large 3500L Stockinger foudre. Every year I take note of how Dits del Terra gets better and more interesting every year. Obviously, it is a perennial favorite! Ariana Rolich

Terroir Al Límit 2015 Priorat Vinum Verum Roc d'Aubaga Rose

As with most serious rosés, Roc d'Aubaga is really coming into its own with some time to evolve in the bottle. Dominik Huber of Terroir al Limit continues to defy expectations with bold, unique, yet relatively light wines from the sun-baked Priorat, famous for dense and powerful reds. Roc d'Aubaga is a whole cluster co-fermentation of  Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Grenache Blanc, with aromas of red currant, wild rose, and hibiscus, flowing onto the subtle yet exuberant palate of wild cherry and creamy berries, with watermelon pith, cherry pits, rose hips, tea leaf, chiseled minerality, fresh acid, and lots of length. Technically a clarete (blend of red and white grapes), this is a beautiful all-season rose, shining with richer duck dishes as well as grilled fish or flavorful raw dishes. Ariana Rolich

Groth 1985 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon

It's a pleasure to check in on these non-superstar California Cabernets. One's expectations for Monte Bello, Montelena, Mayacamas, and Diamond Creek are justifiably high; there are loads of pleasant surprises in the second rank. Oakville's Groth counts among these. Founded by an Atari executive in 1982, Groth specialized in Cabernets which married richness and elegance.

The 1985 Groth Cabernet is remarkably fresh. There is moderate bricking on the meniscus with a ruby center. Aromatically, there are layers of berry, plum, cedar, and spices. The tannins are resolved and the wine is supple and rich, but focused with lively acidity. There is still plenty of fruit and the finish is quite long and complex. Really great energy here! Enjoy after a brief decant with grilled New York strip or lamb loin chops.

Crowley 2013 Willamette Valley Chardonnay Four Winds

The 2013 was a wet vintage but strongly benefited growers who dry-farmed and took advantage of the sunshine after the late September rains. The Chardonnay comes from a dry-farmed, owned-rooted Wente clone vineyard on marine sedimentary soils in Willamette Valley. Bright and slightly oxidative, the palate resonates with flavors of lemon pith, lemon curd, underripe peach, and marzipan and brightens with the wine's pointilistic acidity and minerality.
