In a category of wine that is acutely expensive and where value is relative (and often hard to find), it's a pleasure to find those hidden gems who seem to over-deliver on deliciousness and price. In Burgundy it is especially tough to find, given the growing conditions of the last few years (frost, hail, rot, etc.) and the demand for the small quantity of high quality wines from the Côtes de Nuits. That's why it's a pleasure to offer the wines of Domaine Henri Felettig. In a Chambolle-Musigny, whose wines cost dearly, Felettig manages to offer plenty of bang (and finesse) for the buck. The vines are farmed organically, if not certified, the grapes are destemmed, and elévage is in a combination of new and used oak. The wines are perfumed, graceful, stylish, lifted, and precise. There is great terroir dilineation, mineral cut, and the strucure bodes well for aging. We hope you'll enjoy these lovely Burgundies. Happy hunting! John McIlwain
Red and black cherry, floral and spicy on the nose, perfumed with notes of black tea, and five spice. Mid-weight palate offers flavors of red cherry and black raspberry, raspberry syrup, overlaying spicy mineral tones and fine precision and poise. This is pretty, but has gravitas within. Decant, or better still hide in cellar for 5-7 years to allow elements to knit. A fine Charmes and a pleasure to drink! John McIlwain
Red-fruited, perfumed and spicy on the nose, redolent of wild strawberry, red currant, Morello cherry and rose petals. The mid-weight, supple palate offers flavors of red cherry and black raspberry, giving way to chalky soil notes. The 2014 has more volume and structure than the beautiful 2013 and will benefit from a long decant or 7-10 years in the cellar. Another lovely Charmes. John McIlwain
From vines averaging about 40 years old. The nose is perfumed and high-toned with red-fruited aromas of wild strawberry and sour cherry, giving way to vibrant chalky soil notes and savory herbal aromas. The mid-weight and lithe palate offers flavors of red and black cherry, raspberry on a well-knit and energetic finish with bright acidity and ripe tannins. This is pretty, rather than powerful, but has the inherent balance to age beautifully over the next 10-15 years. This is lovely Chambolle and a terrific value. John McIlwain
From two parcels of vines on the border with Bonnes Mares and Les Cras to the south. The 2014 Felettig Les Fuées combines the brooding gravitas of the former with the bright-fruited drive of the later. Earthy and perfumed. The tension between bright pure red and black fruits and pungent core of minerality is exquisite. Lifted and grounded. Generous and precise. Needs a bit of time for the elements to knit, but this is truly lovely. John McIlwain
From the lieux-dits Les Chalendins and Aux Jachées. The 2014 Vosne-Romanée from Domaine Gilbert et Christine Felettig offers great value in a village where affordable is (at best) a relative term. The nose offers an array of attractive floral and dark fruit aromas leaning more towards hedge fruits than orchard fruits. On the palate the wine offers wild blackberry and raspberry flavors on a succulent spicy and tangy finish. A lovely Vosne for the mid-term cellaring and a tremendous value for the appellation. Quite tasty now, with air; better still in 5-7 years and beyond. A solid choice for Peking duck and certainly a treat with a perfectly cooked hamburger. John McIlwain
