Domaine Chantal Lescure

We are proud to again offer the wines of Domaine Chantal Lescure, an important organic estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, proprietors of 18 hectares from Meursault in the Côte de Beaune to Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits. Founded in 1975 by Chantal Lescure and Xavier Machard de Gramont, this family domain is now owned by their two sons Aymeric and Thibault and directed by François Chaveriat. Upon Chaveriat's arrival in 1996 the use of herbicides was stopped and the estate has been practicing fully organic methods since 2000, certified since 2006. The estate has a very high percentage of old vines in a superb collection of parcels including .42 hectares in Vosne-Romanee "Les Suchots" and 30 ares in the lieu-dit "Montiotes" in the upper part of the Clos de Vougeot.

Francois Chaveriat of Chantal Lescure

We tasted 2018s at the estate last January - they are gorgeous wines showing the ripeness of 2018 with bright, elegant texture, great purity of fruit and beautiful minerality. Fifteen-plus years of organic farming of course contributes to this as do the estate's slow fermentations with wild yeasts, minimal pigeage and bottling without fining or filtration. Another factor in the subtle fruit and terroir expression in these wines is the careful use of sulfur-dioxide, with the reds averaging around 30 mg/L of total SO2 which is very low for Burgundy. Our first shipment of 2018s includes wines that will drink beautifully now, although most will also benefit from medium-term cellaring as well. The Bourgogne Rouge "Les Verduns" for example, is a true wine of terroir from the slope above Pommard that will drink beautifully over the next 8 to 10 years. We hope you will try these superb wines, rarely seen in the US, and we again offer our congratulations to François Chaveriat for his great work at this estate. (Also available are the last bottles of the superb 2017 NSG "Damodes," 2017  Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "les Suchots" and 2017 Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot.)

Domaine Jean-Claude Rateau

Our yearly visit last January to the voluminous cellar of Jean-Claude Rateau on the Route de Bouze outside of Beaune, was delightful as usual, with the added treat of tasting 2018s and 2019s - two vintages of beautiful ripeness but retaining the earthy flavors and bright acidity always present in Jean-Claude's wines. We've just received our second shipment of these beautiful biodynamic wines which offer sensational quality and value to anyone interested in old-fashioned, lighter, more natural styles of Burgundy.

The 2019 reds that have been bottled early are particularly vibrant, juicy and delicous and will provide superb drinking over the next three to five years. We especially love the 2019 Côte de Beaune "La Grande Chatelaine" - this great vineyard site on the Montagne de Beaune, northeast of the 1er Crus, produces whites of great character and complexity. The 2018 "Prévoles" is the most structured of the Beaune "village" wines - vinified with whole clusters, it's beautifully sapid and complex,  and will drink well over the next ten-plus years. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin shows the brawny side of Gevrey in this vintage, a big, black-cherry infused wine that will cellar beautifuuly. The 2018 Beaune 1er Crus are oustanding - the "Coucherias" Blanc is a dense and delicious wine with mineral, almond, citrus and ripe white fruits, and both the "Reversées" and "Bressandes" are complex, elegant, deep and very long. Thank-you Jean-Claude for 40 years of great farming and these superb old-fashioned Burgundies!

"Lyre Ouverte" pruning in the Hautes-Cotes

Jean-Claude Rateau created his domain in 1979 with a few family parcels, always in biodynamic agriculture, and now cultivates 10 hectares in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Beaune and Gevrey-Chambertin. Only a light and superficial plowing is done in summer, respecting wild plants and keeping hedges and fruit trees along the vines. Minimal fertilizers are used, always organic composts, as well as biodynamic preparations. Replantings are by massale selection, seeking a great diversity in the parcels, often with co-planted varieties, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc in La Grande Chatelaine. Fermentations are with wild yeasts, of course, with the goal of making wines with no additives, with minimal added SO2.

These superb wines from Chantal Lescure and Jean'Claude Rateau offer sensational value to any lover of Burgundy! Quantities are extremely limited, wines arrive 12/4.

Chantal Lescure 2018 Côte de Beaune Clos des Topes Bizot Blanc

"Le Clos des Topes Bizot" is a unique spot, high on the slope in Beaune just above the 1er Cru "L'Ecu," facing east, in a terroir of clay and pebbles over limestone. Harvested by hand into small crates, slow fermentation (4 to 8 months) with wild yeasts, 15 month élevage in barrel without battonage, 10% new. The 2018 Clos de Topes Bizot was kept on the lees longer due to the ripeness of the vintage. The wine shows floral ripe white fruits, apricot and almond; the palate is rich and expressive with white fruits, pineapple, citrus and mineral flavors that continue in the long finish. This is a delicous and affordable white Burgundy to serve with lobster, shrimp, a full-flavored fish dish and white meats. David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2018 Meursault

The Chantal Lescure Meursault is from a tiny parcel called "les Pellands" on deep sandy clay soils over limestone  below "Charmes Dessous." The 2018 finished its alcoholic fermentation in August 2019 and was still in barrel on the lees when tasted in January 2020. The wine shows elegant aromas, very "Meursault" with almond, pear, citrus  and earth. The palate is elegant and bright with lovely minerality below the white fruits, finishing beautifully with firm acidity. This is a lovely Meursault, unblemished by excess oak, batonnage or sulfur and it's an excellent value as well. David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2018 Bourgogne Rouge Les Verduns

The Chantal Lescure Bourgogne Rouge "Les Verduns" is from 45 year-old vines on a soil of "marnes blanches"  in this unusual west-facing parcel high on the slope adjacent to Pommard "Les Vignots." Vinification is 100% with whole-clusters giving a firm structure to this very classy Bourgogne Rouge. The wine shows elegant high-toned  quite floral aromas of earthy Morello cherry and strawberry with hints of spice, mint and rose petal. The palate is earthy and mineral with saline acidity underlying ripe wild strawberry and red currant fruit. This shows the ripeness of 2018 but with lovely bright fruit and freshness. The finish is long and sappy, dominated by mineral and red currant  flavors that linger on the palate. This is not a fruit bomb, but is a very satisfying red Burgundy that will benefit from many hours of aeration or cellaring for 5 to 8  years. David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2018 Côte de Beaune Clos des Topes Bizot Rouge

"Le Clos des Topes Bizot" is a unique spot with vines planted in 1960,  high on the slope in Beaune just above the 1er Cru "L'Ecu," facing east, in a terroir of clay and pebbles over limestone. The grapes from this high elevation vineyard are harvested late and undergo a short pre-fermentation maceration, aging is in two and three year-old barrels. The 2018 shows high-toned aromas of ripe black cherry and red currant fruit with violet, brown spice, earth and citrus, quite elegant. The palate is dense and earthy with sappy black cherry and black raspberry - intensely mineral with firm acidity, earth and black fruits that linger in the long finish. This is a quite elegant, beautifully balanced and "mineral" Burgundy at a very reasonable price, that will benefit from a few hours open or three to five years of cellaring.  David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vallerots

Apparently Les Vallerots 1er Cru is a near monopoly of Chantal Lescure on a steep slope in the combe above "Vaucrains" on very shallow stony soils over the limestone at 260m altitude. Aged in approx 30% new oak by Francis Miquel. The nose is initially closed and tight with deep red fruit aromas emerging with notes of black raspberry, plum, cherry pit and a hint of anise. The palate shows deep, dense red fruits with great elegance and energy, a superb combination of fruit and terroir. This will need a long decant if drinking now, best to hold 3 - 5 years then enjoy until 2035+ David Lillie

Rateau 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Bressandes

Jean-Claude Rateau has a large parcel in the 1er Cru Les Bressandes on a steep slope facing east with pebbly clay/limestone soils, conducted in biodynamic farming since 1979. The soil is warm and well-drained giving ripe, structured wines. There is a 21-day cuvaison with manual cap-punching followed by 18 months in old barrels.Even with the minimal extraction practiced at the estate, the 2018 Bressandes shows a dense red/black color and lush aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberry, quite deep with sous-bois, violet, graphite and citrus. The palate is dense, elegant and chalky with blackberry, earth, bitter chocolate and minerals with terrific length of black fruits, earth and juicy acidity. Hints of iron, blood and roast meat indicate a very interesting aging potential for this wine. Given the weight and ripeness of the vintage, the wine still seems balanced and frames the copious fruit in ample acidity and tannin. This is a beautiful wine that will give great pleasure in its youth and should be a superb mature wine as well, with a long life ahead of it...  David Lillie

Rateau 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversées

From vines grown in the calcareous clay soils of Les Reversées premier cru toward the bottom of the hill in the center of the slope by Les Teurons. This is a bit more delicate and lower in alcohol than Rateau's "Bressandes" but still quite deep and generous in 2018 showing ripe  black cherry, boysenberry, notes of cherry pit and earth on the nose. The palate is quite dense but still with nice brightness with ripe black fruits, hints of iodine and iron and  soil beneath supple structure. Succulent acidity and savory mineral notes offset the ripeness and lend energy and drive on a rich, palate-coating finish which is very long with elegant black raspberry and red currant fruit.  The purity of fruit and earth notes are finely balanced - this is an excellent Burgundy for the mid-term. A fine pairing with braised chicken thighs with mustard, tarragon, and shallots. A great value from the pioneer of biodynamic Burgundy!

Chantal Lescure 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Chouacheux

From a 1.5 hectare parcel of 50+ year-old massale selection vines on clay/limestone soils rich in iron, in this excellent 1er cru vineyard at the foot of the slope in Beaune. (Near Pommard and below "Les Vignes Franches" and the "Clos des Mouches") 2018 is a great vintage for the Chantal Lescure "Chouacheux" which  shows very floral aromas of ripe, fresh red and black fruits, with hints of brown spice, citrus zest and earth. There is ripe, sappy, chalky fruit on the palate which is silky and elegant with raspberry, red currant and cherry fruit, really lovely and very long - backed by firm acidity and the ever-present core of minerality found in the Chantal Lescure wines. Quite delicious now, this beautiful Chouacheux is highly recommended and should be best 2024 - 2035+.  David Lillie

With aeration, the palate shows a round, velvety, chalky texture backed by firm acidity with violet, plum, cherry and strawberry fruit, mint, bitter chocolate and earth that continue in the long, sappy finish. Chantal Lescure 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Bertins

From organically farmed old massale-selection vines with small grapes, in Les Bertins in the southern part of Pommard, close to Volnay on soils of brown clay over hard limestone and limestone debris. Les Bertins has a greater amount of limestone than other Pommard premier crus, and the wines are sometimes a bit lighter and more "Volnay-like" in character. This shows the classic boldness of Pommard and the fresh ripeness of the 2018 vintage with aromas of wild rose, black raspberry, cherry liqueur and spice. The medium weight palate is dense with cooling minerality and mouth coating, silky tannins framed with ripe red cherry and macerated raspberry, finishing with long, delicate notes of spice, rose hips, and black tea leaf. This is quite delicious as a young wine but will obviously benefit from five years of cellaring, drink until 2035.

Chantal Lescure 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Mombies

Was $59.99

The lieu-dit "Les Mombies" has limestone clay soils washed down from higher on the slope, the vines average 40 years of age. The 2018 Les Mombies shows lovely freshness in this very ripe vintage with aromas of strawberry and cherry liqueur with hints of darker fruit and game. The fresh, chalky palate offers a melange of red fruits - raspberry, red currant, cherry - with good concentration over an earthy mineral core with fine fresh acidity and nice lift on the finish.  This will be fun drinking as a young wine due to the fresh, vibrrant fruit and ought to shine with 3-5 years in the cellar and beyond.  David Lillie

The 2017 "Les Damodes" shows a bright red/black color with very floral aromas of black cherry and strawberry liqueur, with hints of mint, licorice and brown spice. There is deep black cherry, strawberry and red currant fruit on the palate which is chalky, round and ripe and is nicely balanced by bright acidity, a bit of tannin and a hint of oak. This opens up with aeration becoming more complex, with pretty red fruits lingering in the finish. Quite delicious now, this will show best in 5 to 8 years when the tannins and oak have integrated.  David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots

2017 Les Suchots. A bit backwards on opening, mostly showing forest floor and tart berries. But with air, the nose unfurls to offer effusive aromas of wild raspberry, blackberry liqueur, and crushed rose petals. The palate is generous and coltish with ripe flavors of Bing cherry, turned earth, and exotic spices, with good density and a fine core of minerality. Not quite as nervy as the 2016, but this has fine balance, ripe tannins, and sneaky persistence. Delicious with guinea hen in a red wine sauce with mushrooms over grits. But I can see enjoying this with gamier fare. This shows plush fruit and savory soil notes and should gain in complexity with a few years in the cellar. John McIlwain

Rateau 2019 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc

Jean-Claude Rateau makes lovely Biodynamic wines in the Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune in his east-facing vineyard of clay/limestone and marne soils.  In the dry, hot 2019 vintage, yields were extremely low so Jean-Claude combined his Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc into this cuvee which is quite round and lucious showing floral aromas with ripe pear, apple and spice with hints of citrus and almond. The palate is rounder and more ripe than usual, but perfectly balanced with pear, citrus and stone flavors, with terrific length and firm acidity. This food friendly wine will accompany everything from oysters and grilled seafood to roast chicken and mild cheeses. Delicious now or cellar for 5 to 8 years. This is a delightful Burgundy and a great value!  David Lillie

Rateau 2019 Côte de Beaune La Grande Chatelaine

About a kilometer or two northwest of the Beaune 1er Crus, La Grande Chatelaine is a cooler site on the Montagne de Beaune with soils comprised of gravel and clay over limestone. Stone fruit and pear skin, white flowers and wet stone on the nose. Bright and fresh aromatically. The mid-weight palate is racy but full and dense due to the low yields  of 2019,  with fresh orchard fruit and lemon oil flavors, dancing astride sapid herbal notes with a clinging stoniness on the long, mouthwatering, expansive finish. Serve wth seared scallops, halibut or other full-flavored fish. This is lovely ripe and vibrant Chardonnay from a unique vineyard site - drink over the next 5 to 8 years.

The 2018 Beaune Les Prévoles (a lieu-dit below 1er Cru Chouacheux and les Tuvilains) was vinified with the stems, bringing just the right structure to this lush and beautiful wine which shows beautiful ripe aromas of cherry and black raspberry with rose, earth, citrus and brown spice.  The palate is chalky and sapid, showing the ripeness of the 2018s, with lush berry fruits enveloping firm acidity and mineral flavors. Really a lovely wine and quite delicous now, full and ripe enough for grilled meats, as well as chicken and pork dishes and cheeses such as morbier, tomme de savoie. "This fertile soil gives wines that are open and joyous, with delicate spice notes, giving great pleasure in their youth and capable of long-term aging." (J-C Rateau) Indeed the 2019 Clos des Mariages is a gorgeous wine showing a bright mélange of black cherry, strawberry and raspberry with hints of spice, citrus, licorice and violet. The palate shows dense, chalky fruit, sappy and ripe but retaining a nice lightness of body with firm acidity and mineral flavors that continue in the very long, juicy finish.
