New Arrivals and Returning Favorites!

Share

A slew of new wines have arrived in the past few weeks, all very appropriate for these Summer months we find ourselves in. From chiseled whites, to dark roses and light "chillable" reds, most of these offerings are ready to accompany any picnic, barbeque, or rooftop party, and when it's time for a warm meal in an over air-conditioned apartment, there are some returning favorites from southern France that will satisfy the craving for a hearty red. They also happen to be perfect with anything off the grill too!

Of note from Austria are the wines of Christophe Heiss, who has taken the helm at his family's winery in the Kamptal, while also producing his own line of wines under the Malinga label. The Gruner Veltliner is exceptional and hard to put down, and the Rotburger is generous, crunchy and quite versatile. The Puzsta wines are back too! From Claus Preisinger, these are very tasty wines, ready for immediate consumption.

Of note from Spain, two VERY appropriate, refreshing and pristine Albarinos are back in stock, from Albamar and Vimbio. The iconic Txakolina wines from Ameztoi are back, in all of their zippy glory. The white is bright and snappy, and of course the rosado has won the hearts of countless wine enthusiasts the world over. From Catalunya, the Sileo Montsant is well worth a try, both elegant and hearty, a darn good Montsant by all accounts.

The delicious lineup from Les Sablonnettes are in, more on that humble and legendary estate later this month, but no need to wait for an eloquent newsletter to start popping bottles of their Summer-ready Ceci N'est Pas Un Rose, or Copains d'Abord and Les Copines Aussi, two utterly charming natural reds that are STILL ridiculously affordable given the pedigree.

From the Languedoc, we celebrate the return of the wines from Thierry Navarre. Besides making superb Saint-Chinian reds that go beautifully with grilled meats and stews, Thierry maintains local tradtions going back hundreds of years with his cultivation of ancient varieties such as Oeillade, Ribeyrenc, Ribeyrenc Blanc and Terret.  Thierry's vines are all on high, hillside vineyards, in this case above Roquebrun, northeast of Saint-Chinian in the Languedoc. We're happy to have his 2019 Saint-Chinian "Laouzil" and 2019 "Olivier" back in stock and we're thrilled to offer three of Thierry's unique local specialties from "forgottten" varietes - the 2020 "Lignieres Blanc" made from  Ribeyrenc Blanc, Grenache Gris and Clairette du Languedoc, and his two "Vin d'Oeillades" red and rosé, made from this ancient low-alcohol variety related to Cinsault. All three are totally unique and delicious and are among the greatest values in the store!

Terraced vines at La Ferme Saint-Martin

Just arrived from the talented Thomas Jullien at La Ferme Saint-Martin in Beaumes-de-Venise is the estate's best wine, the Cuvée Saint-Martin. This very natural Rhône red is equal to a good Chateauneuf-du-Pape and is a great match for a steak off the grill. Don't overlook Thomas' hearty and satisfying 2018 Terres Jaunes, and for perfect summer rosé refreshment at a great price you can't beat his 2020 Ventoux "Sur la Rose!"

Malinga (Christoph Heiss) 2019 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner

Christoph Heiss has not only taken over the family winery, he's also releasing a few wines as a side project under the 'Malinga' name, using only choice parcels of the family's 12 hectares of vines. Located in eastern Kamptal, the vines grow on mostly loess soils, and the family started conversion to organic farming in 2013. Grapes are hand-harvested and ferment spontaneously, the wine ages on the lees about a year in 500L neutral oak barrels before being bottled unfined/unfiltered and with low sulfur addition. Herbs and pollen on the nose give way to a medium-bodied palate with an oily richness deftly balanced by vibrant acidity. The 2019 is particularly delicious, with a textured, almost waxy mid-palate, and long mineral finish.

Malinga (Christoph Heiss) 2019 Kamptal Rotburger

This is a really friendly, medium bodied offering from Christoph Heiss, who runs his family's winery in the Kamptal, and also releases a small amount of wine from choice parcels under the "Malinga" name. Rotburger is a cross between Sankt Laurent and Blaufrankisch, and this one shows the fresh St. Laurent snap, and the brambly wild berry and black fruit profile of Blaufrankisch. Great on its own with a chill, perfect for summer sipping, but definitely has some material, so better chilled, not ice cold. Grapes go through whole cluster carbonic maceration for 10 days, and wine is aged for about 9 months in 500L Austrian barrels.  -EL

Melsheimer 2019 Mosel Riesling Handwerk

Thorsten Melsheimer has been farming organically in the Mosel since 1995 (certified ECOVIN) and became Demeter (biodynamic) certified in 2013. The 'Handwerk' is actually a blend of three different barrels: a QBA trocken, Kabinett, and Spätlese. Off dry, and high-toned with a fine bead of mineral character within, brimming with energy and perfect for the soft shell crab, flowering chives, or soy sauce noodles at Great New York Noodletown, or your favorite neighborhood Chinese spot.

Wasenhaus 2020 Baden Grand Ordinaire

Alexander Götze and Christoph Wolber of Wasenhaus met while working in Burgundy. The friends returned to Germany with the idea of finding old vines and making pure, low-intervention wines. The 2020 Grand Ordinaire—formerly Baden Nouveau— is fermented  100% whole cluster under CO2 for 10days before pressing off and finishing fermentation in tank. Bottled under cork rather than crown cap with a minimum of sulfur. The robe is a purplish ruby. The nose offers aromas of crushed strawberry, pomegranate, and cherry stone. The palate is lightweight and racy, with wild berry fruit, a hint of stemmy spice, and a crunchy mineral kick on the finish. And while one wouldn't mistake this for a bottling from the Cote d'Or, this has a satisfying savory core to temper all that exuberant fruit. John McIlwain

Albamar 2020 Rias Baixas Albariño

Xurxo Alba is making a number of expressions of Albariño and other local Galician grapes in Cambados, in the Rías Baixas DOC in Galicia. His farming and winemaking are innovative and experimental, as he pursues organics and biodynamics in this challenging climate, ferments his wines exclusively with native yeasts, and adds little to no sulfur during production. This is an extremely Atlantic-influenced area, and the wines show that influence clearly. The entry level cuvée is made from grapes sourced from multiple sites with mainly sandy soil. The fruit from each parcel is vinified separately (some in stainless steel, some in barrels) gaining structure and complexity of flavor from six months spent on the fine lees. This is a very good, classic expression of Albariño with plenty of saline minerality and joyous notes of stone-fruit and sea air.  -BF

Adega de Vimbio 2018 Rias Baixas Albarino

Located in O Rosal, the most southern sub-zone of Rías Baixas in the Minho valley overlooking Portugal, Vimbio is a small winery, with a total of 2.5 hectares, planted in 1985 and owned by young couple Martín Crusat and Patricia Elola. Practicing biodynamic farming. There are no herbicides or systemic treatments applied (except for minimal application against mildew). The wine has a beautiful intensity on the palate and vibrant acidity. On the nose, fresh white flowers, light herbs and Atlantic saline notes mingle with tart lemon and creamy nectarine notes. This is a great wine to pair with seafood, grilled fish and any summery salads. -CC

Cantalapiedra 2017 Rueda Cantayano Verdejo

Isaac Cantalapiedra and his son Manuel work their organically farmed family plots of Verdejo in their homeland of Rueda to produce wines that show the terroir, density, and authentic character of Verdejo that is so hard to find. Cantayano, their “village” wine is from 3 plots around La Seca, all hand harvested, macerated briefly on the skins, and fermented in mainly steel vats with some used barrels. The wine is raised on the lees for 8 months before bottling. On the nose, Cantayano shows stone fruit, apple, and herbaceous notes, while the palate is surprising dense, with a beautiful seam of acidity. A lovely and affordable Spanish white wine that shows the potential of Verdejo when the grape variety is treated with respect. Ben Fletcher

Cantalapiedra 2018 Tinto de Toro 'Arenisca' Paraje Los Panaderos

Manuel and Isaac Cantalapiedra source their Toro (Tempranillo) grapes from high-elevation, organically-certified vineyards near Villabuena del Puente. The grapes are harvested by hand and 90% are destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel; the remaining 10% ferment with the stems in open-top fermenters. There is no filtering or fining, and the only sulfur addition is small and takes place at bottling. This shows the depth and intensity of classic Tinto de Toro (Tempranillo), without the extraction or intense tannins that we typically think of in the region. Instead, there are delicate spice notes, mineral structure, and refined, pure red fruit notes. A real treat, and a great value. Ben Fletcher

Companyia Viticola Sileo 2019 Montsant

This is the newest project from Agusti Torello Roca, focused on producing red wines from the Montsant DO. Mostly Garnacha, with a small percentage of Carignan, from a mixture of limestone, clay and granite soils. Fermentation is in stainless steel and aging is in 500L used French barrels. This is a beautiful Montsant that favors balance and acidity over extraction, new oak, and high alcohol.   -EL

Pierre & Marianne Duroché 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin

Pierre Duroché  is rapidly becoming an A-list address in Gevrey-Chambertin. Not only does he have terrific holdings but the wines are a model of understatement - carefully farmed and made without any bells and whistles. These Gevrey vines came to him from his wife Marianne's family. The fruit is completely de-stemmed, fermented with natural yeasts and aged in no more than fifteen percent new oak.

Navarre 2019 Saint-Chinian Cuvée Olivier

2019 is a great vintage for Thierry Navarre's Cuvée Olivier, from his oldest vines of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grown in his mountainside vineyards in Saint-Chinian. Deep and very complex aromas of black raspberry and blueberry with hints of roast meats, espresso, violets, chocolate and citrus. Lovely palate of ripe red and black fruits, earth and citrus lifted by firm acidity. This is a beautiful Languedoc red — rich, ripe and complex and surprisingly "fresh" with good acidity and fabulous length. Organic farming, minimal sulfur. Highly recommended.

Navarre 2020 Vin de France Lignieres Blanc

From a vineyard co-planted with old varieties - Ribeyrenc Blanc, Grenache Gris and Clairette du Languedoc - Thierry Navarre made the 2020 "Lignières." It's a delighful wine with slightly spicy and floral aromas of white peach, almond, pear and honeysuckle,  dry and dense  on the palate though a little riper than usual, with mineral, herbal and dried stone fruit flavors with firm acidity - really lovely, a great aperitif or serve with fish or chicken in sauce, salads, sheep and goat cheeses. Ferme Saint-Martin 2017 Beaumes-de-Venise Cuvée Saint-Martin

(Arrives Tuesday 7/20) Guy and Thomas Jullien at la Ferme Saint-Martin are making some of the finest wines in the Southern Rhône on their organic estate in Suzette, near Beaumes-de-Venise. One of their best wines, the Cuvée Saint-Martin is made with 85% Grenache from 60 to 105 year-old vines grown on clay over limestone (Triassic) soils. Vinification is with wild yeasts, with no added SO2 until a tiny amount before bottling - this is a "natural" wine of great quality.  The 2017 shows a deep red/black color, with ripe plum, red currant and strawberry aromas, very floral, elegant and lush with hints of licorice, garrigue and earth. The palate is ripe and dense with deep chocolately blackberry and plum liqueur with earth, licorice, mint and spice, finishing with firm acidity and citrusy red fruits. This is an outstanding southern Rhône red and a great value - serve with grilled foods, Moroccan tagines and Provençal stews. David Lillie

Ferme Saint-Martin 2018 Beaumes-de-Venise Terres Jaunes

An excellent value from Beaumes-de-Venise, 'Les Terres Jaunes' is a blend of 75% Grenache and 20% Syrah both from 30+ year-old vines grown on a unique terroir of Triassic limestone/clay soils. Organically farmed with vegetation maintained between the rows; fermented naturally with no additives, aged in concrete with very little sulfur added at bottling, this is a truly terroir-focused wine. I love the rich texture with powdery tannins, and after some time decanting, it definitely softened and opened up. Full of ripe black cherry, plum, and preserved raspberries with more savory undertones of olive, oregano, dried tobacco and a touch of dark chocolate.  The wine is dense and long with delicious supple fruit, a bit brighter than the 2017. Plenty of complexity in this deep Southern Rhône wine to sit and contemplate, and would be excellent with heartier or gamey fare. MD

Thibaud Capellaro 2020 VdF Le Temps d'une Bise

60% Marsanne / 40% Viognier, from the northern Rhone. Thibaud Capellaro is situated in Condrieu, and sources fruit for his 'Slope' project from vineyards close to home, and in the Ardeche. The label suggests some of what we get here, with white grapes mingling with a chunk of granite. Unmistakably a Northern Rhone white, with medium weight, and some viscosity in the mid-palate. The Viognier doesn't poke out here, so there is no herbaceous or spice driven side to the wine, but the Viognier does lend nice brightness and zip to keep the wine fresh on the palate. Really an impressive white for this young up and coming winemaker. -EL

Hager, Matthias 2017 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Seeberg

Matthias Hager has been making wine on 13 hectares around the village of Mollands in the Kamptal for about 15 years, started converting his vines to biodynamics in 2005, and has been Demeter certified Biodynamic since 2008. Seeberg is a south-facing vineyard in the Kamptal (west of Zöbing), with warmer days followed by a cooling influence from the forest to the north, soils here are a mix of sand, clay, and slate. Harvest is by hand, grapes ferment spontaneously and the wine ages in old oak barrels. Concentrated and dense palate with notes of Fuji apple, nectarine, mango, beeswax, honeysuckle, and apricot; effusive and bright, lovely ripe fruit balanced by acidity, this Grüner drinks almost like a Riesling! Incredibly enjoyable now, this wine has the stuffing to last at least 5-10 years in your cellar. Cari Bernard

Preisinger, Claus 2020 Burgenland Puszta Libre!

Unusually slender for a red wine bottle, the Puszta Libre! bottle shape takes its inspiration from vintage soda bottles, a cheeky nod to how chuggable this wine is; and if that's not enough we are also instructed by the label to "drink cold"! Mostly Zweigelt with Sankt Laurent, fermented in stainless steel and aged in large (600L to 1000L) used oak barrels. The 2020 just arrived (April '21) and is ready to drink. Though not the most complex wine in our Austrian section, there is great material in the mid-palate, with some dark berry fruit, and plenty of punch on the attack, with an easy but defined finish. It seems like its somehow more delicious than ever before. Try one if you're curious. Buy at least two if you're already a fan, as the first bottle will likely disappear in a flash!  -EL

Absolutely charming with a chill.  From the bottle:  "Polisson gourmand, ce rose s'est régalé de tous les fruits rouges du jardin il en rougit encore de gourmandise" Loosely translated: Naughty eater, this rosé has feasted on all of the red fruits of the garden and is still blushing with gluttony.

There's a bit of "barnyard" funk on the nose, though I think this is more a Grolleau thing than a natural wine thing. Balanced by lively acidity and pleasantly low in alcohol, this is a lush and delicious wine that will accompany grilled chicken or any lighter summer cuisine. Navarre 2019 Saint-Chinian Le Laouzil

Thierry Navarre's touchstone "Laouzil" is a blend of equal parts Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah from old vines planted on brown schist ("Laouzil" in the local dialect) soils in the rugged mountains of Roquebrun (Saint-Chinian). The grapes are de-stemmed and aged in neutral barrel before bottling with minimal sulfur. The robe is a lovely red/black in the glass. The wine shows seductive aromas of spiced plums, dried rosemary, and deeper notes of coffee and dry earth. The rich palate is bursting with black fruit flavors, peppercorn, and savory herbs with a structured texture of dense minerals and bright acidity on the long, persistent finish. This is a fascinating wine of terroir that Thierry says will be perfect in 5 years (though it's delicious now!).

(Arrives Tuesday 7/20) Oeillades is an ancient Languedoc variety, probably related to Cinsault. The 2020 has pretty high-toned red-currant, boysenberry, black plum, violet,  spiced citrus and smokey aromas, quite fresh and appealing. The palate has  red currant, blackberry and plum fruit, it's light to medium-bodied, but with lovely ripeness and depth with refreshing acidity and good sappy length. Good intensity of fruit but low alcohol, which makes it very food-friendly. Serve cool with charcuterie, burgers, grillled chicken and pork and mild cheeses. Thierry Navarre is one of the few people who still grow Oeillades - a nearly extinct grape that has a long history in the Langudedoc and is thought to be an old cousin of Cinsault. Thierry's Oeillades grows on the rugged mountainsides above Roquebrun in Saint-Chinian. The 2020 shows an intriguing light purple-tinged color in the glass. The nose offers abundant ripe  plum, red currant and peach aromas with delicate notes of lavender, cardamom and dried rose petals. The palate is light and wonderfully lifted with savory flavors  of dried cherry and red currant, very sapid and pure, with earth, herbal tea, and refreshing exotic citrus on the finish. The Slope wines come from organic vineyards in Ardeche, St. Joseph and some parcels in the Coteaux du Lyonnais. This is a 100% Syrah, Methode Ancestrale (Pet-Nat) that is truly delightful. Think French Lambrusco, but with more of a dark rosé profile. Ze-Ro is a Rosé of Syrah, unfined and unfiltered, from Thibaud Capellaro in Condrieu. Vines are from around the northern Rhone and Ardeche. Cornelissen, Frank 2019 Etna Rosso (not Rosato!) Susucaru

On the nose there are pomegranate seeds, red cherry (a little candied), blood orange essence, and very fresh aromas of island grasses and sea breeze. The palate begins with cranberry and cherry, with hints of raw cinnamon and a long finish of bitter herbs. The structure of this wine is probably my favorite part - a soft layer of tannin that falls on the tongue  turns into an engaging chew a few seconds later and a mouthwatering core of acidity keeps this wine incredibly upbeat. A lighter red that has so much textural definition. Also, we recommend chilling this red. David Hatzopoulos
