Bodegas 501 El Puerto de Santa Maria Zurbaran Cream

Bodegas 501 was founded in 1783 in El Puerto de Santa Maria. Their unusual and charming cream sherry — Zurbaran — does not date back that far, but no one seems to know how old it is! The solera had not been tapped for 20 years (and maybe more) before this wine was bottled and the results are fascinating. Aromas are rich and botanical, with halvah, ginseng, cocoa powder, fennel seed, pencil shavings, peanut skins, and cracker jacks. The sweet palate is not cloying like some cream sherries, but clear and bright: pretty fresh figs and chewy raisins, salty roasted peanuts, gentian root, milk chocolate, and more of those beguiling halvah and ginseng notes. This gets a rare rating of "Yummy!" and is highly recommended as a fresh alternative to port for cheese plates, desserts, or simply for drinking in repose. Ariana Rolich

Varnelli Amaro "Sibilla" 1 Liter

Named after the impressive mountain range in the Southwestern corner of the Marche, this spirit is a must-try for Amaro fans. The flavor profile definitely leans toward the drier, more herbaceous end of the spectrum and will seem quite bitter if you are used to Averna or Montenegro. The botanicals are wood smoked before maceration which adds a degree of complexity seldom found in Amari. Mountain honey is used sparingly to balance the bitter flavors. I have found Sibillia to be a delicious digestive, but also quite delightful at the shore when mixed with tonic and an orange rind. JR

Varnelli L'Anice Secco Speciale 1 Liter 46%

In Italy Varnelli is eponymous with this delicious Anise liqueur. Locally, Varnelli is splashed over espresso. The bottle says secco, but there is a touch of sweetness to the spirit that tempers the intensity of the anise flavor. This stuff makes your average Sambuca look like overly sugary candy water. There is a secret proprietary method for distilling the aniseed that remarkably preserves the anise’s medicinal quality and depth of flavor. The spirit is not bitter, but is still reported by the distillery to aid with digestion. JR

Bérêche, Raphael NV (2009 Base) Champagne Brut Nature Beaux Regards Chardonnay

This is a dense, stony, and impressive wine. The juice hails primarily from vines planted in 1902 (this makes them *incredibly* old by Champenois standards), from the vineyard called "Beaux Regards". The rest of the Chardonnay comes from Mareuil-le-Port. Upon first opening, the nose is quite striking, giving aromas of delicate white flowers, chrysanthemum, fresh cut grass, aromas we associate with Brut Nature Champagnes, when no addition of sugar has affected the wine's aromatics. The wine is fine in texture and incredibly dry; you'd never know it was from the rich 2009 vintage, which we attribute partially to avoidance of malolactic fermentation. There's slight Burgundy barrel influence on the nose and finish, but it works, as in a steely Grand Cru Chablis or Corton-Charlemagne. The wine's mineral grip shines through as it opens up. This wine is a terrific value considering the sheer power in the bottle. (disgorged December 2012) -msb

Doquet, Pascal 1995 Champagne Le Mesnil "Coeur de Terroir"

We learned from Champagneguide.net that this is the first all-Mesnil bottling that Pascal Doquet made once he took over the Domaine. Some of the base wine was aged in wood with no malolactic fermentation, this is a very high acid wine with lots of cut, even with dosage and almost two decades after the vintage. Slightly shrill and closed right out of the gate but with good structure and shelly, savory length on the palate, the wine becomes much more open and deliciously oxidative after 2-3 hours. Cashew-y and burnished but still deeply earthy and savory. The wine's sweet and nutty tones are balanced by savoriness and minerality. This is not a creamy Blanc de Blancs; the wine is taut and textured and a beautiful example of mature Mesnil. MSB

Tarlant NV Champagne Extra Brut Cuvée Louis (1999 base)

This wine really stood out at a tasting with Benoit Tarlant this winter. Based on the 1999 vintage with '98, '97, and '96 in the bottle as well, the wine is vinified in barrel, without malolactic fermentation, and is bottled Extra Brut (2 grams of sugar). 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this is a toasty, cheesy, nutty, savory bottle of wine that will resonate with mature Champagne lovers. Clos du Rouge Gorge (Cyril Fhal) 2011 VdP des Côtes Catalanes L'Ubac

This is one of the most rare and elegant wines of the south of France. According to Fhal, "L'Ubac (slope with the least sun) is from one of those rare parcels well suited to the Cinsault of the Roussillon. This variety, which made its reputation in certain wines before phylloxera, has been neglected or poorly planted since, often in the plains where its capable of prodigious, that is to say catastrophic, yields. This parcel is a 70 degree slope on gneiss facing due north, with 40 year-old vines worked by hand and by horse. It's the Pinot Noir of the south for me! A material very fine, very delicate, with length and a strong signature of terroir. With the Cinsault, there is Carignan from the same parcel planted in 1905, which, due to its age and its location on the steep slope, has truly a profile very mineral and fine. Whole bunch maceration, but foot-tread when put in cuve as I don't wish to have carbonic maceration. I keep the stems for the finesse of the tannins that they give. 20 month aging in 500 liter Austrian demi-muid."

Ecu (Guy Bossard) NV Methode Traditonelle La Divina Brut

We have always enjoyed the cuvée Ludwig Hahn from Guy Bossard at the Domaine de L'Ecu, named after a violinist friend of Guy's. Turns out it's also the name of a notorious Nazi war criminal, thus the wine has become "La Divina," a song by Ludwig the musician. At any rate it's a delicious and quite elegant sparkling wine made with Folle Blanche, Chardonnay, Melon de Bourgogne, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. Lovely aromas of citrus, stone, yellow fruits, honey and yeast, which continue on the very stony palate, with white fruits and herbal notes. Great as an apéritif or with full-flavored cheeses, and perfect for New Years Eve, of course. Great value, too, but only 3 cases came in, so grab it quickly. Biodynamic. DL

Pinon, François NV Vouvray Brut Non-Dosé (2011)

François Pinon's Vouvray Brut Non-Dosé is one of the finest non-Champagne sparkling wines you can find. Beautifully complex aromas of citrus, honey, herbs and earth, a creamy palate with great acidity and length. François' sparkling wines age beautifully and are better than many Champagnes at twice the price! DL

Chamonard 1998 Morgon Le Clos de Lys

Overshadowed by the lovely 1999s, '98 is not a vintage we remember, but in fact, despite frost and uneven spring weather, most of the summer was warm and sunny and the vintage was quite good. We're very happy to have this excellent 14+ year-old wine from Domaine Chamonard. The aromas are lovely, subtle and earthy with the lightest of red fruits, citrus, sous-bois and floral notes with secondary mushroom, musk and smoke. Very pretty. This continues on the palate which is light and velvety, with good acidity, really quite delicious. The finish tightens a bit with some dry tannin and dark leathery notes but the aromatics and mid-palate are so lovely, we're not complaining and neither will you....

Garnier 2005 Vin de France Bézigon Chenin Sous Voile

A lovely experiment by Jean-Christophe Garnier, with just a few cases avaialble for the US. Two barrels of Chenin Blanc from the Bezigon vineyard, not topped up, without added sulfur, which over five years became this lovely Jura-style white. Fino-sherry aromas which deepen with time into more Chenin-like white fruits. citrus and caramel. The palate is very saline, mineral and long. Give this wine a few hours to open up, if possible. Really a lovely stoney and Chenin-marked mid palate. Any lover of sous-voile wines should give this a try — next release in 2018!

Pierre Andre 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The 2004 vintage shows lovely, developed aromas of sweet tobacco leaf, bing cherry, rose water, and cinnamon, with a palate of cranberries, orange spice, wild strawberries and blackberries on the finish. A fantastic experience for lovers of Pierre Andre's younger wines or those in search of an elegant Chateauneuf with some age at a great price. As always, grapes are biodynamically farmed and fermented whole cluster. -AR

Texier 2009 St. Julien en St. Alban Pergaud Vieille Serine

Made from 80 to 90 year-old vines of Serine, generally regarded as an old version of Syrah (which evolved from Mondeuse Blanc and Dureza) with smaller berries which survived through massale selection, principally in Cote Rotie.  Serine gives a more aromatic and elegant wine that the larger berried modern Syrah. The 2009 Texier Vieille Serine shows the ripeness of 2009 with deep blueberry and blackberry fruit but with cool acidity and moderate alcohol. Elegant, balanced and insanely delicious, this is drinking well now and should develop nicely for five years or more. We have loved this wine since our first tasting from barrel in the winter of 2010, and we're very happy that Eric has seen fit to bless New York with a few more cases....

Magnien, Stephane 2011 Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru

From a tiny parcel of sixty year-old vines. This is a great bottle of Burgundy! It's sort of silly to describe a Grand Cru Burgundy based on a quick taste in the cellar—the basic message is that there is terrific structure in this wine backing up the glorious fruit, which is a bit more forward and deep than in 2010. Simply fabulous on the palate with great freshness, length and acidity. Superb, and will age beautifully...

Chandon de Briailles 2011 Corton Grand Cru Les Bressandes

This beautiful Grand Cru Burgundy shows high-toned, crunchy red and purple fruits on the nose with a healthy does of herbs, fruit seeds, forest floor, and earth. The palate is ripe and lip-smacking with high acidity and seemless integration of fruit, acidity, and tannin. A powerful wine, it's tightly wound and young-feeling now with ample potential to age. -msb

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Macon Cruzille Manganite

The Manganite is made with old-vine Gamay from the magnificent Macon-Cruzille vineyard of the Clos des Vignes du Maynes, whose untreated soils produce remarkably subtle and complex wines. Lovely aromas of red currant, strawberry, licorice and earth, the palate is bright with pure berry fruits with graphite and mineral notes, dense but light and balanced and with terrific length. This is a "living" wine made with zero additives that is really unique and delicious! Certified organic and biodynamic. Colin-Morey, Pierre-Yves 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Le Trezin

The "le Trezin" vineyard is the only village-level vineyard on the hill of Montrachet. It is a very cool site high up on top of the slope.  Puligny wines are very special in 2011 and this wine is no exception. The balance between the forward fruit and the acidity creates a dynamic tension — after the intial blast of fruit this thread of acidity comes out — a hallmark of the 2011 vintage. It is this beautiful acidity that introduces the very long finish. This wine is very forward; expressive with bright fruit, good mouthweight and is already very complex. It is chiseled, precise, elegant and racy.   Very "Puligny". This will drink well young and will put on weight and become more elegant as it ages.  This wine is a great value from Puligny Montrachet and there is not that much Puligny Montrachet produced in an abundant year, let alone a lean one.  Considering how little wine was produced in 2010 and 2012 it would be prudent to stock up on this wine. Lapuyade 2010 Jurançon Cuvée Marie-Louise

This is a superb Jurançon Moelleux, harvested in late December, about 85 grams/liter of residual sugar. Wonderfully complex aromas of apricot, candied citrus, flowers and exotic fruit with a hint of vanillin. Lemon confit, apricot, brown spice and chalky acids on the palate. A young wine that is gorgeous now but perhaps best in five to ten years. with more acidity than Sauternes, this is a great match for foie gras, lemon tarts and strong cheeses.

Ambrositsch, Jutta 2011 Wien Riesling Rosengartel

Rosengartel is a tiny section (1.6 hectare) on the Nussberg hill in the northernmost point of Vienna. The soil here is sandstone, marl and shale, and Jutta farms the vines biodynamically by hand, pruning and spraying preparations all on her own. The harvest is hyper-selective to make sure only the most pristine fruit makes it into the fermentation vat (each grape is checked, not just bunches). Off-dry Riesling is not what most people expect when they think of Austria, but this was such a compelling wine we couldn’t resist taking some for ourselves and offering it to our customers. Aromatically, all I could think was how alive it seems, with bright yellow and purple floral notes and a whole host of citrus and tropical fruits. The palate is defined by similar bright fruit and a seriously earthy, unique sense of minerality I’ve not encountered elsewhere in wine. This is the Rosengartel asserting its individuality in a most delicious way. The wine continues to evolve and really comes together after being open for an extended period so, as with all great Austrian white, don’t be afraid to decant or age this beauty. John Ritchie

Immich-Batterieberg 2011 Mosel Zeppwingert Riesling

Finally, Zeppwingert. Gernot only has .5 hectares and it's directly next to Batterieberg. It's a terraced, ungrafted, old-vine section, and the vines used to belong to our friends at Weiser-Künstler until they sold to Kollmann. Aromatically vivid, with a light underlying wild streak to the nose, the wine is the sweetest of the lineup (many others in the Mosel would call it a feinherb, though; this is still dinner Riesling). Perfect balance, and while some of the other wines may be more contemplative, Zeppwingert is hands down the most delicious. This is another one with "sky's the limit" aging potential. I'm excited to track its development over many years. -jfr

75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano, aged 9 years in barrel and 9 years in bottle. Sweet, pretty aromas of balsamic, raspberries, coriander and crunchy leaves. Fernando de Castilla NV Jerez Antique Oloroso 500ml

The sherries of Rey Fernando de Castilla are unlike any others. Despite a strong family resemblance among the various bottlings exemplified by elegant herbal depth, precise structure, and intense yet beautifully integrated acidity, each sherry is utterly unique. The 20+-year-old Antique Oloroso is enticing and memorable for its vibrant, velvety texture and seamlessly integrated notes of burnt toast, bitter nut skins, savory cocoa, dark spicy cinnamon, clove, mace, Guiness Beer, warm citrus zest, earthy marigolds, and the longest finish going on the sherry shelf. -AR

Bedrock 2012 Lodi Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard

Kirschenmann Vineyard's organic, dry-farmed, head-trained, own-rooted vines were planted in 1915 on the silica rich sandstone soils of the Mokelumne River AVA in Lodi (and recently purchased by Turley winemaker Tegan Passalacqua and his wife, Olivia). This is a stunning Zinfandel of clarity, complexity, and length, with aromas of silky red raspberry, blood orange, coriander, cherry blossom, and spicy cinnamon. The palate is fine, racy, and herbal, with briary black raspberry, purple flowers, tamarind, tea leaf, and subtle orange spice. Kirschenmann has verve and elegance reminiscent of well-tempered, high altitude Spanish Garnacha. A fascinating foil to Bedrock's Old Vines Zin or Heritage Red and a compelling pairing for sheeps milk cheese or simply grilled grass-fed meat. We look forward to many years of Kirschenmann to come! -AR

Kalin Cellars 1993 Sonoma County Chardonnay Cuvée LD Stealth So

For those not familiar with Kalin Cellars, we should say a few words.  Their release timetable is at least a decade behind most wineries.  This means that the 1993 Chardonnay has spent 20 years in their cellar achieving maturity – if only more producers had a system like this.  The wine certainly shows evolved Chardonnay character with stone, salt, caramel, apple fruit, and a touch of smoke.  The wine is rich and full-flavored, absolutely mature, and a rare opportunity.  JR

Cornelissen, Frank 2012 Etna VA (Vigna Alta) Munjebel Rosso No. 9

“VA” stands for “Vigne Alte,” and is comprised of Frank’s oldest vines in the high-altitude crus of Barbabecchi, Guardiola, and Tartaraci. The average vine is quite old at 80+ years and, quite impressively, is grown on native rootstock. We can’t blame the Phylloxera bugs for not wanting to climb the 900+ meters some of these vines reside on. I always find the VA bottling to have the most acid, and a wonderfully lifted floral quality to the wine. In this vintage the wines have gained in depth and concentration, but if you’re after one with a lighter touch, this is it. JR

Springbank 15 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky Campbeltown 750ml

Springbank, located at the southern tip of the Campbeltown peninsula on the west coast, is one of our favorite distilleries. It's the oldest independent, family-owned distillery in Scotland and still performs all aspects of production and aging on site. Never chill-filtered, Springbank is an incredibly elegant whisky—the 15-year-old, matured in sherry casks, is a fine after-dinner dram full of sweet, rich flavors like dark chocolate and raisins.

Arran Malt, The 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky Non-Chill Filtered

Isle of Arran was started in 1995 and is Arran’s only legal distillery. The island enjoys an abundant access to pure water, and the influence of the sea creates a warm sub-climate that facilitates the maturation of whisky in barrel. The 10-year-old shows very interesting citrus fruit and toffee complexity not usually found in relatively young malt. Arran’s flavor profile has a bit of something for every sort of Scotch enthusiast in that it’s not very smoky, but also not candied-sweet. Highly recommended and a great value.  JR
