Sensational Values from Southwest France: Chateau La Colombiere and Domaine des Costes!

Share

It gives us great pleasure to import "real" artisanal wines that we can offer to our customers at everyday, affordable prices. The two estates we are featuring today are small family-owned domains in the southwest of France that are certified organic and vinify naturally with wild yeasts. These are vignerons whose hard work and commitment to healthy soils and honest wines is particularly impressive, given the low prices in their regions. For three years now we've been importing the delicious wines from Philippe and Diane Cauvin at Chateau La Colombiere in AOC Fronton, north of Toulouse. This young couple is doing great work, beginning with organic and biodynamic methods in the vineyard (certified organic by Ecocert), wild-yeast fermentations, minimal sulfur and no over-extraction. They produce supple, delicious wines with lovely aromas and round, distinctive fruit. The wines are based on the Negrette grape, grown on gravel and clay terraces above the Tarn river, with added Cabernet, Gamay, and Syrah. Their Vin Gris, a direct-press rosé of Negrette and Gamay, is especially wonderful with delicate citrus and berry aromas and a refreshing, mineral palate. New to Chambers Street are the wines of Domaine des Costes in Pecharmant. (Known for the best wines of the Dordogne region, Pecharmant is north of Bergerac on south-facing slopes on a unique terroir called "tran" of gravel over iron-rich clay and limestone.) Winemaker/oenologist Jean-Marc Dournel began conversion to organic agriculture in 2003 and the estate is now certified organic and using biodynamic methods. The reds, from equal parts Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, are aromatically complex and have lovely, earthy fruit and firm tannins. The rosé (AOC Bergerac from 100% Cabernet Franc)  is delicious - subtle berry fruit with refreshing acidity - really a great value.
We urge you to try the fine and affordable wines from these two exemplary estates!

Colombière 2012 Fronton Vin Gris

The 2011 Colombière Vin Gris is drinking beautifully — an elegant light-bodied rosé, made from 80% Negrette and 20% Gamay in the AOC Fronton, north of Toulouse. Proprietors Philippe and Diane Cauvin have organic certification (Ecocert) and have been practicing biodynamic since 2006. Lovely light peach and strawberry aromas with a hint of spice on the palate. Very crisp and well-balanced, a real rose of terroir, from low yielding vines on gravel/silica soils. Wild yeast fermentation, no chaptalization or acidification, and low sulfur, kept on the lies until bottling. A deliciouly dry and subtle rosé that will accompany a wide variety of cuisines. Imported by CSW, this is a great value!

This is a lovely everyday red from a young couple practicing organic and biodynamic agriculture on their small estate near Toulouse. Vinum is 100% Negrette from 25 year-old vines on clay and sandy soils, made with minimal intervention, including fermentation with only wild yeasts. The wine is light and refreshing with pretty, slightly spicy plum and blackberry fruit. Light-bodied and with good acidity, it's the perfect red for any light cuisine and mountain cheeses.

Colombière 2010 Fronton Réserve

The lovely 2009 Reserve is a blend of 80% Negrette and 20% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from 30 year-old vines. This is quite round and lush in 2009, but not at all heavy and with good acidity to balance. Blackberry fruit with hints of pepper and licorice on the palate — really a lovely wine that should be served cool and will accompany chicken, light meats, grilled pork, etc. A great value!

Costes (Domaine des) 2012 Bergerac Rosé

This lovely rosé of Cabernet Franc is a fabulous value! Certified organic, hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts, deep strawberry and raspberry fruit aromas, clean refreshing palate, full but well-balanced — not bad for $10.99! (OK, we don't like the modern label.) I don't know of any other rosé at this price that's made with such high-quality work. This will accompany tuna, chicken and grilled meats all summer and fall....

Costes (Domaine des) 2007 Pécharment Cuvée Domaine

From old vines of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cab Sauv on a hillside vineyard in Pecharmant, near Bergerac. Very complex aromas with earthy strawberry and raspberry fruit, hints of tobacco and spice. Quite earthy, showing the limestone sub-soil, this will accompany roast chicken, grilled meats and stews and will benefit from decanting or a  few years of aging. A serious naturally-made wine from organically tended vines, bravo to the Dournel family for their great work!
