Stephane Guion

Stephane Guion Bourgueil Cuvée des Deux Monts 2009!

Stephane Guion is a quiet, somewhat reserved young man, almost entirely uninvolved in the normal promotion and marketing of the wine world. His father converted the estate to organic agriculture back in the 1960's and the estate's wines were usually sold locally and to organic markets in France. We were lucky enough to taste his wines five years ago and have proudly become his biggest customer.  Although his wines are now regularly praised in the French press, Stephane has maintained his low prices, seeking to keep the wines affordable to all. The winemaking is traditional and natural - hand harvesting, wild yeasts, low use of sulfur, no additives, aging in cement cuves and old barrels. Three wines have been produced: a delicious, sometimes demi-sec rosé (tiny quantities); the Cuvée Domaine, from young vines (10 to 40 years old); and the Cuvée Prestige from 40 to 80 year-old vines. They are now joined by a new wine, the Cuvée des Deux Monts.  From a  selection of old vines in the vineyards "Grand Mont" and "Petit Mont," it's a beautifully elegant wine that's built to last. Perhaps it's hard to justify cellaring wines that are so inexpensive, but having tasted many old vintages of the Cuvèe Prestige, I can assure you that it's worthwhile. These are wines of great character that beautifully express the limestone/clay terroirs of Bourgueil - we thank Stephane for his superb work, and for his reasonable prices! 240 bottles of the Cuvée des Deux Monts are available, only at Chambers Street.
