Alice and Olivier De Moor: Nice People, Great Wine!

Share

We first met Alice and Olivier De Moor about 10 years ago, and were immediately struck by their shy and quiet but strong and focused personalities. The wines were fascinating and somewhat irregular and sometimes oxidative or oaky, although there was not a new barrel in sight. There was always high acidity, purity and length with an almost breathtaking stony character. Not your usual machine harvested, yeasted, modern Chablis. (In general, the wines are fermented and aged in old wood barrels, without sulfur, which is added in minimal quantities only at bottling. No fining, filtration or cold-stabilization, certified organic farming) The Chablis Rosette was great in 1999 and 2000, everything was good in 2002 and in 2005 they really seemed to hit their stride, producing a range of uniformly superb, complex and wonderfully unique wines. Last January I had the good fortune to taste 2010s from Eric and Christine Nicolas at Domaine Belliviere followed by the 2010s from the De Moors -  two of the most interesting white wine producers in the world. What a great experience this was - 2010 may be the best vintage ever at both these estates. Fortunately for the De Moors, who faced the daunting financial task of starting from scratch and working organically in Chablis, their wines are now in great demand by lovers of natural wines around the world. Unfortunately, the quantities available to us are tiny. While we urge you to try these amazing wines, we may need to adjust quantities on any order over 3 bottles of each wine. De Moor 2008 Bourgogne Aligote Plantation 1902

A unique and wonderful wine. 95% aligoté, 5% chardonnay from vines in St Bris planted in 1902! Fermented and aged in old oak. An aligoté to age, this is extremely tight and high in stony acidity with citrus fruits and herbal aromas, very dense and long. A great food wine with a complex fish preparation, perhaps halibut or striped bass. Fantastic, 3 bottle max please.

De Moor 2010 Sauvignon de Saint-Bris

From one-half hectare of 65 year-old vines with some massale-selection replacements. Bearing some relation to Sancerre on the Kimmeridgian soils of Chavignol, this has bright herbal, grass and citrus aromas with hints of white pepper. The acidity on the palate is tingly and complex, bone dry and chalky with terrific length. A superb and fascinating Sauvignon Blanc, 3-bottle limit, please.

De Moor 2010 Bourgogne Chitry

From 17 year-old vines on Kimmeridgian limestone and clay in Chitry-le-fort. Fermented and aged in old oak barrels. Bright melon, herbal and citrus and exotic fruit aromas, lean high-acidity palate. This is especially tangy and bright in 2010. The acids on the palate give a wonderful impression of mineral and stony flavors. Serve with shellfish, fish or chicken with cream and mushrooms....

De Moor, Alice et Olivier 2010 Chablis Bel Air et Clardy

From 15 year-old vines on stony limestone in Courgis (see photo) A great Chablis — the De Moors are now in a category by themselves as their vinification and vineyard work gives their wines a dimension of minerality and expression that is rare in Chablis. A vintage with good ripeness and great acidity gives this wine complex fruit and terrific length. The thin soil at Bel Air et Clardy accentuates the calcaire flavors. Less aromatic than the 2009, the 2010 has amazing density — a core of stony fruit that will take some years to open. A brilliant wine, 3 bottle max, please.

De Moor, Alice et Olivier 2010 Chablis Rosette

From a steep hillside vineyard in Courgis on Portlandian and Kimmeridgian limestone with clay. This is fabulous wine in 2010, with a dense palate of glycerin, acid and mineral flavors, white-fruit liqueur and hints of spice. Terrific length and acidity, this should develop beautifully for 10 to 15 years. 3-bottle max, please.
