1884 Maximin Grünhaüser: Not yet ready for sale

Mature Riesling

Share

I just got back from a whirlwind tour of Germany's most beloved wine regions and, through the largesse of many kind growers, I was reminded of the unique and special place that mature Riesling holds in the world of wine. I couldn't have been more excited upon my return to New York to find that we had fortunately acquired one of the most stunning parcels of older wine that we've come across in some time. All the wines have been stored professionally since release; although on a few bottles there are some signs of old seepage, which is to be expected with sweet Riesling. The fill levels are almost uniformly high and the color looks great on all the wines.

Some of the wines were purchased at VDP auctions in the mid-80s and are releases you won't find anywhere else. While these are not inexpensive, the pricing is about as sharp as you'll ever see and these special wines are incredibly difficult to find, especially with such impeccable provenance. Highlights include a wealth of options from the heyday of Langwerth Von Simmern and a few choice bottles from one of my personal favorites: the Von Schubert family's Maximin Grünhaus estate (Carl von Schubert was kind enough to open Eiswein from 2009 and 2010 during my visit. These are sure to be immortal wines). Please let us know as soon as possible if anything looks good as these are likely to move fast. -jfr

Christoffel-Berres 1971 Mosel Erdener Prälat Beerenauslese 700ml

A rare wine from the now defunct Elizabeth Christoffel-Berres estate.  Lovely burnished old gold color, remarkable for its age, a bouquet like orange/kumquat marmalade, saline with perfect acidity and lots of length — a finish that seems to last forever.  This wine is just about perfect.  It has been stored in optimal condition since purchase in the mid 1980's.  If you have ever wanted to taste perfection in sweet riesling, this is your chance.

Weil 1995 Rheingau Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese

AP #23. The wines are showing signs of seepage, but these are clearly from overfilling, as the fill level goes deep into the capsule in every bottle.
