Value Summer Whites Extravaganza!

Share

It’s a well-known fact amongst wine professionals that truly interesting and character-full white wine at a good price is hard to come by (aside from our long-time love: Muscadet). Of course the market is jam-packed with acceptable whites in a variety of styles from crisp to oaky to sweet; they line the shelves and flood the fridges of your average wine store. But, we at Chambers Street, with our insistence on small production, chemical-free farming, reasonable sulfur levels, and native yeast fermentations, look for more from our well-priced white wines. Our buying ethos is straight-forward: we buy what we want to drink. If it doesn’t have a place on our tables at home, it doesn’t have a place on the shelf at CSW. We’re constantly tasting, researching, and wading through samples to bring you top quality and delicious white wines at good prices. The weather seems to have turned permanently summery and these first scorching days of the season have inspired us to put together a mixed case of white wine from around the winemaking word – offered at a larger discount than the standard 10% - to inspire you to taste our selections, branch out from the standard Sauvignon or Chardonnay, and find something new to quench your thirst this summer. You’ll find many countries represented, from Austria to Portugal to the USA, as well as an array of grape varieties ranging from classic to esoteric. In addition to this superb mixed case, please find a list below of our favorite well-priced whites for the summer of 2012. Salut! -Sophie

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2010 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Hermine d'Or

A great Muscadet by Jo Landron coming from an organic vineyard on clay and sand over a sub-soil of gneiss, rich in iron and quartz and quite high in acidity. Kept on the lees for 12 months. Lime-flower, bitter melon and sea-air aromas, hints of licorice and citrus on the palate with bracing acids. Quite dense and long with an enormously rich expression of mineral salts in the finish. This will drink well young, with fish and shellfish but will benefit from 5 to 10 years of aging, when it will accompany richer dishes. Did we say that the price is ridiculously, even embarrassingly low, as Landron's great work deserves a much higher price...

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) 2011 Vin de France P'tites Vignes (Sauv. Blanc)

A refreshing and delicious "wine of nature" by Christophe Foucher, bottled by hand without filtration or sulfites, organic farming. Slightly cloudy pale gold with floral, citrus, nettle and white fruit aromas. Herbal citrus and earthy flavors on the palate, with tingly, juicy acids in the finish. Devolps nicely with aeration and a few days, re-corked, in the fridge. A complex and intriguing Sauvignon that will accompany pates, shellfish, goat cheeses and much more,  and goes down very easy on it's own. Fabulous value, too!

Matrot, Thierry et Pascale 2011 Bourgogne Chardonnay

Certainly among the best values in White Burgundy, Thierry and Pascale Matrot make this lovely wine from certified organic grapes grown in a parcel adjacent to Meursault. There is a long fermentation in barrel with wild yeasts followed by 11 months sur lie élevage. This is a crowd-pleasing Burgundy at a great price and highly recommended!

Haut Lavigne 2010 Cotes de Duras Blanc

This fresh yet full-textured white wine from the Cotes de Duras in south western France is a perfect choice for summer. Certified organic as of 2010, the wine is a blend of equal parts Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Peachy and fresh, the wine offers lots of complexity for the price and is a fabulous match for sauteed flounder and roast fennel. -msb

Benito Santos 2011 Rias Baixas Albarino Saiar

Saiar is a certified organic vineyard of Albarino grown on granite. Fermented with wild yeasts in tank, this vintage shines with mouth-watering aromas of meyer lemon, lime zest, orange blossom, and jasmine tea. Sea spray, lime-ade, bitter melon, and white flowers abound on the refreshingly acidic and mineral palate. Easily one of our most popular and enduring white values! AR

Laguerre 2011 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Blanc

The wines of Eric Laguerre: red, white, and rosé alike, have been a delightful new surprise for us here at  Chambers Street. From high altitude vineyards in the Roussillon, this blend of 80% Grenache Blanc and 20% Marsanne, shows Mediterranean character as well as the conscientious organic farming of the Laguerre family. The wine begins crisp and full of orchard fruit notes on day one (think apricots and pears), and becomes mellow, more mineral driven and waxy with notes of pine nuts on day two. The wine sees eight months of aging in barrel and shows some fullness from oak, but with no oaky flavor, and certainly no sacrifice of freshness. The finish, which is quite long, speaks of organic farming and low yields (22 hectoliters/hectare!) Undoubtedly there are numerous food applications for this wine; it's also pretty darn delicious to have a glass of on its own. -msb

Mouraz, Casa de 2010 Vinho Verde Biotite

From the lovely couple at Casa de Mouraz, Biotite is certified organic, fermented with wild yeasts, and absolutely delicious.  Low alcohol and bottled with a slight spritz, it is crisp and highly refreshing stuff with perfect concentration to the slightly peachy, lime peel, herb, and petrol flavors.  Just a fantastic Vinho Verde with real character! cb

Copain 2009 Mendocino County Viognier Tous Ensemble

Wells Guthrie is hands down making the best Viognier for the money in California. It is perfectly balanced between acidity and aromatics with none of that cloying character that gives this style of wine a bad name. cb

Falkenstein, Hofgut 2010 Saar Krettnacher Altenberg Ries Spät Trocken

The Spätlese Trocken from Altenberg is both essentially Weber's entry-level wine but also his signature bottling. It's certainly the wine of his stable that tastes the least like one's common perceptions of Mosel Riesling. The soil is composed of classic blue-gray slate, and the intense mineral tones in the wine are a rock-lover's dream. Aromatically it's minty, steely, herbal and has a distinct note of sea-spray. The wine actually reminds me more of a great Muscadet or a low-alcohol Fino Sherry than typical Saar. Wonderfully unique and compelling wine. AP #7 -jfr

Stein 2010 Mosel Blauscheifer Riesling Trocken

Stein's Blauschiefer is our first 2010 from Mosel Wine Merchant to hit the shelves, and believe me, it's a harbinger of great things to come. Lots of text has been wasted and hands have been wrung trying to make sense of the vintage but all you need to do is try a bottle of this and see for yourself what one of our favorite winemakers was able to accomplish. Expertly balanced, lean in texture and quite dry, though not in an austere way. There's plenty of nervy citrus notes to give the wine charm and, of course, it's all wrapped in signature "Stein-Wein" minerality. -jfr

Wimmer-Czerny 2011 Wagram Grüner Veltliner Fumberg

Wimmer-Czerny grows biodynamic grapes on 15 hectares of deep loess soils in Austria's unique Wagram region, immediately to the east of Vienna. This is less intense and saline than the estate's riveting 2010, but it remains long, mineral, very refreshing and one of the best entry-level GVs. -jfr

Christ 2011 Wien Gemischter Satz

Gemischter Satz is back! The classic white blend of all the best wine taverns (heurigen) in Vienna is here and ready for spring and summer enjoyment. Christ's is an "everything but the kitchen sink" blend including classics like Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Weissburgunder but also the less expected Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc and even Chardonnay. The wine is pure refreshment with mild aromas of both pale melon and a hint of celery seed. Crisp and zippy on the palate, this tastes like pure sun with light flavors of citrus, peach and pear. Rainer Christ harvests the grapes "en masse" and co-ferments all the varieties in stainless steel to create and perfect summer white that will blow away any pinot grigio. -jfr

Contra Soarda 2011 Breganze Vespaiolo Soarda Bianco

This is dry Vespaiola, but the grape also makes very fine sweet wines. Fresh cut green apple predominates on the nose, and in the mouth it’s equally bright; when your palate adjusts the wine shows a more lush texture while remaining very refreshing, all making for a very intriguing balance. With no heat from alcohol this is really a lovely drink. JW

Valdibella 2011 Cattarratto Sicilia Munir

This is showing really well, with nice concentration but no heat β€” lime and lime blossom and herbs on the nose, bright and savory and crisp on the palette with lovely rich texture. If you think about Sicilian food β€” lots of fish, beautiful vegetables, a frequent mix of sweet and sour, liberal additions of capers β€” you are right on track for great matches for this wine.
