Clos du Vignes du Maynes: New Arrivals Featuring 2011 Cuvée 910!

Share

Chambers Street Wines is proud to represent this great estate, whose vineyards have been in production since their original plantation by the monks of Cluny in 910 AD. The estate's vines have never been treated with modern herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilzers as Pierre Guillot began organic agriculture immediately upon purchasing the property in 1954. The estate's 7 hectares are oriented due East, on limestone with very shallow clay soils and have been certified Biodynamic since 1998. Pierre's grandson, Julien Guillot, is now in charge. Energetic, intelligent and possesed of a great sense of humor, Julien is doing great work in the vineyard and in the cellar, producing subtle, precise and profound wines from Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir. Vinifications for the reds are semi-carbonic, without SO2. Whites are pressed slowly, in a wooden press from 1895, aging is sur-lie in old barrels. Both whites and reds are bottled without, or with minimal SO2, depending on the vintage. We're particularly happy to offer the 2011 vintage of Julien's unique and delicious Cuvée 910, a field-blend of the three varieties made exactly as wines were made 1100 years ago by the Abbey of Cluny. Hand-harvesting, transport by ox-cart, foot pressing, no additives - pure juice, pure enjoyment! The living soils at Vignes du Maynes, with Julien Guillot's careful work, produce wines with superb acidity, balance and purity of fruit that are among the most intesting wines in Burgundy today - we urge you to try them.

Vignes du Maynes 2010 Macon-Cruzille Manganite

From massale selection Gamay vines planted in 1952-53 in the estate vineyards which have been organically farmed since 900 AD! Nine-day true carbonic followed by alcoholic fermentation in old vats. This is certainly one of the most beautiful Gamay wines produced anywhere. The 2010 is a bit lighter than the 2009, with black fruits, damp earth, cherry, floral and brown spice aromas. The palate is a complex melange of blackberry, beach-plum, citrus, brown spice and earth with a very long finish of minerally acids. This fascinating and complex wine should be decanted for current drinking and enjoyed over a few days. It should age nicely for 10 to 15 years.

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Macon-Cruzille Blanc

Subtle, complex aromas of lemon/lime, apple, honeysuckle and stone. The palate has refreshing chalky acidity with white fruits and citrus flavors that continue nicely in the finish. This benefits from aeration or decanting — a versatile, elegant white Burgundy that will accompany everything from sole to lobster to chicken.

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Macon-Cruzille Aragonite

Julien Guillot's Aragonite is a great bottle of white burgundy. The aromas are very subtle and expressive of the wines firm acidity. Citrus peel and stony flavors on the palate with crystalline acids and hints of white fruits. Left alone for a few days the wine softens, with exotic fruit flavors emerging but still subtle and balanced. Think of a drier and more mineral version of Thevenet's superb Bongran. Decant for best current drinking or keep open, re-corked, for a few days.

Guillot 2011 Mâcon Rouge

Julien Guillot of Vignes du Maynes makes this lovely Gamay from organic grapes grown by a friend, on the "premiere cote" of the Macon. The blackberry, red currant and cherry aromas are subtle and earthy, on the palate there is good acidity and a real sense of the soil with elegant dark fruit. Good acidity and tannin for this relatively soft vintage. This is a very interesting Gamay that will improve with decanting or some time open — or a few years in the cellar.

Vignes du Maynes 2010 Bourgogne Cuvèe Auguste

A light and aromatic Pinot Noir, made from old vines of the small-berried "pinot fin" variety. Extremely floral with blackberry and high-toned red fruits. Dark and earthy, light on the palate but with intense fruit expression at the same time. The finish is very long, this should age beautifully. This is a truly unique and delicious wine, 60 bottles available.

Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) 2010 Bourgogne Ste. Genevieve Brut Rose

Made from a selection of 40 to 50 year-old Pinot Noir and Gamay vines from the Domaine, which have been in organic agriculture since 1954. This is a very intriguing, extremely dry rosé, with hints of red currant, cranberry and citrus. Peach skin, red fruits and earthy flavors on the palate, with a very refreshing mineral finish. A subtle and fascinating sparkling wine that is a real wine of terroir and a great value. -DL

Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) 2010 Bourgogne Extra-Brut Ste. Genevieve

A lovely extra-dry Cremant. Subtle pear, apple and citrus aromas with earth and briary notes. The palate is mineral with earthy flavors, a bit of honeysuckle and spice with good acidity and length. Not a casual petillant but a great accompaniment to goat cheese, shellfish, or some serious tapas... No added sulfites.

Vignes du Maynes 2002 Crémant de Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Ex Brut

Nine years on the lees! We are surprised and delighted at how Champagne-like this wine is, while retaining rich, generous, earthy Mâcon character. On the nose it shows umami notes: oyster mushroom, and a toasty, very lightly oxidative nuttiness. The palate is quite round and supple and the wine has clearly fleshed out and broadened with time the way that long lees-aged Champagnes do. The bubbles are lively and present. Given the prices of 2002 vintage Champagnes, we'd say this is a superb value! -msb
