Older Burgundy, And More (What's for Dinner?)

Share

We are happy to have received purchases made from two fine private cellars, with lots of sensibly priced wine, including some older Burgundy, which is increasingly hard to come by. As always, we guarantee the condition of each bottle.

Jayer-Gilles 1999 Cote de Nuits Villages

Especially considering the price/quality rapport, this turns out to be a stellar bottle of wine. It's probably at its peak right now, with considerable depth, and the typical Cotes-de-Nuits-Villages rusticity has become much more elegant. Too often we drink this kind of wine too young — relatively speaking it's not expensive, so it's easier to consume than a 1er Cru — but this proves that it can be really worth cellaring some less 'important' wine.

Juillot, Michel 1996 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults

Nice ruby red color starting to turn brick red.  This mature Red Burgundy is robust, full flavored with lots of minerality and tangy flavors and tannin.  It is a rustic wine with "barnyard" aromas and a long aftertaste.  The kind of Burgundy that can stand up to very rich foods. JBT

Juillot, Michel 1999 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults

Bright ruby red color.  Great sweet pinot fruit on the nose, good ripe tannins, full flavored with a long finish.  Would be great with steak or lamb chops or rich cow's milk cheeses. JBT

Mugneret-Gibourg 1995 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Chaignots

Deep, garnet red with spicy aromatics, this is a full bodied rich and tannic red Burgundy that could stand up to a steak or lamb chops.  Sometimes Chaignots can be a very Vosne, but this is very Nuits in style: brambly, rustic, and revealing of rose petals on the nose and palate after an hour or so open. A full throttle bottle of Pinot Noir and a great example of how powerful Burgundy can be. A tour de force! -jbt

Naddef, Philippe 2000 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux

This mature 2000 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Champeaux is perfectly ready to drink for dinner tonight or over the next few years.  It has lovely Pinot Noir red and black cherry fruit and violet aromatics and good acidity with just a bit of tannin.  A very nice wine and a very good value.

La Mission Haut Brion 1981 Pessac-Leognan

The original owner (a NY'er who is a Bordeaux fanatic) has now sold us over 8 cases of this wine and we keep buying it because it's so damn good. 1981 produced some excellent wines, and this is one, from the same team and family as Haut Brion; La Mission is often just as good. Absolutely classic Graves; very fragrant with cedar, stone, black-currant, tobacco, it's a wine with great finesse and elegance, beautifully balanced. We wish that every Napa wine maker was required to taste this before they make their fruit bombs! It's true that it's not cheap, but for properly cellared mature Bordeaux of top quality we think it's worth it. JW

Leoville Las Cases 1978 St Julien

We tasted this two years ago and loved it – a really classic Claret. It was satisfyingly complete and contemplative, a wine to savor with leg of lamb or roast beef – a very old fashioned, Anglo kind of Xmas-y wine.

Leoville Las Cases 1983 St Julien

This is the greatest chateau in Saint Julien, it is located right next to Chateau Latour.  There is a little creek that runs between the two properties, one side is in Saint Julien and the other side is Pauillac.  This is a very rich mature bottle of Bordeaux and it is drinking great now.  It is made from approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.  A great 1983 and a great Leoville las Cases.

Petit Village 1983 Pomerol

From the edge of the plateau of Pomerol, on gravel soils with a some clay and sand, Chateau Petit Village is neighbor to La Conseillante and Vieux Chateau Certan. The wines from before the acquisition of the the Chateau by AXA are a snapshot of classic Pomerol-richness married with moderate structure. The 1983 is cut from this cloth. With a brief decanting, the nose is is floral with a faint spiciness and earthy undertones. There are hints of smokiness and cigar box as it evolves in the glass. There is a ample softness and attractive fruitiness paired with a meatiness on the palate and fully integrated oak. Nicely evolved right now. A pleasure to drink. This is old school Pomerol! JCM
