Taste With Pierre Breton, Friday Sept. 14th, 5 till 7:00pm!

Share

Please join us this Friday to taste the great 2010 Bourgueils of Pierre and Catherine Breton.  The Bretons have been leaders of the organic and natural wine movement for many years and have inspired young vignerons in the Loire and throughout France. This is an oustanding line-up of wines, certainly a great vintage for the Bretons, with gorgeously elegant fruit, fabulous earthy acidity and firm but light tannins. Of particular interest is the Bourgueil "Les Nuits D'Ivresse" a cuvée from old vines in the vineyards of Grand Mont and Busardieres with limestone/clay soils. Vinified without any use of sulfur-dioxide, the wine has exuberant, complex fruit and fabulous balance. It is delicious now but will cellar beautifully, as shown by a recently opened 2005 which was sensational. Don't miss this opportunity to taste and chat (yes, his English is pretty good) with one of the great winemakers of the Loire Valley!

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Trinch

From 15 to 30 year-old vines on gravel soils on the lower slopes of Bourgueil comes the ripe and cheerful Trinch! (The sound of glasses clinking). A short maceration with minimal extraction gives this luscious, soft wine with deep plummy, berry fruit meant to be enjoyed young and well-chilled with charcuterie, roast chicken and light meals. It's dark and delicious with zingy balancing acidity — get some before it disappears....

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Les Galichets

This is a great vintage for the Breton's Bourgueil les Galichets! As with the Baudry's Chinon Les Grezeaux, the normally softer fruit of the gravel over limestone terroir is buoyed by bright acidity giving the wine particularly complex and subtle aromas. On the palate there is superb red and black fruit with hints of truffle and spice, balanced by light tannins. The wine is long and deep but with lovely lightness and length. Five years from now this will be superb, if you can wait. (50 year-old vines, aged in 5,000 liter oak barrels)

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Franc de Pied

From relatively young un-grafted vines on sandy clay over limestone. As in the Baudry Chinon Franc de Pied, the alcohol is a bit lower but the wine has beautiful intensity of black and red fruits with bracing acidity. There is an elegant saline character on the palate and a long refreshing finish — lovely wine that will drink well now but will improve with a few years in bottle. A rare and unique wine!

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Chinon Beaumont

The Breton's Chinon Beaumont is from old vines on  limestone parcels in the commune of Saint-Louans, home of some of the greatest terroirs of Chinon. Possessing the earthy and mineral qualities of clay/limestone Chinon, this wine is more structured than usual and will benefit from 5 to 8 years of aging. The palate is dense but lean with beautifully integrated ripe fruit and and stimulating acidity. This is the best Beaumont the Bretons have made and would happily satisfy the thirst of Gargantua! Highly recommended.

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Nuits D'Ivresse

From old vines on the upper slopes of Bourgueil, where the clay over Turonien chalk gives magnificent long-lasting wines. Vinified with zero sulfur-dioxide, the 2010 Nuits D'Ivresse has deep aromas of strawberry confit, earth and spice. The palate is round but balanced and fresh. Buy a case and drink half now, wait 5 to 8 years for the rest. Highly recommended!

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Vouvray La Dilettante

Catherine Breton's family have been winemakers in Vouvray for generations. The 2010 Dilettante is a lovely dry Vouvray with subtle aromas of white fruits, citrus and honeysuckle. The palate is fresh with round fruit and chalky acids. This is a very pretty and refreshing Vouvray that will accompany any seafood and lighter poultry dishes and is a lovely apéritif as well.
