Nothing gives us greater pleasure than touting the merits of wines made using controlled oxidation. And what better time to do so than the week of the release of Peter Liem’s much-anticipated book: Sherry, Manzanilla and Montilla: A Guide to the Traditional Wines of Andalucia, when all the world is talking about Sherry? For those who have not heard, the third week of October will see a citywide celebration of the wines of Jerez. During this week, there will be more Sherry poured and more Sherry producers in town than ever before in New York. Please click Sherryfest for more information. We hope to do our part to bring the unique and incredibly food-versatile wines of Jerez to you by offering a tapas party and fish fry on October 23rd with winemakers in attendance, as well as an outstanding in-store tasting on October 20th.

Our friend André Tamers of De Maison Selections has one of the best Sherry portfolios around; it’s a portfolio that is representative of a breadth of Sherry styles from the briny, tangy Manzanillas of La Cigarrera to the sweet, aromatic Moscatels of Cesar Florido. This dinner at El Quinto Pino will feature eight Sherries, as well as winemakers from four of André’s sherry bodegas: La Cigarrera, El Maestro Sierra, Gutierrez Colosia, and Cesar Florido. For those unfamiliar, El Quinto Pino is a tapas bar that specializes in regional Spanish cuisine. The dinner commences at  8:30pm on October 23rd and El Quinta Pino will be offering a fish fry style menu, absolutely perfect for the salty,  sea influenced Sherries of Sanlucar de Barrameda and Jerez de la Frontera. This will be a wonderful and delicious opportunity both to eat and drink, and to meet producers. It’s going to be a super party; we’ll see you enthusiastic Sherry lovers there. Below you’ll find the featured wines listed and If you have further questions about the menu or the Sherries, we’d love to answer them: office@chambersstwines.com

In addition to the fish fry at El Quinto Pino, on Saturday, 10/20, from 4-7pm, we’ll be pouring Sherry at Chambers Street. We’ll show a couple of Sherries from De Maison Selections, but also wines from Hidlago E Marquez, Valdespino, and La Bota. Salud! -Sophie

La Cigarrera NV San Lucar de Barrameda Manzanilla 375ml

A beautiful small bodega/almacenista and tavern in the barrio bajo section of San Lucar de Barrameda. This solera has 8 criaderas which results in a wine with a real edge to its very saline and crunchy herbal flavors. A favorite at the shop and an astounding pairing with boquerones. cb

La Cigarrera NV San Lucar de Barrameda Manzanilla Pasada 375 ml

We all love the delicious and refreshing La Cigarrera Manzanilla, but this Pasada is a huge step up in complexity and texture. Pasada refers to the fact that wine continues to age after the flor has started to dissipate; the wines in this particular bottle average over 20 years of age.The result is a Sherry that drinks somewhere between a Fino and Amontillado in style, and has the concentration and salinity turned up several levels from your average Manzanilla. Think deep, nutty, flor notes with a touch of oxidative roundness creeping in.  JR

Cesar Florido NV Chipiona Fino 375ml

Grower sherry! One of two producers in the town of Chipiona (close to Sanlucar) who does not belong to the cooperative, Cesar Florido makes such delicious Fino Sherry that marries the generous (okay -- relatively generous -- it's Sherry, afterall) fruit of a fruitier Fino such as Gutierrez Colosia's Elcano with the smoky, flor-y salinity of a more rustic Fino such as Valdespino's Innocente. A new favorite, this is the perfect choice for your Fino needs: green olives, Spanish sheep's milk cheese, etc... -msb

Gutiérrez Colosia NV El Puerto de Santa María Juan Sebastian Elcano 375ml

The most recent bottling tasted is the epitome of delicacy. Lovely Meyer lemon fruit with subtle petrol tones entangled in a bright salinity. cb

Gutiérrez Colosia NV El Puerto de Santa María Sangre y Trabajadero Oloroso

This former Almacenista turned shipper serves up this complex, layered, dry Oloroso exhibiting raspberry, candied orange citrus, dried plums, and toasted hazelnuts, all finishing incredibly salty and persistent, leaving nothing more for my heart to desire from this style of wine. cb

El Maestro Sierra NV Jerez Fino 375ml

A very intense and full-bodied Fino, somewhat atypical for Jerez Finos that are usually light, lemony and round on the palate. There are more Criaderas in El Maestro's Solera which explains the intensity (longer aging) and the powerfully, concentrated smoky style, which a friend of mine called the Selosse of Jerez. Top tier and highly recommended. cb

El Maestro Sierra 12 year old Amontillado 375ml

El Maestro's Amontillado is a refined example of the style with delicate sweet walnut tones from oxidative aging and saline hints from biological aging under flor. The palate is broad, smooth, and balanced showing the kind of elegance rarely associated with this class of Jerez. For me, this is the style of Jerez that epitomizes this Bodega. cb
