Share

Muscadet lovers rejoice - we've received a small shipment of the lovely 2005 L d'Or from Luneau-Papin, a great vintage for this long-lasting Muscadet. While similar to the 2009 in it's ripe aromatics and round palate, there is good acidity balancing the fruit and a nice kick of bitter minerals in the finish. Drink now with great pleasure of hold, well, as long as you want. The Louis/Dressner French Department has brought us a wide variety of fascinating new arrivals from Thierry Puzelat, Domaine Belliviere, Claude Marechal, Bernard Baudry, Clos Roche Blanche and many more, so please take a moment to peruse this worthy collection of wines, many of which are in very limited supply.

Clos Roche Blanche 2011 Touraine Pif

Super-Bon! A nice vintage for PIF, faithful mouse-hunter and vineyard companion at Clos Roche Blanche. A blend of Cot, Cab Franc and Pineau d'Aunis, it has pretty red and black fruit aromas, and a lovely medium-bodied palate with good acidity and length. Refreshing and thirst-quenching at 12 degrees alcohol, jut the way we like it. Don't delay, quantity is limited. DL

Baudry 2011 Chinon Franc de Pied

The Baudry's small plot of un-grafted vines on the lower part of the Clos Guillot is still alive and producing, and in 2011 the results are fabulous! Generally speaking the 2011 Chinons are forward, pleasing wines but with a bit less grip and minerality than the superb 2010s. In this case, however, the vintage seems to suit the young franc de pied vines and the wine is superb. The color is a deep red/black with complex floral black fruit aromas. The palate is fresh with bright blackberry/red currant fruit. It's zippy and long and all together delightful! A very small quantity is availabe, please 3 bottle maximum.

Luneau-Papin Delete 2005 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le "L" d'Or

Another great effort from the Luneau-Papin family, and not much stock remains of this excellent vintage. Tasted in November 2015. When opened the aromas are subtle with lime-flower, lemon oil, earth, mushroom and herbal notes. With aeration the aromas gain depth and the crystalline palate shows it's density with dried fruits, mushroom, stone, anise and citrus. Fresh pear, earth and minerals linger in the long finish. This is beginning to sing at ten years of age, drink now or until 2030. Decant or open one hour before serving.

Luneau-Papin 2010 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine V.V. Pierres Blanches Hermine d'Or

Les Pierres Blanches is an excellent hillside vineyard in La Chapelle Heulin with 60-plus year-old vines on sandy gravel over schistes and mica-schistes. In 2010 it's particularly outstanding with citrus, white fruit and herbal aromas, the palate is fairly rich for a 2010, but backed with ample acidity giving mineral flavors and good length. Silky, refreshing, and quite complex with hints of anise, balanced and food-friendly. A very lovely Muscadet to drink now and over the next five years and a great value. (The Hermine D'Or label is given to special cuvees of Muscadet that are submitted to a jury of wine-makers)

Puzelat-Bonhomme 2011 Touraine Pinot Noir

Thierry Puzelat's négociant wines are always a source for delicious, thirst quenching bottles made naturally and available at fantastic prices, so it should come as no surprise that the store's favorite value in Pinot Noir bears his label.  This is 2011 Loire in all of its glory: highly drinkable with lots of cranberry and black cherry fruit and more than a little crunchy, herbal Touraine character.  The wine is wonderful now, and the chalky minerality will continue to impress as the weather cools and this year's (or next's) holiday turkeys and roasts approach.  JR

Puzelat-Bonhomme 2011 Touraine Pineau D'Aunis La Tesniere

An always a typical expression of Pineau d'Aunis, from vines adjacent to Clos Roche Blanche's on clay with silex, organic and biodynamic farming. Aged in old futs and demi-muids, bottled withouit filtration, minimal SO2. Lacking for the hallmark black pepper, but floral, beautiful dark cherry fruit and minimal-but-percepitble tannin. Slightly softer and more supple than the previous vintage; a wonderful food wine with a perfect balance of fruit and mineral acids.

Maisons Brûlées (Michel Augé) 2010 Vin de Table L'Erèbe

For many years we have enjoyed tasting and talking with Béatrice and Michel Augé—a soft-spoken and intelligent couple who farm nine hectares in Pouillé, above the Cher river in Touraine. They are certified biodynamic and use no sugar, yeasts or other additives and bottle without sulfur if the vintage allows. We're proud to have a growing number of their wines in the store. The 2010 L'Erèbe is made from Côt and Cabernet Franc and was bottled without added SO2. "The sulfur used as a preservative annihilates many of the positive effects of wine" says Michel. The wine is aromatically superb with complex black fruits with earth and spice. The palate is full and very expressive, but light in weight with crisp acidity—an invigorating and interesting experience! Highly recommended. Maisons Brûlées (Michel Augé) 2010 Vin de Table Le Herdeleau

This wine gets better every year! Michel Auge, known to friends and winemakers in the Loire as "Master Yoda," creates this cuvee from Pinot Noir, Gamay and Pineau D'Aunis. The grapes are macerated together and there is NO sulfur added. Flavors of black cherry and earth with fresh tannin and a lot of acidity. In the glass this wine is a rich dark violet, not the bright transparent hue we would expect from the blend. The herbal notes from the Pineau D'Aunis are present, but subtle and integrated. This is natural wine making at it's finest. No yeasty finish, just lots of pure terroir and complexity.   EL

Cazin 2006 Cour-Cheverny Cuvée Renaissance

2006 was a somewhat difficult vintage in Cheverny resulting in very low yields, but with good ripeness and acidity, a good formula for the late-harvest Romorantin from Cazin. Intriguing aromas of lemon, herbal and pine resin; the palate is full with yellow fruits and hay, the finish is very long with good acidity indicating another 20 years of development. A unique and beautiful wine!

Texier 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

Our friend Eric Texier continues to produce some of the finest old-school Rhône wines being made today. Eric made superb wines in 2010 and this great Chateauneuf-du-Pape shows that Grenache can be as elegant as Syrah in this lovely vintage. "2010 is a classic vintage without over-ripeness," says Eric. "Harvested the 22nd and 23rd of September on La Crau as usual. 95% Grenache at least, the rest is Mourvedre picked early to add acidity. The vines are tended by Jean Riché with traditional plowing. Whole cluster, 18 days of maceration, native yeast,  no bull**** (tannins, enzymes, grenadine...) 12 months in foudre in Chateauneuf, then 6 months in barrels in Charnay. Minimal SO2 at bottling, no fining, no filtration." Deep aromas of black cherry with violets, herbs of provence, roast meat, very pure and elegant. The palate is superbly balanced (13.5 degrees alcohol) with lovely black and red fruits. Lovely concentration but not at all heavy, with terrific length and cool, lifting acidity. Really a lovely Chateauneuf, best drinking perhaps 2017 to 2030.

Barth, Laurent 2012 Alsace Pinot D'Alsace

Laurent Barth is making superbly elegant wines on his 4.5 hectare estate in Bennwihr, and he's one of the nicest winemakers on the planet! His Pinot d'Alsace is very far from the usual over-cropped Pinot Blanc. Made with Pinot Auxerrois and Pinot Noir, it has lovely white fruit aromas with hints of red berries, and a nice full palate with good acidity and length. It's a versatile wine that's a great apéritif or accompaniment to Asian foods, full-flavored fish dishes and chicken, and a great value at $16.99!

Barth 2010 Alsace Gewurztraminer Vieilles Vignes

This is a gorgeous Gewurz, with complex aromas of tea, lemon, brown spice and flowers. The palate is silky and elegant with perfect balance of sweet and acid. From late-harvested grapes, with about 25% botrytis. "One doesn't really smell the botrytis but it makes the aromas more interesting and less typical" says Laurent.

Bain 2011 Pouilly-Fume Spring

Very good, although somewhat atypical Pouilly-Fume from the relatively inxecperience but talented Alexandre Bain. We're actually a bit surprised this got the AOC, since extended skin-contact and minimal sulfur additions give this wine a golden, slightly misty hue. The aromas are initially tightly coiled but potently mineral and really blossom with air. It's unmistakably Sauvignon Blanc but the grape's more pungent characteristics are really dialed back. Well-poised, broadly textured and one of the tastiest SBs I've tried in some time. Be sure to head over to Bertrand Celce's blog to meet Phénomène, Bain's trusty horse who is responsible for plowing almost all the vineyards. -jfr

Maréchal, Catherine et Claude 2010 Auxey-Duresses

This lovely Auxey-Duresses really stood out at out tasting with Claude and Catherine Maréchal last winter. Really pretty strawberry/cherry aromatics with earth and mineral notes. The palate was quite complex and long with great balance. We're loving the 2010 vintage in Burgundy and this nice value village wine will drink well over the next 10 years.

Maréchal, Catherine et Claude 2010 Pommard La Chaniere

A beautiful Pommard from Catherine and Claude Maréchal. La Chanière, just above the premier cru of the same name, is a south-facing slope in the valley above Les Arvelets. This showed beautifully in our tasting with Claude last winter—complex high-toned red fruit aromas, dense palate without fat, well-structured and with terrific length. This will need a few years in the cellar, peak drinking perhaps five to fifteen years from now. Highly recommended.

Maréchal, Catherine et Claude 2010 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières

This is a beautiful Savigny Premier Cru. The nose has a strong earth and mineral component. The palate is very bright, lean and youthful with firm acidity. A nice example of the 2010 vintage—very terroir-expressive!

Bellivière 2010 Jasnières Calligramme

The Belliviere Calligramme is one of the greatest white wines of France and it's particularly superb in 2010. From old vines on south-facing slopes  of clay and flint over limestone descending to the Loir. 20 months in 600 liter used barriques. Remarkably complex herbal, floral, stony white fruit aromas. Sensational balance, length and mineral acidity on the palate. This will be at it's best between 10 and 25 years of age and belongs in your cellar.

Belliviere 2010 Coteaux du Loir Eparses Vieilles Vignes (10/16

2010 is a great vintage for the superb Chenin Blancs from Eric and Christine Nicolas at Belliviere. From 50 to 80 year-old vines on limestone with flinty clay soils, with yields of 25 hl/ha. Beautiful floral, herbal white fruit aromas. The palate is ripe and complex but with terrific acidity and mineral flavors and great length, Really a great Chenin that can be enjoyed now and it will age beautifully. Not inexpensive but very much worth the price...
