Une Tranche de Philippe Jambon 2009 & 2010!

Share

Sometimes superb wines take circuitous routes in reaching Chambers Street: Our Burgundy maven John Truax got a call from his friend Russel Hone at Becky Wasserman Selections concerning a delicious Chiroubles they drank at a combination meat market/restaurant in Chablis. Only 20 cs of 2009 and 2010 were available, would we like them? The wines were made by the talented Philippe Jambon from organically tended vines on a steep hillside vineyard and beautfully labeled with a happy pig on a pink parchment scroll. (The vineyard is worked by horse or with a winch-pulled plow) Monsieur Jambon has a sense of humor and also years of experience making delicious wines without added sulfur. "Vines tended logically without herbicides or other chemical products. Total SO2 7 mg/Liter. Store in a cool place" says the label. We're glad to report that these are among the prettiest and most elegant of Beaujolais from these two excellent if quite different vintages. The 2009, at 12.5% alcohol has lovely, pure fruits but with good acidity and lift, avoiding the over-ripeness of some wines from this vintage. The 2010 is structured, subtle and elegant and needs two to three years to open - it's a superb and classic Chiroubles that should drink well for ten years or more. We're very excited to offer these two exquisite wines and hope that all of our Beaujolais lovers will try them - and thanks to the good folks at Becky Wasserman Selections for sending them our way! (Wines will arrive on Tuesday, 11/20, and will be available for pickup, delivery, or shipment thereafter.)

Gonnet (P. Jambon) 2009 Chiroubles Une Tranche

This beautiful Beaujolais was selected by Philippe Jambon — it comes from a steep plot of old vines owned by F & H Gonnet in Chiroubles, farmed organically. Vinified without added SO2 (total SO2 is 7 mg/liter), 12.5 % alcohol. Complex aromas of blackberry and cherry liqueur with floral hints, blood orange and spice. The palate is deep and round but with very good lifting acids, particularly for a 2009. Lingering dark fruits on the long finish. This is very "gouleyant" Beaujolais, supple, yummy and easy drinking but with enough structure to drink well for another 5 to 8 years. Highly recommended and only available in the US at Chambers Street. Store in a cool place.

Gonnet (P. Jambon) 2010 Chiroubles Une Tranche

This is a very elegant Chiroubles, selected by Philippe Jambon, from a steep hillside parcel owned by F & H Gonnet. Quite different from the 2009 version, here the aromas are subtle strawberry and raspberry with hints of earth and mineral. The palate is tight with elegant dark fruits and great balance — this will need a few years to open up but impresses now with its superb structure and depth. Best between 2015 and 2022? "Vines cultivated logically without herbicides or other chemical products. SO2 total 7mg/liter" Highly recommended.
