This is fun – a long list of wines (removed from temperature-controlled storage), mostly purchased bottle-by-bottle by a wine lover; this is a fine opportunity to taste some older-vintage bottles at very fair prices. As we’ve noted in the past, the rarest wines are not always the most expensive. Joguet from Charles Joguet’s last two vintages; Felsina Chianti 1988; older Breton, Closel, Druet, Pibarnon, Ecard, Juillot, Pousse d'Or – these are some rare wines!
The Baumard Sainte Catherine was lovely in '95, '96 and '97, with the 1996 having the most acidity and structure of the 3 vintages. This should be showing beautifully and is a steal at this price!
Happily the high acidity and tannins in this excellent vintage have softened and this wine is opening up, showing lovely raspberry fruit with the complex terroir and gamey notes one finds in older Loire reds. Definitely worth a try!
This is a great Clos St Jacques from Jadot's own vineyards. This is nearly "Grand Cru" in quality. It is a great 1er Cru Gevrey Chambertin from a great vintage and it is just coming around at 11 years since the vintage. Drink over the next 15-25 years. Or tonight!
