It Came in From the Cold!

Share

We've bought part of a great cellar from a collector in the Midwest, and have been waiting for a break in the frigid winter weather so that  the wine could be shipped to us. This cellar was curated over many years, and was very carefully stored. The couple love their wines and love to throw dinner parties, but they've realized that they could have a dinner party every night of the week for the rest of their lives and never, ever drink all of their wine, so they sold us some mixed lots.

They may part with some more later but we started with these. This cellar is mostly Red Burgundy with a little Bordeaux and a few from Piedmont. They have made many trips to Burgundy and Piedmont over  the years, and their cellar contains bottles of wine they first tried in Europe then bought here.

These perfectly stored rare gems are not going to last...

Lafarge, Michel 2004 Volnay

A complex nose: gamey, floral, black fruit. For a village wine this is better than many 1er crus — rich, ripe and balanced, good length — excellent. JW

Lafarge, Michel 2004 Volnay Vendanges Selectionees

The VS takes it up another level; deeper than the Volnay, with dark cherry fruit and meaty notes; great complexity and good length — a very fine wine. JW

Leoville Las Cases 1978 St Julien

We tasted this two years ago and loved it – a really classic Claret. It was satisfyingly complete and contemplative, a wine to savor with leg of lamb or roast beef – a very old fashioned, Anglo kind of Xmas-y wine.
