Daylight Savings Time!

Unless you live in a cave you've probably noticed that the sun is setting a lot later than it was last week. The birds are singing and the crocuses are blooming and soon the lilacs will be blossoming and there will be bunnies hopping and deer frolicking in the meadows...(well perhaps not in the concrete metropolis). Yes, spring is here. And we have just received a GREAT cellar that we bought in the grey and dark days of winter. Now that the snows have receded we can offer this collection of splendid back vintage wines. There are many, many great values to be had from Burgundy, Bordeaux, California, and other renowned wine producing regions of the world. Do not hesitate to call; many of these wines will sell out immediately. -jbt

Leoville Las Cases 1978 St Julien

We tasted this two years ago and loved it – a really classic Claret. It was satisfyingly complete and contemplative, a wine to savor with leg of lamb or roast beef – a very old fashioned, Anglo kind of Xmas-y wine.

Haut Bailly 1996 Graves

This is a beautiful classic Pessac Leognan. (Used to be called Graves)  It has those pipe tobacco and mineral notes on the nose and it has a very rich mid palate, good lingering finish.  A classic and very delicious and full flavored Cabernet based wine.  Really delivers.

Haut Marbuzet 1990 St Estèphe

A deep dark red, plummy and rich — very dark fruits and very complex.  An outstanding bottle of Saint Estephe, our friend and neighbor sommelier Adrien Falcon of Bouley Restaurant had this last year with the chateau owner and was very, very impressed.  A great effort from a great vintage.

Latour à Pomerol 1995 Pomerol

A powerful Pomerol.   As always, Latour a Pomerol offers up a seamless integration of blending and taste  — delicately balanced, vibrant fruit still supported by velvety tannin structure even at this mature age of its evolution. Warm, round and generous with beautiful spice notes on the nose and in the palate, this wine has that kind of glorious length on the tongue that offers untold layers of nuance and character — like one door giving way to the next in elegant succession. In short, for me, this is what we all dream our perfectly kept, properly mature Bordeaux would always offer us — a philosophical and profound taste sensation that transcends craft and emerges into the sublime. Old-fashioned Pomerol making — not over-extracted in style, deftly judged use of wood, the delicious beauty that only great great Merlot terroir can provide with that small hint of Cabernet Franc to give it the extra edge and dimension of identity — memorable, nearly ethereal at this stage of it's life. And this all spoken by a true Burgundian lover! I would put as many of these in my collection as I could afford. -JBT

Confuron-Cotetidot 1996 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Suchots

Confuron-Cotetidot owns over 2 hectares of the fantastic Vosne Romanee 1er Cru  les Suchots vineyard.  They are by far the largest landowner.  This is a great bottle of 1996 Vosne Romanee, open it an hour before dinner and enjoy it as the aromas open up and blossom. The more time you give it in the glass, the more it will reward you.  Great fruit, deep and rich flavor, moderate tannins from some whole clusters included in the fermentation.  The acidity is kept in check by the abundant fruit.  A very fine 1996!

Jadot 1998 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Boudots

This mature Nuits St Georges is from Boudots, the Nuits St Georges vineyard that borders Vosne Romane Les Malconsorts.  This Nuits St Georges has many of the dark fruit and spice aspects of Vosne Romanee.  These bottles came from a very cold cellar and it shows — the wine is very young for its 15 years of age.  A very fine bottle of Red Burgundy.

Trapet 1998 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru

Rich, full, lots of Chambertin oyster shell character to the limestone-y nose and some tannin, very good fruit — this wine came from a very cold cellar and the corks show this — there is no evidence of staining along the cork.  This is a great bottle of mature Grand Cru Burgundy from a very good but often overlooked vintage.

Rochioli 2004 Russian River Valley Estate Pinot Noir

Joe Rochioli Jr. has been growing Pinot Noir at his Riussian River Valley vineyard in Sonoma County since 1970.  He was one of the pioneers of Pinot Noir in California and sold his grapes to the greatest producers of California Pinot Noir including Burt Williams of Williams Selyem.  The vineyard is made up of a  great variety of Pinot noir cuttings and rootstocks and has continually evolved over the years offering much, much more than a vineyard planted to one clone.

This 2004 Estate Grown Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is rich and ripe with great balance and acidity.  It is a fine example of a mature American Pinot Noir with great sense of place.  It tastes like a Russian River Valley pinot should, just as much as a Morey St Denis tastes like a Morey Saint Denis.  Treat yourself to a bottle of this wonderful wine.
