Burgundy 2010s Including New Parcel of Chevillon!

Share

After tasting the full 2010 lineups in barrel at more than 20 estates, and confirming those impressions by tasting many of them in bottle, I am convinced that the vintage is one of the greats, combining the structure and terroir expression of 2008 with the power of 2009.  Sadly, yields were down 30 - 40% at most domaines, so between the critical praise for them and demand for fine Burgundy worldwide being at an all-time high, these are fast disappearing from the marketplace.  We're very happy to be able to offer great wines from some of our favorite estates, all in stock now.  With reported yields down significantly in 2011 and 2012 as well we hope you won't miss this chance to obtain some of the best wines out there today!

Billard 2010 Pommard 1er Cru Les Charmots

From eighty-plus year-old vines in this great Pommard premier cru vineyard. Showing the strength of this great vintage in Burgundy, the wine shows fabulously complex aromas of red and black fruits. The palate is dense and structured, while remaining light on its' feet and well-balanced. Very long and very elegant, this wine is built to last and represents fabulous value in this great vintage.

Bouvier, René 2010 Bourgogne Le Chapitre

Le Chapitre is a tiny vineyard in Chenove, north of Marsannay, bravely resisting the sprawl of Dijon. A well-known site in the Middle Ages, the soil here is similar to mid-slope in Marsannay and gives a lovely, earthy light-bodied Burgundy. The 2010 is a bit brighter than the 2009, with lovely red-currant and strawberry/cherry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, very elegant and dense, needs time to open. A day later the fruit has deepened to earthy black cherry with a bit of roasted character in the fruit, very mineral and long. Reminds me of the Roty "Pressonnier," with terrific length, while remaining balanced. A Burgundy with real character at a reasonable price. Hold three to five years for peak drinking.

Chandon de Briailles 2010 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Forneaux

In 2010 Chandon de Briailles used more stems than in 2011 and we were mildly surprised to find this bottle open for business, quite delicious, and showing more red fruit and raspberry Pinot character than many of the 2011s, which are by and large darker and plummier. For the most part, however, the nose is all soil-y earth, brambles, red flower petals, and leaves. High acid and a touch irony on the palate, the tannins offer a lively but not overwhelming backdrop to the wine's crunchy, bright Pinot fruit. There aren't many bottles left... snap them up! 2010 is a lovely vintage and it shines through in this wine. -msb

Esmonin, Sylvie 2010 Bourgogne Rouge

Sylvie Esmonin's Bourgogne Rouge is a fresh but serious young wine from Pinot Noir vines just outside of Gevrey-Chambertin. Lively and warm, with spicy dark cherry aromas, rich strawberry leather, woodsy bark and dense, bitter earth on the finish. Stimulating acid and tangy young tannins make it a great pairing for simply grilled meats and charcuterie, with plenty of potential down the road. -AR

Magnien, Stephane 2010 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers

Les Sentiers is a superb premier cru, just below Bonnes Mares, north of the village. This had just been bottled, before our February visit, and was a bit shut down aromatically. The palate showed the lovely combination of lightness and density in all Magnien's 2010s, very supple and elegant with perfect acidity. Intense cherry/strawberry fruit with a very slight oak presence. This should age beautifully — Stephan pointed out the variety of terroirs in Les Sentiers (and in Bonnes Mares) giving the wines a bit more muscular style than other Chambolles.

Magnien, Stephane 2010 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnieres

On very stony soil, just below Clos de la Roche. Beautiful red fruits, raspberry, strawberry, red currant. The palate is dense but not heavy, as with all these wines, with fabulous balance. Lovely length of fruit in the finish with bright acidity, highly recommended!

Magnien, Stephane 2011 Bourgogne Passtoutgrain

Bourgogne Passtoutgrain is taken seriouly at Domaine Stephan Magnien, even if the wine is meant to be a simple, pleasant everyday red. There are two cuvees of Passtoutgrain here, Tradition, which is lighter and ready to drink and Densité, which is more structured and needs a bit of aging. The 2011 Tradition is quite delicious, with lovely strawberry and cherry fruit aromas and a supple, light and nicely balanced palate. Really quite elegant, pretty and refreshing and a great value, too! (The estate has never used herbicdes, and has always worked the soil. Only organic composts are used, and fermentations are without efforts to extract, producing light, old-fashioned Burgundies.)

Maréchal, Catherine et Claude 2010 Auxey-Duresses

This lovely Auxey-Duresses really stood out at out tasting with Claude and Catherine Maréchal last winter. Really pretty strawberry/cherry aromatics with earth and mineral notes. The palate was quite complex and long with great balance. We're loving the 2010 vintage in Burgundy and this nice value village wine will drink well over the next 10 years.

Maréchal, Catherine et Claude 2010 Pommard La Chaniere

A beautiful Pommard from Catherine and Claude Maréchal. La Chanière, just above the premier cru of the same name, is a south-facing slope in the valley above Les Arvelets. This showed beautifully in our tasting with Claude last winter—complex high-toned red fruit aromas, dense palate without fat, well-structured and with terrific length. This will need a few years in the cellar, peak drinking perhaps five to fifteen years from now. Highly recommended.

Maréchal, Catherine et Claude 2010 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières

This is a beautiful Savigny Premier Cru. The nose has a strong earth and mineral component. The palate is very bright, lean and youthful with firm acidity. A nice example of the 2010 vintage—very terroir-expressive!

Rapet 2010 Aloxe-Corton

The Rapet Aloxe-Corton is particularly successful in 2010. The deep, iron-rich soils here can give quite plump and generous wines, but in this excellent vintage there is better balance than in 2009. In 2010, the small berries and lower yields gave a wine in which the ripeness is nicely off-set by good acidity and more earthy, mineral character. This will age beautifully, giving a velvety wine that will do well at the end of a meal....
