Stony Hill Vineyard is one of the great treasures of traditional California winemaking, arguably the greatest source for mountain grown Chardonnay. With age these Chardonnays put on weight and become full flavored, much like Chablis. The vineyards are high up on Spring Mountain, 725 feet above the valley floor and the cool night temperatures preserve the natural acidity in the grapes. In fifty vintages Stony Hill has never acidified their wine, rare for California Chardonnay; malos are blocked and the resulting structure makes these great Chardonnays some of the longest lived white wines made not just in California, but anywhere.
These wines come to us from a California collector who bought the wines on release and kept them unmoved in his temperature-controlled home cellar. We've had quite a few aged bottles from this cellar over the last year (back to the 1920s!), which have shown extremely well.
Our friend John Gilman of "View from the Cellar" wrote a major profile on Stony Hill, available at the link below. Don't miss this chance to obtain some of these extremely rare, historic California Chardonnays!
