New Arrivals from Domaine des Vignes du Maynes!

We're particularly happy to have a new shipment from Alain and Julien Guillot at the Domaine des Vignes du Maynes.  This allocation features the superb Sainte Genevieve Brut Rosé, and their wonderful new white, the Macon-Cruzille "les Chassagnes."   The vineyards of this extraordinary estate belonged to the Abbey of Cluny and date back to at least 900 AD - it is the oldest practicing organic vineyard in France. (Vignes du Maynes = Vignes du Moines, or Vines of the Monks. The estate is part of the Federation des Sites Clunisiens) Acquired by Julien's grandfather in 1954 and immediately tended with organic methods, the vines have never been treated with modern pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.

The Domaine's seven hectares are in Cruzille on high-elevation east-facing slopes of hard crystallized limestone with thin clay soils. The vines average about fifty years of age, with some up to 100 and are replaced by massale selection.  Hand-harvesting of course into small containers. The red grapes are piled carefully in a pyramid shape and undergo a nine-day true carbonic maceration after which they are pressed, with the alcoholic fermentation lasting about fifteen days with pigeage by foot. Whites are pressed slowly in a wooden pressoir from 1895, aging is sur lie in old barriques. The wines have a complexity both of fruit and of minerality which is unique and they rarely need additives of any kind - "we have fifty years of experience in natural vinifications" says Julien, "and we pay careful attention of course to the right day and atmospheric pressure for bottling." (The reds are produced without added sulfites, the whites receive a minimal dose depending on the vintage) The youthful Julien Guillot, who had a lively career as an actor and acrobat before returning to the family vineyards, is doing inspired work at the Domaine du Vignes du Maynes. The estates great terroir and living soils are producing some of the most interesting wines of Burgundy.

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Brut Rosé

2011 Vignes du Maynes Brut Rosé is riper than the past two vintages of this wine. It's a bit deeper in color with more overt cherry and strawberry Pinot fruit. The earthy and iron-y notes on the nose remain; it's an extremely mineral wine with cranberry, cherry cordial, hibiscus, rosehip, tea leaves, and fruit seeds. Mostly Pinot with a touch of Gamay, there's a tiny bit of funk upon first opening, but nothing excessive. The fruits are pure and the wine takes on more irony depth the longer it's open. Terrific length. Easy and delicious, generous and satisfying, but by no means insubstantial. (No added sulfur) -Sophie Barrett

Vignes du Maynes 2002 Crémant de Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Ex Brut

Nine years on the lees! We are surprised and delighted at how Champagne-like this wine is, while retaining rich, generous, earthy Mâcon character. On the nose it shows umami notes: oyster mushroom, and a toasty, very lightly oxidative nuttiness. The palate is quite round and supple and the wine has clearly fleshed out and broadened with time the way that long lees-aged Champagnes do. The bubbles are lively and present. Given the prices of 2002 vintage Champagnes, we'd say this is a superb value! -msb

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Macon-Cruzille Aragonite

Julien Guillot's Aragonite is a great bottle of white burgundy. The aromas are very subtle and expressive of the wines firm acidity. Citrus peel and stony flavors on the palate with crystalline acids and hints of white fruits. Left alone for a few days the wine softens, with exotic fruit flavors emerging but still subtle and balanced. Think of a drier and more mineral version of Thevenet's superb Bongran. Decant for best current drinking or keep open, re-corked, for a few days.

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Macon-Cruzille Les Chassagnes

This is a superb, subtle and very mineral Chardonnay from a replanted parcel at the very top of the Clos, abandoned since 1896, with thin clay soils rich in iron over limestone. A great terroir, never chemically treated and worked in biodynamic farming by Alain and Julien Guillot. Yields of 18 hl/ha in 2011, giving a racy, stony wine with hints of white fruits, spice and honey, the palate is all mineral with subtle citrus and white fruits, very long and elegant. Only 36 bottles available — highly recommended!

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Bourgogne Cuvèe Auguste

Produced from old vines of the small-berried Pinot Fin, 2011 Cuvée Auguste is absurdly generous right out of the gate, with notably more extract than the previous vintage. Dense black fruit and subtle maltiness remain balanced by plenty of acidity and a slightly higher-toned nose. Absolutely stupendous on day two—much of its weight has been shed overnight, giving way to unexpected florality, cherry fruit and exceptionally delicate poise. No added sulfites. –sew

The Manganite is made with old-vine Gamay from the magnificent Macon-Cruzille vineyard of the Clos des Vignes du Maynes, whose untreated soils produce remarkably subtle and complex wines. Guillot, Julien 2011 Pouilly-Fuissé Sur la Roche

(From a small parcel in the vineyard "Sur la Roche," certified organic and biodynamic) This is a lovely, pure and crystalline Pouilly-Fuissé with very subtle aromatics of floral lemon/lime, exotic fruit, chalk and wet stone. The palate is very mineral and saline, with citrus and white fruits and great finishing acidity. Racy and delicious now, this should improve nicely with three to five years of aging.

Guillot, Julien 2011 Chenas Cuvèe Ultimatum Climat

Julien Guillot makes this lovely Chenas with purchased fruit from a friend working organically near La Chapelle-de-Guinchay. Blackberry, violet, earth and spice aromas. The palate is deep with blackberry, cherry, graphite and earthy flavors. This is really a complex and fascinating Beaujolais, made without added sulfites, bottled unfiltered. (The label refers to the "Ultimatum Climatique" signed in Copenhagen in 2009 to end global warming)
