Three Small Cellars

Share

We recently purchased three small cellars: one of Bordeaux, one of Burgundy, and  one of Riesling. These wines were well stored, and give you the chance to purchase wines that someone else paid to store for many years. Take advantage of the opportunity to try some wonderful back vintage French and German wines from great producers. There are some everyday wines as well as some fantastic bottles for special occasions.

A quick tale pertaining to the German Rieslings you'll see listed below: Once upon a time the most sought after German wine was from the Rheingau. In the Victorian age, the generic name for German wine was Hock - an abbreviation of Hochheimer. California wineries used to market "Johannisberg Riesling" because that was a name consumers knew.  Some of the best known names were Schloss Johannisberg, Schloss Vollrads, and Schloss Eltz in Eltville. The Eltz family owned some of the greatest vineyards in the Rhinegau before they sold off the properties due to a combination of financial difficulties and the construction of a super highway. But in the heyday of Rheingau wines, Eltz was considered one of the best. Here is a chance to experience a piece of history as well as a fine, mature Riesling. -jbt

Leoville Las Cases 1978 St Julien

We tasted this two years ago and loved it – a really classic Claret. It was satisfyingly complete and contemplative, a wine to savor with leg of lamb or roast beef – a very old fashioned, Anglo kind of Xmas-y wine.

Pensees de Lafleur 1994 Pomerol

This wine has been in a cool damp cellar since it was bought on release.  It is in perfect condition- the bottle I tried the cork was very clean and unstained.  The bottle I had was decanted just before dinner and after an hour it really started to open up and showed very plush and full.  Pensees de Lafleur has a great mineral character from the iron rich soil.  Some tasters say they get the aromas of black cherries and truffles, I can't say I got that but I sure did like the bottle we had.  This is made from approximately 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the same mix as Cheval Blanc.  I really like Pensees de Laflleur and it costs a lot less than the Grand Vin — Chateau Lafleur.
