New Arrivals from Spain, with Rafa Bernabé & Recaredo!

Share

The store is awash in delicious Spanish wines this fall! We are particularly pleased to welcome the vivid, textured, and nuanced reds from Rafa Bernabé in Spain's resurgent Alicante region. Rafa's importer, Jose Pastor, explains that Bernabé was long respected in the central Mediterranean region as a maker of more modern, showy wines from Monastrell and international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. He subsequently fell in love with the kind of natural wines that are pure translations of both terroir and grape, opening his mind to the possibilities presented by clay amphora, whole cluster fermentations, and varietal wines from overlooked indigenous grapes like Merseguera, Fourcayat, and Rojal. Rafa farms his pebbly limestone soils organically, sulphurs minimally at bottling, and makes many wines in small amounts - 30 different vinifications last year, according to Pastor. Native yeast fermentations and minimal intervention create plush, herbal, earthy, and layered wines with remarkable clarity and zest. We wish we could have them all, but for now we are pleased to offer three standouts from recent tastings of the lineup: a fresh and rosy amphora-fermented Rojal, a spicy and show-stopping Garnacha Peluda, and the prettiest old vine Monastrell we've tasted.

Additional recent arrivals take us to Cava country and the rigorously farmed, exceptionally fine biodynamic wines of Recaredo in Penedès. It is always fun and interesting to taste still wines from our favorite producers of sparkling wines like Cava and Champagne, but in the case of Recaredo it is a great pleasure. Miranius is a still white wine with all the complexity, chalky mineral breadth, and rich but bone dry Spanish fruit that we love in Recaredo's Cavas. Tasting it next to the 2007 Brut Nature Cava is both a rewarding study of the best wines in Penedès, and a deeply delicious experience.

Certified organic Bobal from Utiel-Requena, carbonic old vines Garnacha from La Calandria in Navarra, Pedralonga's excellent red wine from Albariño country, another fascinating still wine from a Cava producer (Gramona), and the return of Bermejos sparkling Malvasia round out the offer. Cheers! -AR

Bodegas Bernabé 2012 Alicante La Amistad

The  Rojal grape didn't make it into Jancis Robinson's book, but it's here on our shelves! A great example of red wine vinified in clay amphorae, Amistad is pale and pretty with gentle aromas of red currant, strawberry-watermelon, and mandarin orange. Zesty and clear on the palate, with demure young tannins and notes of cranberry-orange, Cortland apples, musky ripe raspberries, bitter melon, and warm cedar spice. Bodegas Bernabé 2010 Alicante Los Cipreses de Usaldon

50-yr-old Garnacha Peluda, fermented whole cluster and aged 4-6 months in 4 year old French barrel. Garnacha Peluda is the furry-leafed, thicker-skinned, higher acid relative (possibly a mutation) of Garnacha that produces lower-alcohol, more feminine and savory wines than its fur-less kin. Los Cipreses has aromas of peonies, pepper, molten chocolate, and damp wool, with flavors of sweet boysenberry, rhubarb, spicy cinnamon, earthy red beets, rosemary, and a pinch of wasabi on the long, spicy finish. Recommended for lovers of natural Cinsault! -AR

Recaredo 2012 Penedès Miranius White Wine

It is always a pleasure to experience the still wines made by our favorite Cava producers, especially when they are as complex and beautiful as this one from Recaredo! Miranius (named after the clever fox who snacks on white grapes in the vineyard) is a blend of Xarello and Macabeo (with just a bit of Chardonnay) from biodynamically farmed vines on low-yielding, north-facing limestone slopes. Aromas of crisp pear, bitter orange, white pepper, clover honey, and sunny lemon lead to a clear, tangy palate of crunchy red apple and myriad citrus notes: key lime, tangerine zest, and a squeeze of fresh lemon. The minerality on this wine is so broad and deep that it almost tastes earthy. Orange blossom and ginger linger on the finish. Vivid, pure, and a wonderful match for sushi! Recaredo continues to inspire. AR

Recaredo 2007 Penedès Brut Nature

Bone dry and languorous, with bubbles as fine as mineral water and deep, stony minerality to match. Gentle lime blossom, almond oil, lemon zest, and crisp red apple on the nose; crunchy peach, icy lime, green almond, ginger spice and a sprinkle of nutmeg on the palate. Longest possible mineral finish with the faintest hint of marzipan. Try this if you love austere Champagne like Laherte Blanc de Blancs. 50% Xarello, 38% Macabeu, 12% Parellada, biodynamically farmed. Nostalgia for Spanish oysters and delicate young Manchego is activated! -AR

The winemakers behind La Calandria, Javier Continente and Luis Fernandez, are on a quest for Garnacha in its purest form. 60-70 year old organically farmed Garnacha vines in Navarra yield the fruit for this cuvee, which undergoes carbonic maceration for a balanced and pretty expression of the grape. A cool, funky nose of black raspberry, blueberries, and graphite, with flavors of sweet red cherry, tart red plum, soft lavender, and a lingering finish of savory black currant with hints of soft clay earth. For lovers of fresh, fun, easy-to-drink Garnachas like Bielsa and Bernabeleva, Volandera is a step up in complexity and a delicious change of pace! -AR

Another wonderful still wine from Cava country (this time from Gramona, producer of great aged cavas). Gessami is a quirky and compelling blend from 35-50 year old vines of Muscat d'Frontignan, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat d'Alexandria. Fresh, floral aromas of peach blossom, pear flesh, and jasmine are balanced by flavors of crisp citrus, guava, ripe apricot, and a broad minerality. Perfect for anyone who enjoys wines that are floral and sweet-fruited without being sugary. A great match for curries, sweet-and-sour dishes, richer seafood, and a fun alternative to Riesling! -AR
