Delicious Values From Spain, Featuring A Casual Mixed Case!

Share

Discovering fresh and affordable wines to drink every day can be just as exciting as selecting old and rare bottles for special occasions. The Spanish department is home to many exceptional wines under $20 (a number of which are under $15!), including new vintages of old favorites as well as producers who are brand new to the market.

Some of these value-priced cuvèes exhibit such elegance and complexity that we pause to ponder whether they are "too good" for their price tags: the severe slate of Guimaro's 2012 Mencia Joven; subtle, salty Viura from Rioja renegade Gonzalo Gonzalo; Juan-Antonio Ponce's extraordinarily graceful (and age-worthy!) Clos Lojen Bobal; thought-provoking organic still wines from Cava country, like Recaredo's minerally Miranius white and Suriol's juicy red blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo. Others are refreshing, approachable, and versatile wines that we like to keep in stock and recommend that our customers do the same.

These delicious values are listed below, in addition to a "Casual Spanish Mixed Case" at a great price for everyday quaffing and perhaps even Superbowl Sunday. Cheers! AR

Ermita de Nieve 2012 Rueda Verdejo

Terrifically fresh Verdejo from ungrafted, high-altitude old vines in Spain's Rueda region. Tangy white grapefruit zest, silky lemon oil, subtle sea salt and celery leaf, ample minerality, and a long pretty finish of honey and herbs. Raised entirely in stainless steel, practicing organic, wild yeast fermented, with only 5,000 cases produced each year — impressive stats at this price point! A nice change for fans of Sauvignon Blanc and Gruner Veltliner. AR

Recaredo 2012 Penedès Miranius White Wine

It is always a pleasure to experience the still wines made by our favorite Cava producers, especially when they are as complex and beautiful as this one from Recaredo! Miranius (named after the clever fox who snacks on white grapes in the vineyard) is a blend of Xarello and Macabeo (with just a bit of Chardonnay) from biodynamically farmed vines on low-yielding, north-facing limestone slopes. Aromas of crisp pear, bitter orange, white pepper, clover honey, and sunny lemon lead to a clear, tangy palate of crunchy red apple and myriad citrus notes: key lime, tangerine zest, and a squeeze of fresh lemon. The minerality on this wine is so broad and deep that it almost tastes earthy. Orange blossom and ginger linger on the finish. Vivid, pure, and a wonderful match for sushi! Recaredo continues to inspire. AR

The Wine Love/Gonzalo Gonzalo 2012 Rioja White Yeti

Gonzalo Gonzalo grew up among his family's vines in Fuenmayor — the heart of Rioja Alta. He is devoted to careful, chemical-free work in the vineyard, minimal intervention in the cellar, and conjures up some of the freshest, most innovative expressions of Tempranillo and Viura in Rioja (while casually eschewing the Rioja designation). The White Yeti is 100% Viura, raised in stainless steel. It is fresh, salty, and musky, with the minerality of melted snow and subtle flavors of crunchy green apple, crisp pear, apple blossoms, green peppercorn, and fresh lemon water. AR

Via Arxentea 2012 Monterrei Treixadura y Godello

Via Arxentea is equal parts Godello and Treixadura from the sandy/clay soils of Monterrei in Galicia, fermented with native yeasts and raised in stainless steel. Exotic and spicy aromas of lime zest, crisp pineapple, white grapefruit, meyer lemon, and subtle pink florals prime the palate for flavors of crisp green apple, musky guava, freshly cut grass, gentle acidity, and a long, mineral finish. Saiar is a certified organic vineyard of Albarino grown on granite. Fermented with wild yeasts in tank, this vintage shines with mouth-watering aromas of meyer lemon, lime zest, orange blossom, and jasmine tea. Mengoba 2012 Bierzo Brezo Doña Blanca y Godello

Brezo Blanco is a fascinating and expressive wine that keeps us on our toes vintage after vintage! This blend of old-vine Dona Blanca and Godello has elegance, complexity, focus, and depth that vastly exceed its price point, with fresh pear fruit, rich apricot, lime blossoms, chalky minerality, and subtle white pepper spice. A colleague aptly describes this wine as "Chenin meets Gruner." Extremely versatile and delicious with fresh seafood, roasted chicken, spicy fare, and cheeses. AR

Zerberos 2012 Valle del Alberche Kapi Sauvignon Blanc

Winemaker Daniel Ramos makes Sauvignon Blanc from a vineyard in the Duero owned by Vega Sicilia. Kapi is value-priced but quite serious, with warm citrus zest, crisp pineapple, musky grapefruit, and white pepper aromas. A few days of skin contact provide texture and depth that are rare in Sauvignon Blanc at this price. The palate is dewy, deep, and mineral with flecks of salt and smoke over meyer lemon, green tea, lemon balm, and orange spice. AR

Preto 2011 Tierra de Leon Prieto Picudo Rosado

The wonderful Gregory Perez (Mengoba) makes this perfumed, spicy, and unusual rose from the indigenous Prieto Picudo grape. It undergoes some carbonic maceration, which results in a dark fuschia hue and floral flourish. Flavors of savory black currant, red plum, rose water, and citrus zest combine with cumin, cayenne, and fresh green peppercorns for a full-bodied and complex all-weather rose. AR

Ponce 2012 Manchuela Clos Lojen

Juan Antonio Ponce's entry level cuvee, from 30-year-old organic and biodynamic Bobal vines in Manchuela, is light-bodied but full of intense fruit and acid — dense black raspberry, tart purple plum, and wild blueberry fruit with pronounced minerality and taut youthful tannins. This is a lifted, poised, and positively delicious natural wine at a price that encourages stockpiling. According to Ponce himself, this vintage of Clos Lojen is the best he's made and worthy of aging. Ariana Rolich

Suriol 2011 Penedes Vi Negre Garnacha Tempranillo

A delicious organic red wine from Cava country! This is Garnacha and Tempranillo from our friends at Suriol, with juicy, creamy aromas of ripe strawberry, funky black berries, umami, tobacco, and black peppercorn. Racy acidity brightens the constellation of herbal, brambly flavors in this complex wine: coriander, dried grass, savory black currants, tart red plums, hibiscus, cinnamon, and tannic black tea. Fabulously tasty! AR

Cleansing, invigorating, and rejuvenating. A rich, brazen red, but brought into focus with tart, vibrant, springy skin tannins that provide plenty of bounce and vigor. Pure and exciting. JK

Viña Ilusión 2011 Rioja Joven

Martin Alonso and Gloria Plaza are disciples of Masanobu Fukuoka, the Japanese farmer/philosopher and proponent of "do-nothing" farming. They work 5 bucolic hectares of Tempranillo on iron-rich limestone and clay soils at 700m altitude in the Rioja Baja subzone. They make only one wine: the delicious Viña Ilusión, which is certified organic, wild yeast fermented, and raised in tank (no oak), Viña Ilusión is fresh, bright, and giving, with a layered palate of ripe red plum flecked with delicate florals, spicy oregano, sweet tobacco, and subtle earth. Ariana Rolich

From 30-year-old vines grown on sand and granite, the 2012 vintage of this lovely Garnacha is fuller-bodied than the lifted, Pinot Noir-like 2011. Bernabeleva's trademark pretty red fruits and flowers blend with rich Spanish spice, deep purple fruits, and earth, for a lush and delicious everyday red. AR

Their estate fruit is certified organic, harvested by hand, and fermented with native yeasts. The Crianza is 100% Tempranillo, aged for 15 months in used American oak, for a food-friendly, medium-bodied Rioja with pretty florals, bright red berries, dusky plums, and an easy, earthy finish. Frontón de Oro 2011 Gran Canaria Tinto

This light and pretty vintage of the Tinto flawlessly channels the subtle fruit and herbs of Listan Negro (blended with Tintilla) in a way that is fascinating for the seasoned Canary Islands drinker as well the curious novice. Mellow black raspberry, dusky mulberry, bitter cherry, and the juice of fresh heirloom tomatoes float across the palate with the telltale whiff of ashy earth and salty island air. (There's something about Listan Negro that makes me think about reds from the Jura... This one is the color of Trousseau, with some of the notes I find delightful in Poulsard. Just a thought!) A great pairing for vegetarian fare and charcuterie. AR
