Pierre and Catherine Breton

New Arrivals from France; Loire, Burgundy, Beaujolais!

Share

Tis the season for new arrivals and some very exciting new wines have docked in Newark and made their way to Chambers Street!

Loire Valley:  2012 is proving to be an excellent vintage for Loire Valley reds, but quantities, as elsewhere in France, were very low. This makes the new arrivals from Pierre and Catherine Breton particularly noteworthy as the wines are sensational, but limited in availablility. Pierre and Catherine have been leaders in organic and biodynamic viticulture for many years. Their vineyard work and vinifications preserve what is living in the soil and in the wine, producing Chinon and Bourgueil that are subtle, elegant and superbly expressive of their different terroirs. We're offering Bourgueil "Trinch" and  "Les Galichets" and the Chinon "Beaumont" from the vivacious 2012 vintage and, finally, the long-awaited 2010 Bourgueil "Les Perriéres" - a wine for the ages, but only 30 bottles are available.

Burgundy: One of our favorite producers of red and white Burgundy is Henri Prudhon et Fils - never over-oaked or over-extracted, the wines seem to be excellent in every vintage. We've just received an assortment of these very traditional wines, including 2010 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "En Remilly" and "Chateniere" which are really superb and deserve your attention.

Beaujolais: The 2012 Beaujolais, in similarity with reds from the Loire, have lovely pure fruit, moderate alcohol and bright acidity, making them refreshing and delicious and capable of medium-term aging. A few recent favorites are the Pignard Morgon Cuvée Tradition, a fabulously complex wine built to age, the Chignard Fleurie "les Moriers' which is especially pretty in this vintage, and the lovely Chenas from the talented Julien Guillot at Vignes du Maynes.

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2012 Bourgueil Trinch

A beautiful vin-de-soif, the 2012 Trinch from Pierre and Catherine Breton is a refreshing and delicious Bourgueil to drink over the next few years. Pretty, ripe black cherry and strawberry aromas, quite elegant and deep, but balanced by bright acidity. The palate is supple and lush, more cherry-ish than normal for a Bourgueil, but remains light-on-its feet. Very food friendly and great by itself, served quite cool, perfect with picnics and grilled foods this summer...

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2012 Bourgueil Les Galichets

Les Galichets comes from 2 hectares of 50-year-old Cabernet Franc vines planted on the gravelly soils surrounding the Breton's winery. 2012 is a joyful vintage for this wine and appropriate for immediate drinking with complex aromas of raspberry, red currant, gentle florals, and damp earth. Youthful tannins and fresh acidity frame the palate of rich black cherry, tart strawberries, savory green herbs, a touch of tobacco, and black pepper spice. A juicy, delicious, and light-hearted pairing for burgers, market-fresh vegetables, and pork chops from the grill! AR

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2012 Chinon Beaumont

From old vines in clay/limestone soils in Beaumont, this cuvee offers immediate pleasure (a cuvée Epaulé-Jeté!) as well as the potential to age beautifully over ten to fifteen years. In 2012 the wine is light to medium-bodied and moderate in alcohol at 12%, with lovely pure fruit framed in flavors of earth and chalky acids. Aromas of ripe strawberry and red currant with hints of black pepper and mint. The palate shows ripe berry fruits with saline minerals — subtle and elegant, this is a great "food wine" that benefits from aeration or a day or two open, recorked. This is a classic Chinon, a product of longtime organic/biodynamic farming and superb work in the cellar.

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Les Perrieres

One of our favorite Loire Valley reds is the Pierre and Catherine Breton Bourgueil Les Perrieres, and we have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 2010. As opposed to the heavier and more forward 2009, the 2010 is lighter and medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with earthy, bright acidity and obviously built to last — a "grand vin!" From 70+ year-old vines in mid-slope on soil of clay and silica over limestone. Deep black/red color; elegant aromas of black fruits, earth and mint, subtle and beautiful. Intense fruit on the palate but not at all heavy — blackberry, red currant, black pepper, bitter chocolate and mint with a hint of oak, framed in cool acidity with a tannic structure that will carry this wine for twenty years or more. Powerful and complex yet balanced and elegant at 12.5% alcohol. This beautiful wine comes from the Bretons long experience with this parcel, their 30 years of organic and biodynamic farming and a masterful vinification and élevage, with minimal SO2, which allows great terroir expression and ageability. I will be putting this wine in my cellar, along with my 2010 Baudry Croix Boissee, and, if I can afford it, a 2010 Clos Rougeard, for a nice tasting in 2034! (Some details: Hand harvested into small boxes; 7 day cool maceration, wild yeast fermentation in oak vat without addition of SO2, progressively warmer over 15 days; no chaptalization, minimal extraction — one pumping over, no cap punching; aged in 10% new, 90% one-year-old barrels for two years with one racking; bottled after 2 1/2 years on a "flowering" day.) Prudhon 2008 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge "Les Chambres"

A subtle, old-fashioned Burgundy from Prudhon feauturing delicate aromas of wild strawberry and tart cherry with hints of spice and violet. The palate is dense but quite light with earthy red fruits and saline mineral flavors. This is more about soil than fruit. Terrific length and firm acidity in the finish. A lovely wine to drink now, served a bit cool — keep 5 to 8 years for a more complex experience.

Prudhon 2009 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Cuvée les Rouges-Gorges

Don't be afraid of the 2009 vintage chez Prudhon! Yes there is a bit more lovely pinot fruit in the nose, floral cherry and strawberry, but the palate retains the delicate, complex fruit and beautiful chalky mineral character with good acidity always present in the Prudhon reds. This is a delicious Burgundy to drink over the next 6 to 10 years and it's a great value!

Prudhon 2010 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chatenière

A "micro-cuvee" of about 65 cases, the wine comes from forty year-old vines on a steep south-west facing slope above the hamlet of Gamay. The Prudhon Saint-Aubin 1er Crus are always great values in White Burgundy and the 2010 Chateniere is fabulously mineral, fresh and pure. 60 bottles available.

Prudhon 2010 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly

The Prudhons have one-quarter hectare in this great vineyard located on a high plateau above Chevalier-Montrachet. The soil is full of small stones, mixed with clay over limesone, giving wines of great aromatic complexity with firm acidity and mineral flavors. Very little is available in this great Burgundy vintage — the wine is beautful in it's youthful vivacity and will age well for ten to fifteen years.

Prudhon 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignières

The Prudhons feel that this wine is their "best rapport quality/price of the domain, given the vineyard's position just below Bâtard and Bienvenue-Bâtard." There are two small parcels, one with 30 year-old, the other with 80 year-old vines. The wine receives a longer élevage in older barrels in order to preserve the aerien and mineral quality of Puligny.

Pignard 2012 Morgon Tradition

The Pignard's Morgon Cuvée Tradition is simply superb in 2012. Good friends with Christian Ducroux, the Pignards practise similar methods of biodynamic farming and natural vinifications. Produced from steep hillside vineyards, the wine ferments naturally, with only 10mg of SO2 added and spends a year in vat followed by a year in old barriques. The 2012 vintage was a difficult one for the growers, resulting in very low yields, but producing beautiful wines with pure fruit, light to medium body and firm acidity. The wine shows bright raspberry and strawberry aromas that deepen with darker fruits, earth and roast meats. Very saline and mineral on the palate with complex berry fruits balanced by firm acidity. This is a superb Morgon of terroir that will benefit from decanting or five years in the cellar. Highly recommended! Tasted again after 3 days open, the wine has deepened with aromas  of black cherry, mint and spice appearing, the palate shows blackberry, red-currant, licorice and spice infused with minerals in the long finish. Really superb!

Chignard 2012 Fleurie Les Moriers

The Chignard's vineyard "les Moriers" is a high wedge-shaped parcel that descends into Moulin-a-Vent, giving a wine that is always well-structured and frequently austere in it's youth. The very low yields in 2012 have given this wine more  immediate expression, with gorgeous raspberry, wild-strawberry and violet aromas and a beautiful light to medium-bodied palate with bracing acidity. Drink this now for the elegant, youthful fruit but this should be superb after 5 to 8 years of cellaring.

Guillot, Julien 2012 Chénas Ultimatum Climat

This is a lovely "natural" Chénas, made from purchased organic grapes, and without SO2, by the talented Julien Guillot of the Clos des Vignes du Maynes. Aromas of ripe cherry and red currant with hints of violet, earth and roast meats. Bright, juicy red and black fruits on the medium-bodied palate, with refreshing acidity. Serve with charcuterie, grilled meats and full-flavored cheeses. (Recommended by Eric Asimov in the NYTimes 5/19/14)
