Rosé, Part Two: Baudry, Terres Dorees, Vissoux, Pradeaux, Gourgonnier and Many More!

Share

Very high on our list of Most Favorite Rosés is the beautiful Chinon made by our good friends Bernard and Matthieu Baudy. This delightful Cabernet Franc is light, refreshing, subtle, and complex. Great by itself as an aperitif, it's also a fine accompaniment to seafood, grilled chicken, pork and burgers, great with grilled vegetables, too! Despite our long relationship with the Baudrys, we don't get as much of this wine as we'd like, so don't delay in ordering - come July and August you'll be glad you did...

Please take a moment to peruse the rest of this rosé-colored list, featuring some outstanding wines from Sancerre, Beaujolais, and Provence with a few delightful pétillant roses as well!

Thomas-Labaille 2013 Sancerre Rose "L'Authentique"

100% Pinot Noir from limestone soils in and around the village of Chavignol in Sancerre. Very pale pink-onion skin color. Subtle raspberry, peach, floral and herbal aromas. The palate is extremely light with hints of yellow and red fruits, very dry and crisp, almost a Blanc de Noirs rather than a rosé. Very elegant and silky on the palate, this should improve nicely over the next few months, lovely wine!

Dauny 2013 Sancerre Rosé Pynoz

Even though the grape used in Sancerre Rosé is Pinot Noir, good examples of Sancerre Rosé taste unmistakably like Sancerre with the crisp, citrusy, and laser-like mineral edge of a good white Sancerre. This bottle is delicate, fragrant, and steely, but with a little bit more weight and earthiness than the 2012. The Dauny estate has been organic since the 1960s and this Rosé comes from its younger vines. Enjoy as you would a white Sancerre, with fish, salad, and lighter fare, and make sure to save a glass for the patio or fire escape. MSB

Vissoux 2013 Beaujolais les Griottes Rose

From Pierre Marie Chermette, this is a light, zingy rosé with a very subtle nose and a fair (but not overwhelming) amount of acidity. Crisp, clean, and a bit... tart in the finish. A perfect food rosé, or just a nice all around choice for a refreshing glass this summer.  — EL

Ducroux 2012 Vin de France Esquisse Rose

In late October and early November of 2012, Christian Ducroux harvested the "grisemottes" — secondary berries on his high-altitude Beaujolais vines — to make his Esquisse Rose. This is an austere and earthy wine with hints of raspberry and watermelon aromas with a palate of saline minerals and subtle berry fruits. Light but fairly intense, this should improve over the next 6 to 12 months. Too lean for some tastes perhaps, but a fascinating dry and delicious wine. Certified biodynamic with no additives, zero SO2.

Gourgonnier 2013 Les Baux de Provence Rose

This is a consistently lovely Provencal rosé from a long-time organic estate near Les Baux. (www.gourgonnier.com) The 2013 has lovely peach, red fruit and blood orange aromas, the palate is full and supple with citrusy red fruits that carry through on the long finish. Really a refreshing and balanced wine with surprising depth, this will be quite versatile at the table all summer, and lovely to sip by itself.

Pradeaux 2013 Côtes de Provence Rosé "Château"

A blend of Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and a little bit of Barbaroux, this is a fresh, crisp, classic Provencal rosé that offers floral, strawberry, and fresh fennel notes on the nose. Lighter and less earthy than the last vintage, this will delight lovers of very pale, elegant rosés.The palate is delicate, sheer, bright, and stony. Pair with seafood, or a sunny afternoon. MSB

Pradeaux 2013 Bandol Rose

Robust, rich, and complex with an ability to age gracefully, this wine is based on Cinsault and Mourvèdre, taking it's slight orange tint from the latter cepage. There's a wonderful earthy, salty quality to this wine that speaks very much of Mourvèdre. Very limited availablility, and showing more structure than fruit right now, we think this is a great choice for the cellar. MSB

Petit Domaine de Gimios 2011 Vin de Table Petit Rose de Gimios

Gorgeous, giving, and quite a bit drier than the 2010 vintage. The aromatic allure of Petit Gimios is here in spades: rich kirsch, soft brambly mulberry, naval orange zest, cran-raspberry, and sweet sunny lemonade; the palate is full and clear, with sweet blackberry flesh, tart red plums, zippy mandarin orange and sweet ripe tomatoes complemented by accents of cool lavender, fresh oregano, subtle purple fruit skins, black licorice and pencil lead. A touch sweet, entirely unique, and very well-balanced. -AR (Biodynamic farming, no additives of any kind—a completely natural wine)

Clos du Joncuas 2012 Gigondas Rosé

From primarily Grenache with some Cinsault and Syrah, always cultivated organically, wild yeast fermentation. Beautiful deep pink-red color. Deep, bright cherry and raspberry liqueur with grilled almond and brown spice. Lovely weight on the palate with supple ripe fruit that continues in the long earthy finish. A big wine but nicely balanced and still young — serve with grilled tuna, grilled veggies, pork and Moroccan cuisine. Superb!

Cirelli 2013 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo

Don't let the brown glass bottle fool you, Cirelli's Cerasuolo (Italian for cherry-like, and used to describe rosé wines) is a brilliant pink/orange color and has delicious, fresh flavors of raspberry seed and savory herbs.  Not shy, this wine has a rich texture, and could certainly be considered a nice everyday value for fans of Bandol or other fuller bodied rosés. All of this character at a thirst-quenching 12.5% alcohol.  We've been happily working with Cirelli's organic Montepulciano and Trebbiano; if only we could convince them to send some of their pasta and geese!  JR

A zestier, more mineral-driven rendition of Prieto Picudo for fans of the extremely popular Rosado from Preto and a fantastic companion for grilled fare and long, warm weekends! AR

Schloss Gobelsburg 2013 Kamptal 'Gobelsburger' Rosé Cistercien

About as refreshing as they come, with a very light spritz, and often one of our best selling rosés of the season, this bottle is every bit as delightful as it was last summer. Négociant rosé from one of Austria's most dynamic and fascinating producers. Pale, peach-skin pink in the glass, with bright, zesty aromas that have as much to say about the vines' loess-based soil as the grapes' inherent fruity qualities. This is a strikingly grüner-esque rosé that speaks volumes about the general terroir of Lower Austria. Expect a hint of salinity and a vibrant finish. MSB

Edmunds St. John 2013 El Dorado County Bone-Jolly Gamay Rosé

Steve Edmunds is one of those wise Californians who sources grapes from places they should be grown, i.e. Gamay on volcanic soils, which produces his delicious Rosé Bone Jolly. Lovely, juicy red fruits with good acidity, incredibly crisp, refreshing, and fermented with wild yeasts.  This year's vintage has a rich, cool, blue minerality, and a long savory finish.  JR

Puzelat-Bonhomme 2012 Vin Petillant de France Cabernet Franc Rosé

Petillant Naturel from 2012 made with Cabernet Franc "non dosé," having a lovely orange/salmon color and a light sparkle with pretty red-currant, blood orange and peach aromas. Slightly demi-sec, the palate continues with lovely red and yellow fruits, a bit of spice and a surprising long lingering finish. In other words, this wine is really yummy and much too easy to drink. Probably no SO2 and a little bit of RS, so consuming the bottle in one day is happily advised. DL

About 8% alcohol and slightly sweet, it's insanely delicious, even your mother-in-law will love it. It’s also a great apéritif because the effervescence and delightful berry flavors open your palate. Strohmeier NV Steiermark Schilcher Frizzante

Blauer Wildbacher is an indigenous grape of the Steiermark region of Austria. Naturally high in acid, the grape lends itself well to sparkling wines. Franz has 3.5 hectares of Blauer Wildbacher, farmed organically (with biodynamic treatments). The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment in stainless steel, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle. Antique rose gold with just a blush of dusty peach in the glass. Ruby red grapefruit and a touch of volatile acidity on the nose, the wine has less overt berry fruit this vintage, skewing more towards red plum, nectarine, apricot, grapefruit, cranberry and a tartness that reminds one of kombucha.
