Huet 2002 Vouvray Petillant Brut

(Note; The current Cuvée is the second bottling and was disgorged in the summer of 2009. There will be a third, no doubt more expensive, and final bottling, labeled "Reserve" in 2010) This Champagne look-a-like is toasty, biscuity, yeasty and full of apples, baking spices and pears. The mousse is so fine it tastes like it should be some $300 tete de cuvee from some huge luxury goods company . . .but wait a second its not. It's an organic, biodynamic, hand harvested, 4 years lees aged kick-ass value. Would love to stick this in a blind tasting of vintage Champagne.

Luneau-Papin 2009 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Terres de Pierres

This fascinating wine is from a new parcel, La Butte de la Roche, high on a dome of igneous rock with quartz stones overlooking the marshes of Goulaine. The young Pierre-Marie Luneau is in charge here and is doing great vineyard work, reclaiming this wonderful site. The aromas are quite subtle for a 2009, with hints of pear, spice and citrus skin. The palate is very elegant and restrained with wet stones, white fruits hints of spice and anise. Quite pure and relatively light and low in alcohol at 12%. Drink over the next ten years or so....

Pepiere 2007 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Granite de Clisson

Marc recently released the 2007 Granite de Clisson, and although the vintage was more difficult than 2005, giving yields of only 20 hl/ha and a moderate 12.2 degrees alcohol, the elegance, balance and depth of this wine are simply astounding. In a recent conversation, Marc expressed his preference for the 2007, citing the better “fraicheur” and higher acidity. The last six months of sur-lie aging were essential and “vachement interessant” he said, as the warmer temperatures in the cellar over the spring and summer helped liberate material and complexity from the lees.The wine is beginning to open up slightly showing intense aromatics of lemon oil, menthol and fennel with a dense and stony mid-palate. Marc is uncertain if it will age as well as his Clos des Briords, although a similar wine made by his neighbor Michel Bregeon is at its’ best between 20 and 25 years of age. Don't hesitate to enjoy this wine young however — two bottles recently consumed at my house were perfect accompaniments to full-flavored dishes with scallops and flounder. Following this wine’s development will be fascinating — this gives us old folks an inexpensive and delicious reason to stay around!

Pepiere 2009 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Ch.Thebaud Clos Morines

This is a brilliant Muscadet from a great hillside parcel of old vines belonging to Remy Branger's family. The wine spent 30 months on the lees and carries the new Cru Communal label of Chateau-Thébaud. Here we have the richness of the 2009 vintage but with lovely balance and acidity. The granite of Chateau-Thebaud is more porous and fractured than that of Clisson, allowing the roots easier access to water, giving a more balanced wine in a year of hydric stress. The wine has elegant white fruit, citrus and stone aromas with less fat and more freshness than the Clisson. At 12% alcohol, the palate is lively and very mineral with hints of citrus, pear and spice. This is delicious now but will age beautifully for 20 years and more....

Bouchard, Cedric 2010 Champagne Infloresence Blanc de Noirs Val Vilaine R

This is an extremely pretty wine with luxurious yet delicate, creamy texture and notes of red and purple fruits on the nose. There's almost a quality of raspberries and cream about the wine in spite of its dryness, cut, and lingering minerality. As is often the case with Cédric Bouchard's wines, this feels effortlessly, perfectly dry but not overly austere. The wine is from a vineyard called "Val Vilaine" in Polisy, just a few kilometers away from Celles-sur-Ource where Cédric is based. Less than 1.5 hectares, the vineyard is owned by Cédric's father but worked by Cédric himself. Trust us; you want to drink this. (disgorged April, 2012)
