A Summery Spanish Mixed Case!

Share

We are inspired by the pairing potential of late-summer produce, fresh seafood, and grill-worthy meats with the crisp, complex whites, elegant rosados, and bright, juicy reds on our Spanish shelves. The 2013 vintage has arrived from a number of our favorite producers, including Raventós' scintillating (but not sparkling) Silencis Xarello, Bermejos' energizing Malvasía Volcánica and rosado of Listán Negro from from the lava-strewn island of Lanzarote, the delicate and minerally new vintage of Benito Santos' Albariño Saiar, and Bernabeleva's gracefully gulpable Garnacha from the sandy soils of San Martín de Valdeiglesias just outside of Madrid. We are pleased to offer these delicious bargains and more at an excellent price (with free local delivery) until Saturday, August 30th.* Detailed descriptions are available below. Cheers! AR

*Same day delivery is available below Canal Street. Next business day delivery (Monday- Friday) is available in Manhattan above Canal Street and in Brooklyn.

Raventós I Blanc 2013 Sant Sadurní d' Anoia Silencis Xarello

A still wine from 100% Xarello, Silencis combines the fresh acidity and assertive minerality that we love in Raventós' sparkling wines with the golden-fruited succulence of the Xarello grape. Since Raventós started converting their vineyards to biodynamic farming, each new vintage has been more exciting than the last! The 2013 Silencis is the most delicious yet, with demure aromas of musky pear, white pepper, and grapefruit pith, and a juicy palate of Meyer lemon, golden apple, tingly ginger, mouth-watering salinity, and a clear, chalky finish. -Ariana Rolich

Herencia's 100% Garnatxa Blanca is medium-bodied, dry, and juicy, with citrus fruits, apricot, hints of jasmine tea, fresh green herbs, and white pepper. Bengoetxe 2010 Getariako Txakolina

One of the only certified organic wineries in the Basque country, Bengoetxe's Txakolina is a blend of Hondarribi Zuri and Gros Manseng (Iskirita Zuri Handia), fermented with native yeasts and aged on the lees for 1 year. It has spent several years in bottle by now, which provides a lot more complexity than the typical young-drinking, slightly spritzy quaffers from the region. Bengoetxe shows layered aromas of marigold, melon, petrol, sea salt, clay, and citrus rinds. The palate is structured and lively, with beaming acidity, apricot skins, citrus oils, and more savory petrol and earth on the finish. Unique in style and a delicious pairing for summery produce, seafood, sheep's milk cheese, and gazpacho. AR

When we first tasted Txakolina – a light, fresh wine from the Basque region of Spain – we thought that they were fairly simple quaffing wines, that is: perfect for the beach, but not wine to ponder.  Don't tell the farmers at Bengoetxe! Somehow winemaker Iñaki Etxeberria coaxes savory, smoky, and flinty flavors from his clay slopes. Perhaps it's their dedication to organic farming (they were the first in the region) or maybe it's the long, native yeast fermentations. Whatever the reason, the 2010 is drinking absolutely fantastically. It's interesting to try a "mature" bottle of Txakolina – it seems much less "fruity" and more about crunchy stone flavors, and the wine has a long mineral finish. Txakolina for the intellectual! JR

Bermejos 2013 Lanzarote Malvasía Seco

This invigorating dry wine from Bodegas Los Bermejos on the Canary Island of Lanzarote is made from Malvasía Volcánica. This unique local grape that is was said to be hybrid of the Malvasía Aromática and Marmajuela varieties, but in my last meeting with Ignacio of Bermejos, I learned that it might be identical with Malvasia de Sitges. Ampelography aside, this wine is a delicious miracle, from vines that are painstakingly planted at the bottom of crater-like formations molded out of the sandy black volcanic "picone" soil that coated Lanzarote after a massive eruption in the 1700s. The wine is as singular as the surroundings that give it life, with herbal, mineral, and peach pit aromas and an elegant palate of lime peels, bitter melon, tangerine, saltwater, and a prevailing ashy minerality that is redolent of the island air. Benito Santos 2013 Rias Baixas Albariño Saiar

Saiar is a certified organic vineyard of Albariño grown on granite soils. Fermented with wild yeasts in tank, with aromas of citrus zest, jasmine tea, and orange blossoms and a dry, focused, mineral-driven palate of lime peels, lemon seeds, peach skins, white flowers, papaya, and a hint of anise. The steely minerality, brilliant acidity, and clear, elegant finish bring 2013 Saiar closer than ever before to Benito Santos' luminous Xoan and Bemil cuvees. A classic with oysters and a stellar apéritif! Ariana Rolich

Tampesta 2013 Tierra de León Prieto Picudo Rosado

Bodegas Tampesta makes just 145 cases of this elegant and refreshing garnet-hued rosé from the exotic, aromatic Prieto Picudo grape. Crisp strawberry fruit mingles with hibiscus, rosewater, and a hint of spicy cherry cola on the palate. A zestier, more mineral-driven rendition of Prieto Picudo for fans of the extremely popular Rosado from Preto and a fantastic companion for grilled fare and long, warm weekends! AR

Bermejos 2013 Lanzarote Rosado of Listán Negro

Bermejos' 100% Listán Negro rosado is one of the last to arrive each year. This means that (with some planning) we can offer the previous, more developed, vintage while we wait for the new one. While no rose of integrity is harmed by an extra year of bottle age, roses as complex as Bermejos' exult in it! Stimulating aromas of tomato stems, wild strawberry, watermelon pith, espresso, and ashy minerality carry over to the palate of tart, delicate cranberry, lots of sea salt, cherry blossoms, green almond, and seedy raspberry fruit. Light, dry, vigorously mineral, and multi-dimensional, this is an elegant accompaniment to seafood (squid, sashimi, clams) as well as gazpacho, deviled eggs, charcuterie, and rustic, nutty cheeses. Ariana Rolich

Los Bermejos is a winery based on the island of Lanzarote, part of Spain’s Canary Islands. In 1730 the island was covered with thick black lava and ash from a month-long volcanic eruption. What was left behind was a terroir well-suited for growing grapes but not much else. Lanzarote wines offer unique flavor. Think of this as a year-round rosado. It’s fresh and red fruited but also savory and complex. Enjoy with charcuterie and salty cheeses, similar to a sherry. Christine Manula

Sierra de Toloño 2012 Rioja Tempranillo

Winemaker Sandra Bravo Marin crafts this bright and beautiful young Rioja from biodynamically farmed Tempranillo vines at 650m altitude in La Bastida (not far from the great Remelluri estate). Tart cherry, rich red plum, and cool mossy earth on the nose, with an exuberant, medium-bodied palate of crisp cranberry, sweet raspberry and wild cherries, with an earthy, mineral-laden finish. This is a Rioja of extreme quality and versatility in this price range and highly recommended. Ariana Rolich

Frontón de Oro 2012 Gran Canaria Tinto

Soft-spoken brothers Pedro and Antonio Ramírez of Frontón de Oro are the team behind some of the most distinctive red wines coming out of the Canary Islands. This vintage of their basic Tinto showcases the floral and herbal side of local grape Listán Negro (with a splash of Tintilla for richness and acidity) into a fresh, young wine that is fascinating for the seasoned Canary Islands drinker as well the curious novice. Rose water and cranberry aromas meld into the palate of mellow black berries, bitter cherry, and the juice of fresh heirloom tomatoes that combines with the telltale whiff of ashy earth and salty sea air that make this region sing. A great pairing for simply grilled vegetables, light meats, and fresh lamb. AR

Guímaro 2012 Ribeira Sacra

Pedro Rodriguez of Guímaro is making incredibly elegant and expressive wines in the Ribeira Sacra, from Mencía and Godello vines planted on treacherously steep slopes of slate and schist along the River Sil. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in tank, the 2012 Joven is fine, floral, and a touch spicy on the nose; the palate reveals the potent minerality that we associate with the slate soils of the Ribeira Sacra, with soft blueberry and black raspberry fruit, rosewater, subtle black pepper, wild violets, and elegant earth. Pretty and perfumed, with fresh purple fruit and ripe red raspberry flavors, rose and violet florals, cinnamon spice, smooth tannins, and balanced acidity. Unfined, unfiltered, and fermented with native yeasts. A delicious and versatile bargain to stock up on for the holidays! Ariana Rolich
