Eric Laguerre's mountain vineyards (E. Lillie)

Great Values from the Languedoc-Roussillon: Eric Laguerre and Thierry Navarre!

Share

We're very proud to be working with two of the finest estates in the Languedoc-Roussillon, both with high-altitude mountain vineyards producing superb wines of terroir. A visit to Eric Laguerre in Saint-Martin de Fenouillet requires steep climbs through a mountain pass up to the highest vineyards in the Roussillon. Here the granite soils, cooler climate, very low yields and Eric's superb organic farming produce distinctive, balanced wines with bright fruit and firm acidities. The top wines here are named after a flowering bush called Ciste that grows throughout the vineyards contributing to biodiversity and wind protection. Le Ciste Blanc, recommended to us by Jean Gonon, is a unique blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermentino, Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu, and is one of the most interesting whites of southern France. And don't miss the unique "sous-voile" Grenache Blanc "Oxy," a blend of 2006 and 2007 fruit aged five years in barrique.

Both Eric Laguerre and Thierry Navarre are men of the earth who shun self-promotion and are most at home in their mountainside vineyards. Thierry Navarre's "gardens" are on steep slopes high above Rocquebrun, in Saint-Chinian. These are beautiful sites on soils of brown schist, where Thierry has old vines of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache as well as forgotten varieties such as Oeillade, Terret and Ribeyrenc, tended organically. We are happy to have a mature vintage of Thierry's old vine Cuvée Olivier as well as both of his delicious Vin de Pays Oeillades and his unique aperitif of late-harvest Grenache. Both of these estates harvest by hand, vinify naturally with wild yeasts and use minimal SO2. We urge you to try a selection of these unique and authentic wines! And don't be afraid of the low cost - these are honest expressions of terroir made by vignerons who honor their local traditions without artifice or inflated prices...

Navarre NV Vin de France Grenache Rosé Demi-Sec

This is a delicious vin doux naturel from Thierry Navarre made from very late-harvested Grenache. We imagine that it's a wine made the way wine used to be made all over the Languedoc before temperature control was an option. A bit sweet and somewhat sherry-like, the aromas are of prune and ripe cherry, with licorice and brown spice. Very long and nutty on the palate, perhaps the best way to imagine this wine is to think of an Oloroso sherry... then extrapolate! Absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to chocolate, fruit tarts, dried fruits or simply by itself as an apéritif. Thanks to Thierry for finally making a label and shipping us some of this unique local specialty.

Laguerre 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Blanc

Another great value from Eric Laguerre in the Roussillon! Made with Grenache Blanc, Maccabeo and Vermentino from organic high altitude vineyards on granite soils. Bright aromas of lime flower, stone, hay, anise and pear. Saline minerals on the palate with citrus, pear, hazelnut and herbal flavors. Firm acidity in the long, powerful finish with stone and citrus flavors. This is a unique and refreshing wine that will complement just abut any seafood or poultry dish and mild to full-flavored cheeses. Highly recommended, and a great value!

Laguerre 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Blanc

Eric Laguerre's "Le Ciste," (named after a flowering bush in and around his vineyards) is certainly one of the most distinctive whites of the Roussillon. Grown in Eric's high-elevation vineyards on acidic soils of decomposed granite, the wine is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Yields are about 20 Hl/Ha, harvesting is by hand in small baskets, fermentation (wild yeasts) and aging is in small barrels. Complex aromas of lemon oil, thyme, hay and white fruits—a lovely melange with contributions from each variety. The plate is dense, stony and saline with herbal, citrus and white fruit flavors. The finish is long with mineral acids. Complex and distinctive as a young wine, this will be best with a few years of cellaring. Really a Grand Cru of the Roussillon and a great value! DL

Laguerre 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Rosé

Another delicious wine from the affable and talented Eric Laguerre, from organic Syrah and Carignan grown on granite soils high in the mountains of the Roussillon. Lovely deep pink/red color, aromas of raspberry, red currant, brown spice and orange blossom. Beautiful bright red fruits on the palate with citrusy acids and good length, really delicious! A complex, medium-bodied rosé that will be perfect with a Salade Niçoise, grilled fish, chicken and pork and great to sip by itself. Showing beautifully in April of 2015 and will drink well all summer. Highly recommended!

Laguerre 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Rouge

Attention: fans of classic Côtes du Rhône! From our friend Eric Laguerre, Eos rouge is Grenache and Syrah from granite slopes high in the mountains of the Roussilllon. This vintage is perhaps a bit fresher than 2011, but with the same pure red fruit and subtle tannins. Balanced, with great acidity and length. On day two the wine showed more fruit, soft tannin and vibrancy. This wine is light enough to work with pork dishes or lighter fare, but still has depth and structure. Great Value!

Laguerre 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Le Passage

100% Carignan from the Roussillon. Notes of dark cherry, with brambly wild berry character and hints of rosehips and spice. One would almost expect the wine to be juicy and light when simply nosing it, and it does have ample acidity, but it's relatively soft and supple in mouth. Should be great with a variety of grilled foods and snacks, and any situation that can handle a wine with a little tang. Eric Laguerre's vineyard work is fabulous and completely organic and these Carignan vines are at about 2,000 ft altitude with the Mediterranean barely visible in the distance. The wine is really delicious and a great value; thank you Eric!

Laguerre 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Rouge

40% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 15% Mourvèdre, grown in high-altitude vineyards on granite soils in the Roussillon. Black/purple color, complex aromas of blackberry liqueur, black cherry, violets, cocoa, Provençal herbs, blood orange, quite deep and fresh. The palate is supple and balanced with deep black fruits and mineral acidity. A Châteauneuf-du-Pape of the Roussillon, not heavy but with great concentration and with a real mineral kick in the finish from the granite soils. Open a few hours in advance, serve with a grilled steak, pork or lamb. Best after five years in the cellar—really an outstanding southern French red and a great value!

Laguerre 2011 Côtes Catalanes Le Col des Buis (No added SO2)

Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Syrah grown in beautiful organic vineyards high in the Roussillon, and vinified with zero sulfite added. Lovely aromas of black cherry, cassis and garrigue lifted by cool acidity. Round and balanced on the palate with cool black fruits, supple but not heavy—really quite refreshing and delicious. A lovely zero-sulfur wine that's much too easy to drink! Bravo to Eric Laguerre!

Laguerre 06/07 IGP Côtes Catalanes 'Oxy' Rancio Sec 5 Year-old

A sensational and delicious sous-voile wine from Eric Laguerre. Made from Grenache Blanc grown on decomposed granite soils in Eric's high-altitude vineyards in the Roussillon, with yields of 17 Hl/Ha. A blend of 2006 and 2007 vintage fruit, vinified and aged in an old barrique, not topped-up and without added SO2. Pale gold color. Subtle ripe yellow and white fruit aromas with citrus, pine and almond. The palate is round and ripe, brightened with oxidative notes, showing ripe peach, pear, thyme, lemon oil and honey. The finish is very long with ripe pear, citrus and stone—really extraordinary! Serve with a full-flavored ceviche, chicken with morels, strong cheeses or just enjoy by itself.

Navarre 2013 Vin de Table de France Vin d'Oeillades (12 held)*

Nearly extinct, "Oeillades" is an ancient variety of the Languedoc, possibly related to Cinsault, giving soft, ripe wines with low alcohol. Thierry Navarre is preserving many old varieties in his mountain vineyards and makes a lovely rosé and this unusual and delicious red from this disappearing grape. Aromas of plum, prune, violet, spice, tea and earth. On the palate, peppery red currant and blackberry, quite ripe with a bit of prune and rose petal, with firm citrusy acids. Ripe but light at 11.5 % alcohol. A fascinating and delicious wine to serve cool with charcuterie, grilled meats, Moroccan tagines, great value as well!

Navarre 2012 Saint-Chinian Le Laouzil

Very pleasant fruit that rides the line between plush and juicy. Though the wine is forward in style, it is still unmistakably fresh and aromatic. Black plum, bing cherry, garrigue, and a touch of red pepper. This could be the perfect wine for burgers—not too hot, not too heavy, but still quenches your thirst and is soft and ripe enough to play against earthy, salty, caramelized beef. JK

Navarre 2012 Saint-Chinian Cuvée Olivier

This is a wonderful offering from St. Chinian. Grenache, Carignan and just a dash of Syrah marry well to create a deep and excitingly fresh wine from the Languedoc which is, as of recently, coming into its own as one of the great wine growing regions of the world. Old vines (treated in biodynamie, of course) that are planted in brown schist soils produce grapes of exceptional concentration and are the stepping stones to this fantastic cuvée. Native yeasts carry out a long, slow fermentation and the wine is raised in 500-liter neutral oak barriques to finish its journey. It is quite bright on the nose with that distinct Languedoc mustiness that we can all agree is one of the most pleasurable scents imaginable. Overripe plum, red currant, dried hibiscus and garrigue come to mind as well as deeper notes of gamey meats and blood orange zest. On the palate it is juicy and full of energy with a bloody touch of smashed red raspberries on the forest floor and a welcome acidity to balance it out. This is a serious wine made for any occasion. Navarre 2007 Saint-Chinian Cuvée Olivier

We're very happy to have received a few cases of Thierry Navarre's old-vine "Cuvée Olivier" from the excellent 2007 vintage, now showing lovely mature aromas and velvety texture. Black plum, blackberry, garrigue and earth and meaty aromas with blood orange and floral touches. The palate has good acidity lifting the earthy black fruits, with hints of game and brown spice. Finishes with ripe fruit, earth and mineral acids. This is a lovely mature Languedoc red—serve slightly cool with a very rare steak, stufatu or tajine.
