Late Summer Rosés: Don't be Afraid!

Share

It happens every year: a big, full-bodied, gutsy rosé comes into stock (say, for example, Clos du Joncuas Gigondas rosé), which is cherry-red and bold in flavor. I say to David Lillie "that wine scares me," and he replies "but what would you do if you had a tuna steak on the grill?!?" There's an image etched in our collective wine brain of peach-skin-pale rosés, redolent of sea breezes, babbling brooks, and fresh strawberries, pink wines that are crisp as Sauvignon Blanc. The truth is it's not just me; many people are mildly alarmed by our August hit parade of robust rosés. Part of this wariness comes from an idea that deeply hued rosés will be sweet. Allow us to dispel the notion. There's no connection between dark color and sweetness. Sometimes deeply colored rosés are drier than their pale counterparts, and they often harbor characteristics of red wine: complexity from a longer élèvage, perhaps with more that an hour's worth of skin contact. It's true you won't get the ultra-crisp, white-wine-like profile of our spring favorites such as Gobelsburg, Sulauze, and Ameztoi, but you'll get something else: depth of flavor, food-friendliness, a willingness to sit at the table alongside an array of grilled farmer's market delicacies. Below you'll find a list of recently arrived, soulful, gutsy rosés from vignerons who don't care what color pink is popular, and whose ultimate goal is to make the best rosé wine possible. I know what I'll be pouring with my next grilled tuna steak ... Santé! Sophie

(PS - Some of favorite lighter-bodied rosés are still with us, and listed at the end, such as the wonderful biodynamic wines from Domaine Les Fouques)

Clos du Joncuas 2012 Gigondas Rosé

From primarily Grenache with some Cinsault and Syrah, always cultivated organically, wild yeast fermentation. Beautiful deep pink-red color. Deep, bright cherry and raspberry liqueur with grilled almond and brown spice. Lovely weight on the palate with supple ripe fruit that continues in the long earthy finish. A big wine but nicely balanced and still young — serve with grilled tuna, grilled veggies, pork and Moroccan cuisine. Superb!

Ilarria 2013 Irouléguy Rosé

This is a very full-bodied Rosé from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat grown on limestone and schiste soil. It's a charming and peppery wine that is, above all, unique in our selection of Rosés for its deep color, its delicious hebacity, and its full body. The nose offers very deep berry fruits such as currant and cherry, all of which carry through to the palate, which is both fruity and earthy. The finish is long with firm acidity and lingering berry fruit. This is a serious, refreshing, even tannic Rosé, showing its Tannat component in its structure. A Rosé I look forward to all season long. -msb

Laguerre 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Rosé

Another delicious wine from the affable and talented Eric Laguerre, from organic Syrah and Carignan grown on granite soils high in the mountains of the Roussillon. Lovely deep pink/red color, aromas of raspberry, red currant, brown spice and orange blossom. Beautiful bright red fruits on the palate with citrusy acids and good length, really delicious! A complex, medium-bodied rosé that will be perfect with a Salade Niçoise, grilled fish, chicken and pork and great to sip by itself. Showing beautifully in April of 2015 and will drink well all summer. Highly recommended!

Ferme Saint-Martin 2013 Côtes du Ventoux Rosé d'Entrevon

A lovely rosé of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown in the Ventoux, really outstanding in the 2013 vintage. Pretty red fruit aromas, light red-currant fruit on the palate with good length. With aeration this really gets serious, with cherry fruit that is deep and long. A pure and delicious food-friendly wine, with minimal sulfur. Did we say it's a great value? As of March 2015 this wine is even better with lovely deep red currant/cherry fruit...Delicious!

Guion 2013 Bourgueil Rosé

From Cabernet Franc vines in Stéphane Guion's beautiful vineyards in Bourgueil, organic since 1965! This is a full-bodied rosé with a lovely pink/orange color, showing ripe red-currant, blood orange, brown spice and floral aromas. Cherry and red-currant fruit on the palate, fairly round and ripe but with good earthy acidity. Serve with grilled veggies, chicken, pork and Asian foods. A rosé with character and a fabulous value, like all of Stéphane's wines. 30 cases only for the US.

Texier 2014 Côtes du Rhône Rosé Chat Fou

Eric Texier has been at the vanguard of the "natural" wine scene for quite some time now and has never failed to amaze me. Even with such a seemingly simple offering as this refreshing rosé, his precision as a wine maker shines through. Made from Cinsault, it is floral with beautiful berry fruits and a lip-smacking acidity. Absolutely a gorgeous wine. Get it while you can! TG

Costes (Domaine des) 2013 Bergerac Rosé

When thinking of the Bergerac region of France, high-quality, thirst-quenching wines generally aren't the first things that come to mind. Enter Nicole Dournel of Domaine des Costes. Her wines are grown with care using organically farmed grapes and native yeasts carry out fermentation. This rosé is nothing short of an amazing deal for an end-of-summer quaffer. Made from Cabernet Franc, it exhibits lovely wild strawberry and white flower notes with hints of cracked white pepper. That same pure, wild strawberry fruit continues onto the palate accompanied by a rushing acidity and a delicate spice wrapping up with a fresh and mouth-watering finish. This wine would make for a perfect afternoon sipper, rain or shine! TG

Pibarnon 2013 Bandol Rosé

A blend of Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Grenache, this wine shows herbal, stone fruit notes, and watermelon rind on the nose, mingling with the savory earth, sea shell, and iodine character of good Bandol Rosé. The palate offers silky textures, a certain voluptuousness, and a lovely balance of acidity to full ripe fruit. Honestly, since the rosé craze, most Bandol rosé is drunk in its first year if life, but these wines are absolutely stunning with a couple with a few years of age. We drank this upon first release with very good results. It's bound to improve over the next few years; our recommendation is to stock up, try one or two now, and save the rest for 2016 and beyond. Petit Domaine de Gimios 2012 Vin de Table Petit Rosé de Gimios

A field blend of mostly Muscat and Grenache grown on broken-up calcareous rocks on a high plateau behind the village of Saint-Jean-de-Minervois. While it is one of the most natural rosés we carry (not even organic treatments are used in the vineyards), and one of the most distinctive, it is also clean and beautiful. This 'pink table wine,' as the back label reads, is closer to a light red than a rosé. Though the finish has some thickness to it, the wine is bursting with basil, rosemary, and raspberry, balanced with a touch of earth. Enough acidity to keep it light on its feet, too. Try serving it quite cold, with charcuterie, and with a group of friends eager to experience one of the most uniquely pleasing rosés in existence. (Beware - No added sulfur!) JK

Cornelissen, Frank 2013 Etna Rosato Susucaru 6

It's back and better than ever! Watching the evolution of the wines at Cornelissen has been delicious and exciting, and we're happy to report that the 2013s have great freshness with much lower alcohol than the heavy-hitting 2012s. Susucaru is predominately Nerello Mascalese with a bit of Cattaratto and Malvasia, and has a brilliant psychedelic watermelon-red color. The wine has beautiful aromatic character reminiscent of rosewater and grapefruit skin. There's wonderful fruit, and also a subtle structure of fine tannins on the finish -- pair with delicious fresh tomatoes, lightly seared tuna, or serve on its own on a hot summer's night. JR

Foti 2012 IGT Sicilia I Vigneri Vinudilice

Perched 1200 meters up on Etna's volcanic slope, the Vigna Bosco vineyard is filled with many centenarian vines of a mix of varieties. The vines here represent Etna's -- and Sicily's -- vinous history: Spaniards brought Grenache (locally known as Alicante), the white-skinned Grecanico from Greece, and assorted varieties known as "Francisi" because of their probable French origin. The team at I Vigniri are careful not to disturb the unique DNA of their antique vines, so a mule is employed to move between the head-trained vines to avoid toppling them. All of this would mean little if the wine wasn't delicious -- luckily, it is! The recently tasted 2012 vintage has great citrus fruit, and a fuller bodied mid-palate. This isn't the driest wine, and fans of steely Provence style wines might find the richness overwhelming, but this would be great with a pesto sauce, aged cheeses, or gamier meats. JR

Monte Bernardi 2012 Colli della Toscana Centrale Rosato

Rosato for the grill! Panzano is a picturesque Tuscan town in the heart of the Chianti Classico region’s rolling hills. It’s also home to the famous butcher Dario Cecchini and the fantastic Monte Bernardi estate, so it seems appropriate to pair your summertime burgers and steaks with a refreshing, but substantial, Rosato of Sangiovese from the region.  The Monte Bernardi 2012 Rosato is not a salmon-colored poolside sipper, but rather a very savory, complex, drink with flavors of salt, stone, earth, and a touch of sour-cherry fruit. The grapes used were grown biodynamically, and the winemaking is traditional: long ferments using native yeasts, aging in large, old barrels, and minimal addition of sulfur.  JR

Bonavita 2013 Terre Siciliane Rosato

Giovanni Scarfone tends to his family’s vines overlooking the strait of Messina -between Sicily and Calabria- the historic home of Faro, a blend of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and the local star Nocera.  Faro is usually a fairly powerful wine that can reward a bit of cellaring, but for something fresh to drink with lighter foods Giovanni makes a tiny amount of Rosato every year.  The grapes enjoy up to thirty hours of maceration; the result is an intense wine with dark crimson color and deep strawberry fruit that speaks of Sicily’s Mediterranean coastal climates.  Last summer I had a bottle with seared tuna and a fresh tomato salad... amazing! Les Fouques 2013 Côtes de Provence l'Aubigue Rosé

2013 was an excellent vintage in the South of France and this younger brother of the Les Fouques Cuvée La Londe is a beautiful rosé at a bargain price! Lovely light salmon color. Subtle and complex aromas (thanks to biodynamic farming and wild yeast fermentation) with yellow and red fruits, citrus, and floral notes. The palate is full, but balanced and refreshing—a great apéritif and pairs with any light summer foods. DL

Les Fouques 2013 Côtes de Provence La Londe Rosé

Domaine les Fouques has been has been certified Biodynamic (Demeter) for 20 years, and also raise sheep, ducks, chickens and guinea-hens on their old-fashioned mixed-use farm. La Londe is their best rosé from old vines of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Rolle. Unlike the majority of Provencal rosés, it is made naturally with wild yeasts, giving a more subtle expression of fruit and terroir. The 2013 La Londe is a beautifully complex rosé showing aromas of citrus, melon and peach with floral and spicy hints. Elegant and balanced on the palate, this is simply delicious and will gain in weight and complexity over the next few years. This is one of the greatest rosés of Provence and a superb value! DL

Sulauze 2013 Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Pomponette Rosé

This is a super rosé from the following blend: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Rolle. It's pale, salmon-colored in the glass, delicate, with citrus and berry notes, racy acidity, and the kind of silken texture one associates with the most delicious southern French rosés — for the third season in a row, it's ethereal, fresh, and a favorite amongst our staff and customers. The wine is made by a husband and wife winemaking team who purchased the Domaine in 2004 and began systematically converting it to organic viticulture. We love stories like this! Once again, it's a wine I'll be drinking all summer long. MSB

Zerberos 2011 Valle del Alberche Kapi Garnacha Rosé

This bold and exciting 100% Garnacha rose from the talented Daniel Ramos of Zerberos makes us misty for López de Heredia's deliberately oxidative rosado. Full-bodied and showing a good bit of development (2011 is the current release) on the warm and spicy nose of hibiscus, clove, and black cherry compote. The palate shows great depth, freshness, and potential for interesting food pairings—musky ripe raspberry, red apple skins, cinnamon sticks, and that López-esque coppery twinge. An interesting choice for carpaccios, richer fish, seafood stews, grilled steaks on the rare side, and soft, earthy cheese. AR

Raffault, Olga 2014 Chinon Rosé

The Olga Raffault Chinon rosé has gotten better and better over the past few years, perhaps it's their move towards organic farming and the fine work of Sylvie Raffault and her husband Eric de la Vigerie. 100% Cabernet Franc, 10-hour maceration and slow fermentation. Lovely bright pink color, hints of raspberry and strawberry fruit, very dry and balanced on the palate with a bit of peach and red berries in the finish with crisp saline acidity. "Particulièrement gouleyant" it says on the label and we couldn't agree more!
