Domaine Francois Pinon

Partners with Pinon: An Historic Offering from the Pinon Family!

Share

On the morning of June 17th, 2013, a horrible hail storm slashed through Vouvray, especially the vineyards around Vernou and Vallée de Cousse, home of our friend Francios Pinon. 85% of his crop was lost, and this came after a very small 2012 vintage that produced almost nothing except Pétillant. Many of us had the idea of helping the Pinons through this difficult period, so in conjunction with Louis/Dressner Selections and David Bowler wines, we are offering a unique six-pack of wines from the Pinon cellar, with 100% of the price, less credit card fees, going directly to the Pinon family. View the complete offer in PDF here. Mid-September arrival.

I remember walking down the hill from the Ferme des Landes in Vallée de Cousse in 1981, with a one-year-old on my shoulders, to see if we could taste some Vouvray at the Pinons. We were greeted warmly by Francois' parents and offered a glass of 1959 moelleux, which led to a magical afternoon. Many years later, after Francois had returned from Tours to take over the estate, Joe Dressner and I began importing Francois' wine, first for Garnet Wines and then for a few other retail and restaurant accounts. 1996 was a great vintage for the Pinons and Louis/Dressner Selections began distributing these beautiful wines to other states, leading to American recognition for Francois Pinon as one of the great producers of Vouvray. His outstanding organic vineyard work and superb vinifications make all his wines, from Sec to Cuvée Botrytis, excellent choises for current drinking or long-term cellaring. Francois is a great friend and as his retirement nears, we are proud to take part in this effort to help his family continue to operate this wonderful estate. We are adding a few other current offerings from Domaine Francois Pinon which we hope you will consider. DL

Pinon, François 2008 Vouvray Moelleux

My notes from tasting this wine in February 2014 were very simple - "Absolutely terrific!" The wine has gorgeous aromatics, beautiful fruit on the palate, just the right amount of residual sugar and fabulous acidity making it a perfect accompaniment to cheeses or light desserts, certain fish dishes or just sipped happily by itself. (Recently praised by Pete Wells of the NY Times in his review of Racines NY)

Pinon, François NV (2010) Touraine Brut Rosé

Made from Grolleau and Côt (Malbec) this superb sparkling wine has beautiful deep pink color, lovely high-toned red-currant/strawberry aromas, and a palate of citrusy ripe berry fruits with earth and spice—really delicious! François Pinon is one of the great winemakers of the Loire Valley, doing fabulous organic farming in the vineyards and precise work in the cellar, and his wines are very reasonably priced! Thank you, François! DL

Pinon, François NV Vouvray Brut Non-Dosé (2011)

François Pinon's Vouvray Brut Non-Dosé is one of the finest non-Champagne sparkling wines you can find. Beautifully complex aromas of citrus, honey, herbs and earth, a creamy palate with great acidity and length. François' sparkling wines age beautifully and are better than many Champagnes at twice the price! DL

A great version of Pinon's cuvée Botrytis, the 2005 has wonderful lemon confit, herbal and tea leaf aromas, and lovely stone and citrus flavors on the palate. Very long and quite sweet, superb! (10.7 alcohol, 152 gr/L RS)

Pinon 2011 Vouvray Les Trois Argiles

The delicious 2010 Vouvray Les Trois Argiles is a hard act to follow, but Francois likes the 2011 vintage very much. Despite a difficult growing season, he got both good ripeness and good acidity from his beautifully maintained organic vineyards. The clay topsoils over limestone give a less aromatic wine than his Silex Noir, but the Trois Argiles has subtle honeyed white fruit aromas with almond, citrus and floral notes. The palate is dense, stony and elegant with pear, candied citrus, stone, herbal and caramel flavors with terrific length. Delicious now, it will be best after three to five years of cellaring, and if recent tastings of his wines from the 1950s would indicate, it's capable of long-term aging as well.
