Morey Saint-Denis

The Lovely 2012 Burgundies of Stéphane Magnien!

Share

We've been looking forward to the 2012s from the young and talented Stéphane Magnien, and indeed the wines are superb with pure, bright fruit aromas, moderate alcohol, lovely terroir expression on the palate and great potential for medium to long term cellaring! Stéphane is the fourth generation in his family at this four hectare estate in Morey Saint-Denis. The domain has never used herbicides, doing a deep plowing to aerate the soil each winter, and using only organic composts. There is a high percentage of old vines, including a great deal of "Pinot Tordu," a small-berried, aromatic old clone of Pinot. Minimal new oak is used, about 15% for the premier and grand cru wines, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Hand harvesting, of course, and long, wild-yeast fermentations with gentle extraction giving relatively light, very elegant old-fashioned Burgundies. We love the style of this estate and we find the wines particularly attractive in 2012 - elegant and ethereal with gorgeous aromatics for immediate enjoyment and with enough depth and structure for graceful aging.

Allocations are down and prices are up, as is to be expected in this low-yielding vintage. Only the village Morey Saint-Denis has good availability. The wines are in stock and will be stored at 55 degrees until shipping, all wines discount 10% in a purchase of 12 bottles or more made within one business day.

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain Cuvée Densité

This is a great Bourgogne Passetoutgrain from the young and very capable Stephane Magnien, whose great vineyard work and un-forced vinifications are producing superb, elegant Burgundies. The 2012 Cuvée Densité is from older vines of Pinot Noir and Gamay and gets a longer élevage than his "regular" Passetoutgrain. The palate is round and elegant with cherry and strawberry compote but it's well-balanced and refreshing with nice finishing acidity—really a lovely everyday Burgundy at a great price! Serve cool and enjoy.

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Morey-Saint-Denis

The young Stephane Magnien is becoming widely known for his elegant, unforced, old-fashioned Burgundies and his delicious "village" Morey-Saint-Denis is an outstanding value. High-toned aromas of raspberry, tart cherry, violet and blood orange with lovely depth and persistence. The palate is medium-bodied with a mineral center, really showing the terroir followed by earthy black fruits and saline acidity that continue on the long stony finish. This may lack the weight of the superb 2010, but the bright subtle fruit and great terroir-expression make this an excellent choice as well. Lovely now, best in five to ten years.

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vignes

Old vines cuvée from the lieu-dit "Les Athets" on flat-ish ground near the D974, cultivated by the Magniens for four generations. From soils composed of light topsoil (not clay) and 30-40 cm of deep rubble. Somewhat dark ruby in color. There is a hint of reduction here. With air the nose shows darker red fruits with subtle hints of underbrush and black tea. The palate is medium-bodied, showing ripe pomegranate, red currant, and Morello cherry, framed by fresh acidity and stony, mineral definition. The finish is savory and long. There is plenty of structure here for medium to long-term aging in this harmonious, albeit somewhat muscular Chambolle-Musigny. JCM

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée "Aux Petites Noix"

From mixed limestone and clay soils in premier crus Clos Baulet and Les Gruenchers, which bracket Clos Sorbe beneath the village of Morey-Saint-Denis. Another lovely wine from Stephane Magnien. Ruby in color and medium-bodied. This is quite perfumed immediately upon opening; red fruits and flowers dominate. Wild strawberry, red plums, dried rose aromas are followed by hints of bergamot and spices. The energetic palate balances ripeness and structure. There is lovely rich fruit here with offsetting earthiness. The dry extract and ripeness buffer ripe tannins and there is a beautiful purity of fruit. The finish is long and complex with discreet oak. Enjoyable now, but should become lovely with a few years in the cellar. JCM

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers

This is a superb "Sentiers" showing similarly to the 2010 with a bit more aromatic brightness and acidity. Elegant high-toned aromas of wild-strawberry, violet, cherry, graphite, thyme and stone. Intense palate with bright acidity with velvety, chalky texture. Black cherry, citrus, brown spice and earth with fabulous length and mineral notes lingering long on the palate. A beautiful wine that can be enjoyed immensely now, best in five to twenty years...

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Bourgogne Aligoté

This is a bracing, rocky, earthy Aligoté with a Muscadet-like nose of seashells and lime pith. It's full-textured, but very low in alcohol (11.5%), as though all the wine's texture on the palate comes from mineral. Smoky, saline, and briny, the wine is arrestingly crisp and high acid. The wine is intensely limey on the palate, and opens up nicely over a day in the fridge. Drink this with oysters! MSB
