An Evening with Steve Matthiasson! Thursday, October 23rd at Blue Ribbon Brooklyn.

Lovers of American wine and followers of the "New California" movement require no introduction to the work of Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson. The Napa-based husband and wife team met twenty years ago through their shared work in sustainable agriculture, a partnership that has resulted in some of the most fascinating, fresh, and diverse wines made in California today. Steve's career evolved behind the scenes as a vineyard consultant for high profile Napa wineries like Stag's Leap, Spottswoode, and Araujo. Jon Bonné, wine editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and vocal champion of Matthiasson's wines, notes that "when a vintner wants more flavor at lower sugar levels, Matthiasson is the one on speed dial. And he has achieved that while evangelizing for a reversal of the past two decades' trend toward overly ripe flavors and high alcohols."

The Matthiassons' vivid renditions of ubiquitous varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon provide an appealing introduction to their poised and textured house style. Their impeccably farmed organic vineyards, luscious, complicated White Wine, and pure, focused Refosco (that Steve grafted over 3 rows of Merlot in their home vineyard following a eye-opening trip to Friuli) exemplify the high standards and spirit of adventure that California is becoming known for among engaged and eco-conscious wine drinkers.

For those who would like to meet Steve in person and raise a glass (or six, in this case), we are thrilled to announce a special dinner at Blue Ribbon Brooklyn on Thursday, October 23rd at 6:30pm. Chef Martin Brock's glorious six-course menu is below, constructed to bring out the best of Matthiasson's recent and upcoming releases, in addition to two of our favorite sold-out cuvées (Matthiasson's 2007 Napa Valley Red Wine and addictive 2011 Yount Mill Vineyard Vermouth, made from the obscure hybrid grape Flora), courtesy of Blue Ribbon Wine Director Sam Ehrlich's extensive cellar. Blue Ribbon Brooklyn is located in Park Slope at 280 5th Avenue (on the corner of 1st Street) Brooklyn, NY 11215. Featured wines and tickets to dinner are available for purchase below. We hope to see you there! Ariana Rolich

Matthiasson 2012 Napa Valley White Wine

This is an ambitious wine, created to express Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson's 'new-world conception of a mythical ideal old-world wine…a California wine with a spiritual connection to Friuli, Italy, but also drawing inspiration from the great whites of the Loire, Burgundy, Graves, Alsace, the Rhône, old-school Napa... This wine is an attempt at getting at the core of what white wine is all about, the archetypal “white wine,” thus the name.' And indeed it offers a little bit of everything, a co-ferment (in 20% new barrels) of Sauvignon Blanc (59%) and Sémillon (16%) from Ryans Vineyard in the south of Napa with Ribolla Gialla (20%) and Tocai Friulano (5%) from Vare Vineyard at the mouth of Napa's Dry Creek canyon. Rich and racy, with subtle, spicy aromas of beeswax, bitter orange, and peach skins, with flavors of deep, gilded apricot, bitter melon, almond oil, and zesty tropical fruit — guava, pineapple, and creamy lime curd. The vibrant acidic and mineral core is equal parts grounding and mouth-watering. We can't wait to drink this from magnum! Ariana Rolich

Matthiasson 2013 Napa Valley Chardonnay Linda Vista Vineyard

Steve Matthiasson's work as a consultant in Napa has allowed him to see some of the county's most interesting vineyards. The Linda Vista vineyard is a perfect example; it was planted to Chardonnay in the 1960s because the plot was thought to be too cool to support red wine varieties. Now its clay soils produce grapes capable of sheer minerality and steely-fresh acids, so much acid in fact that for the 2013 crop Steve allowed malolactic fermentations in two-fifths of his barrels in order to temper the electric vintage. We continue to be impressed by the poise, detail, and unabashed deliciousness of Steve's wines — give them a try! John Rankin

Matthiasson 2012 Napa Valley Refosco

One of America’s only Refoscos! Steve Matthiasson has a long-held belief that his vineyards in Napa are perfectly suited for growing grape varieties from northeastern Italy’s Friuli region. Refosco is a classic red wine grape that is valued for its peppery fruit and mineral finish, which this wine has in spades (despite being planted over 5,000 miles away from its ancestral home). There are just three rows of Refosco in the Matthiassons' organically farmed home vineyard. The wine is fermented in steel and aged in neutral oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Matthiasson 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

With a production of just 143 cases, Matthiasson's Cabernet Sauvignon is a rare and delicious treat. 80% Cabernet from three Napa Vineyards that Steve Matthiasson works closely with and 20% Merlot from the Matthiassons' home vineyard, this wine is made in a decidedly “old-school” fashion — no new oak, long and slow fermentation, and no over-extraction. The result is a complex and elegant wine that is enjoyable now for its fresh berry fruit, but also has a soft, tannic structure that will unfold for years and years to come. John Rankin
