New Arrivals from Julien Guillot at Clos des Vignes du Maynes!

Share

We've just received a small additional shipment of the 2012 vintage from the dynamic Julien Guillot, as well as his beautful sparkling wines and a small allocation of the wonderful 2013 Cuvée 910! The vineyards of the Clos des Vignes du Maynes belonged to the Abbey of Cluny and date back to at least 900 AD and it is the oldest practicing organic vineyard in France. Acquired by Julien's grandfather in 1954 and immediately tended with organic methods, the vines have never been treated with modern pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. The living soils here produce wines with vibrant fruit and distinctive, complex minerality. The red grapes undergo a nine-day true carbonic maceration with the subsequent alcoholic fermentation lasting about fifteen days with pigeage by foot. Whites are pressed slowly in a wooden pressoir from 1865. Aging is sur lie in old barriques, usually without additives for the reds and with a minimal (10 – 20 mg/L) SO2 addition for the whites. "We have fifty years of experience in natural vinifications" says Julien, "and we pay careful attention of course to the right day and atmospheric pressure." The Cuvée 910, from a field blend of Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir, is made exactly as wines were made by the Abbey of Cluny in 910 AD and is a marvel of delicacy and finesse. The youthful M. Guillot, who had a lively career as actor and acrobat before returning to the family vineyards, is doing inspired work at the Domaine du Vignes du Maynes and we urge you to try his fascinating wines. (Most wines are in stock with additional  inventory arriving 10/22)

Vignes du Maynes 2012 Mâcon-Cruzille Manganite

Made from Gamay Petit Grains grown on a parcel high in magnesium, in the Clos des Vignes du Maynes in Cruzille, organic since 1954, now certified biodynamic. The energetic Julien Guillot vinifies his reds without sulfur or additives of any kind, producing complex, mineral, elegant wines that transcend their appellation. 2012 is a great vintage here, giving wines of firm acidity and great purity of fruit, although in tiny quantities. The 2012 Manganite shows slight reduction, then lovely strawberry/raspberry aromas with citrus, brown spice, violet and earth. Intense fruit on the palate, but light-bodied with red and black fruits, blood orange and soil, firm acidity and a long very mineral finish. This is a superb and not typical Gamay — a delicious living wine from living soils. Serve cool.

Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) 2013 Mâcon-Cruzille Rouge Cuvée 910

This special cuvée is a commemoration of eleven hundred years of winemaking, the vineyards in the Clos des Vignes du Maynes having been planted around AD 900 and wine first produced for the Abbey of Cluny around 910. This "medieval" wine is a field blend of Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir, including the old varieties Gamay Petit Grain and Pinot Fin. The grapes were transported in carts pulled by Charolais bulls, then pressed by foot, vinified and aged without sulfur and bottled by hand in the spring. The 2013 is a pretty pale red color with aromas of raspberry and violets, blood orange and earth, quite lovely. The palate is light and silky with raspberry and tart cherry fruit with a hint of spice. Very refreshing, with juicy acids and good length. Very "gouleyant," serve cool and quaf!

Vignes du Maynes 2012 Mâcon-Cruzille Blanc

This is a complex bottle of Chardonnay combining ripeness with firm acidity and great mineral expression, definitely not "typical" of the Mâcon. Aromas of citrus, pear, dried herbs, stone and exotic fruit. Honeyed citrus peel, white fruits and saline acidity on the palate with pear, citrus and mineral lingering on the finish. A beautiful wine from the living soils at the Clos des Vignes du Maynes, Biodynamic farming, minimal SO2.

Vignes du Maynes 2012 Mâcon-Cruzille Aragonite 1.5 L

Julien Guillot's Aragonite is a great and rare bottle of white burgundy. From 40 to 80 year-old vines high on the slope, on soils with clay, crystallized limestone, rich in minerals. The aromas are very subtle and expressive of the wines firm acidity. Citrus peel and stony flavors on the palate with saline acids and hints of white fruits. Left alone for a few days the wine softens, with exotic fruit flavors emerging but still subtle and balanced. Fabulous wine. Decant for best current drinking or keep open, re-corked, for a few days.

Vignes du Maynes 2012 Mâcon-Cruzille Les Chassagnes 1.5 L

A great terroir, never chemically treated and worked in biodynamic farming by Alain and Julien Guillot. Yields of 18 hl/ha, giving a racy, stony wine with hints of white fruits, spice and honey, the palate is all mineral with subtle citrus and white fruits, very long and elegant. Only 30 bottles available — highly recommended!

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Brut Rosé

2011 Vignes du Maynes Brut Rosé is riper than the past two vintages of this wine. It's a bit deeper in color with more overt cherry and strawberry Pinot fruit. The earthy and iron-y notes on the nose remain; it's an extremely mineral wine with cranberry, cherry cordial, hibiscus, rosehip, tea leaves, and fruit seeds. Mostly Pinot with a touch of Gamay, there's a tiny bit of funk upon first opening, but nothing excessive. The fruits are pure and the wine takes on more irony depth the longer it's open. Terrific length. Easy and delicious, generous and satisfying, but by no means insubstantial. (No added sulfur) -Sophie Barrett

Vignes du Maynes 2002 Crémant de Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Ex Brut

Nine years on the lees! We are surprised and delighted at how Champagne-like this wine is, while retaining rich, generous, earthy Mâcon character. On the nose it shows umami notes: oyster mushroom, and a toasty, very lightly oxidative nuttiness. The palate is quite round and supple and the wine has clearly fleshed out and broadened with time the way that long lees-aged Champagnes do. The bubbles are lively and present. Given the prices of 2002 vintage Champagnes, we'd say this is a superb value! -msb
