27th Annual Chambers Street Thanksgiving Email!

Share

Thanksgiving — the wine lover's favorite holiday, when sharing our favorite bird-friendly wines with family, friends and neighbors heightens our enjoyment of this most convivial day! And what do we look for in a Thanksgiving wine? A full-bodied white that will not only complement turkey, but stand up to the cranberry sauce, stuffing and onions; rosés (yes, rosés are a great choice on Thanksgiving) that have a bit more fruit and terroir expression than those we gulp in the summer; and reds that are relatively light and low in alcohol, supple with pretty fruit that won't overwhelm the mild flavors of turkey, turnips and mashed potatoes. And of course a sparkling wine or Champagne to begin or end our feast, and dessert wines that will shine with pumpkin, apple and mince pies, walnuts and cheeses.

Our Thanksgiving picks are designed to please everyone at the table, from novice to Master of Wine, and to fit every budget as well. Have fun perusing our list and please call or email with any questions or for further recommendations. (Sorry, it's a bit too long — sparkling wines, followed by roses, reds, whites and dessert.)

And while we pause to give thanks for the health and happiness of family and friends, lets think for a moment of those less fortunate than ourselves. One way to do that is by donating to your favorite charity. For CSW that means Partners-in-Health. We'll match our customers total donations to PIH, up to $1,000, made between now and Thanksgiving, just let us know the amount of your gift. https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/donate

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Chambers Street!

Pellehaut 1989 Armagnac Ténarèze Ugni Blanc

This Armagnac shows a vibrant orange color with hints of caramel. Tastes mature, but even after 24 years in cask there is a grippy quality and some citrus-toned fruit. This is an excellent introduction to vintage Armagnac and a fabulous value.  John Rankin

Camut Pommeau de Domaine de Semainville Apéritif Normand

Looking for something new to try before or after your dinner? How about a Pommeau? Pommeau is the traditional blend of Calvados and unfermented apple cider that hardly ever makes its way out of Normandy. Very similar to Cognac’s Pineau des Charentes, Pommeau combines the fruity unfermented apple sugars spiked with a touch of aged brandy. In the fall it makes a wonderful apéritif, but for those afraid of sugary pre-dinner drinks, it would be delicious with cheese, and out-of-this-world with deserts featuring apples. Camut makes what is likely the best Calvados in the grand Cru “Pays d’Auge,” so it’s no surprise that their Pommeau is the best we have ever tasted.  John Rankin

Bermejos 2012 Lanzarote Malvasia Espumoso

100% Malvasía from Lanzarote (the eastern-most of the Canary Islands) made to sparkle via Méthode Champenoise, with 9 months on the lees. Complex and fascinating, with a pretty, spicy nose of orange blossoms, chamomile, marzipan, baked peach, purple flowers and clove; a dry, rich, complex palate of beeswax, buckwheat honey, blood orange, apricot, pink grapefruit, bitter almond, and a kiss of smokey minerality, courtesy of volcanic soils. Bold, bright, and nuanced. A great surprise for lovers of Champagne and offbeat sparklers. Ariana Rolich

Piollot NV Extra Brut Réserve Polisot

This is such a fresh and delicious value Champagne from Roland Piollot in Polisot (Côte des Bars). The blend is 50/40/10 Pinot/Chardonnay/Meunier, raised in stainless steel with native yeast and bottled Extra Brut. Of course for fans of the Marie-Courtin Champagnes, this is a natural fit, but it's a delicious bottle in its own right regardless of the relationship to Marie-Courtin (Dominique Moreau, winemaker at Marie-Courtin, is married to Roland Piollot and has a hand in the winemaking at Piollot). The nose offers delicate orchard fruits, pear, apple, etc... along with a hint of candied citrus peel and white flower. The palate is suave, finely textured, well-balanced, zesty but far from austere for an Extra Brut. Simply unbeatable... especially for the price. Take our advice and stock up on these fantastic value bubbles for the holidays. (Based on the 2009 and 2010 vintages; disgorged March 2013). MSB

Tissot, Stephane NV Crémant du Jura Indigène

This is a vinous Crémant du Jura that shows a touch of the sweetness of the vin de paille used for the second fermentation. The wine offers notes of apple and fresh grass on the nose along with the honeyed, herbal tea-like quality of Macvin du Jura. Give the wine some time open as it can be a touch reductive at first. Made from a blend of 55% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, and the rest Trousseau and Poulsard. More serious than the average Crémant, this wine will open up over the course of a meal and will complement roast chicken and richer fish dishes. Take note of the finish, which is long, nuanced, and satisfying. –Sophie Barrett

Vignes du Maynes 2011 Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Brut Rosé

2011 Vignes du Maynes Brut Rosé is riper than the past two vintages of this wine. It's a bit deeper in color with more overt cherry and strawberry Pinot fruit. The earthy and iron-y notes on the nose remain; it's an extremely mineral wine with cranberry, cherry cordial, hibiscus, rosehip, tea leaves, and fruit seeds. Mostly Pinot with a touch of Gamay, there's a tiny bit of funk upon first opening, but nothing excessive. The fruits are pure and the wine takes on more irony depth the longer it's open. Terrific length. Easy and delicious, generous and satisfying, but by no means insubstantial. (No added sulfur) -Sophie Barrett

The Bartucci Bugey Cerdon is superb in 2015! Beautiful color, lovely aromas of small berries and flowers, gorgeous fruit on the palate. Rovero 2013 Brachetto d'Asti

Brachetto is a local red grape in the area around Asti in Piedmont, and its best expression is in making a lightly sweet and fruity sparkling wine, that’s much more delicate and easy-drinking than say, Lambrusco, which of course is much more famous. We love Rovero’s Brachetto, which has plenty of flavor intensity without feeling strained or over-extracted. It has lovely aromas of raspberry, cranberry, and baking spices; unlike most Brachetto it actually has some complexity. It’s one of those wines that will disappear from your glass before you know it. This wine will enable you to treat guests who think they only like sweeter wines to something new and delicious, but something you can enjoy too. Jamie Wolff

Monte Bernardi 2012 Colli della Toscana Centrale Rosato

Rosato for the grill! Panzano is a picturesque Tuscan town in the heart of the Chianti Classico region’s rolling hills. It’s also home to the famous butcher Dario Cecchini and the fantastic Monte Bernardi estate, so it seems appropriate to pair your summertime burgers and steaks with a refreshing, but substantial, Rosato of Sangiovese from the region.  The Monte Bernardi 2012 Rosato is not a salmon-colored poolside sipper, but rather a very savory, complex, drink with flavors of salt, stone, earth, and a touch of sour-cherry fruit. The grapes used were grown biodynamically, and the winemaking is traditional: long ferments using native yeasts, aging in large, old barrels, and minimal addition of sulfur.  JR

Laguerre 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Rosé

Another delicious wine from the affable and talented Eric Laguerre, from organic Syrah and Carignan grown on granite soils high in the mountains of the Roussillon. Lovely deep pink/red color, aromas of raspberry, red currant, brown spice and orange blossom. Beautiful bright red fruits on the palate with citrusy acids and good length, really delicious! A complex, medium-bodied rosé that will be perfect with a Salade Niçoise, grilled fish, chicken and pork and great to sip by itself. Showing beautifully in April of 2015 and will drink well all summer. Highly recommended!

Les Fouques 2013 Côtes de Provence La Londe Rosé

Domaine les Fouques has been has been certified Biodynamic (Demeter) for 20 years, and also raise sheep, ducks, chickens and guinea-hens on their old-fashioned mixed-use farm. La Londe is their best rosé from old vines of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Rolle. Unlike the majority of Provencal rosés, it is made naturally with wild yeasts, giving a more subtle expression of fruit and terroir. The 2013 La Londe is a beautifully complex rosé showing aromas of citrus, melon and peach with floral and spicy hints. Elegant and balanced on the palate, this is simply delicious and will gain in weight and complexity over the next few years. This is one of the greatest rosés of Provence and a superb value! DL

COS 2012 IGT Sicilia Pithos

Here we have Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato, that has been fermented in buried clay amphora. The result is a fresh wine with spicy cranberry character and shows best with a slight chill. One could certainly point to COS as the first of the Sicily’s new class of high quality organic estates. Although the wines may have been a bit oaky or heavy some years ago, the amphora wines show off the new, more elegant style. Pithos is perhaps the best example of the new direction at COS. JR

Vino di Anna 2012 Vino da Tavola Palmento (Etna)

A few years ago Anna Martens joined the ranks of the best winemakers on Etna, making terroir-true wines — pure, unadulterated expressions of Nerello Mascalese and of the land. A palmento is a traditional wine cellar with stone troughs for crushing grapes by foot, and this new bottling was made in the old style. The fruit comes from high elevation, old bush vines; it’s classic Etna but more graceful, lighter, and more energetic than most of the wines from the mountain. With its bright fresh, cranberry-like fruit, it will be great at Thanksgiving. Jamie Wolff

Bart 2012 Marsannay Les Echezots

From 30 year-old vines in the lower part of Echezots, a windy spot. Aged in used large and small barrels. Usually one of the lighter, brighter Marsannays from Martin Bart, the 2012 Les Echezots is insanely delicious! Intense aromas of ripe red currant and strawberry confit lead to a palate that is round and supple with dense red fruits, citrus and earth — just lovely with soft tannins and good acidity. Earthy red/black fruits linger in the finish. Serve cool, drink over the next five years.

Magnien, Stephane 2012 Morey-Saint-Denis

The young Stephane Magnien is becoming widely known for his elegant, unforced, old-fashioned Burgundies and his delicious "village" Morey-Saint-Denis is an outstanding value. High-toned aromas of raspberry, tart cherry, violet and blood orange with lovely depth and persistence. The palate is medium-bodied with a mineral center, really showing the terroir followed by earthy black fruits and saline acidity that continue on the long stony finish. This may lack the weight of the superb 2010, but the bright subtle fruit and great terroir-expression make this an excellent choice as well. Lovely now, best in five to ten years.

Barou 2013 Vin de Pays Syrah Cuvee des Vernes

From 40 year-old Syrah vines in Charnay, just outside the Saint-Joseph AOC, on living soils tended organically for forty years by Marie-Agnès and Emmanuel Barou. Plowing by tractor or weeding by hand on the steep slopes. Hand-harvested, wild-yeast fermentations, aging one year in 4 to 5 year-old barrels. The 2013 "Vernes" shows raspberry and blueberry fruit with hints of musk, violet, citrus and spice, really pretty and fresh. Black and red fruits on the palate with pepper, smoke and saline minerals with bright acidity in the finish. Really a delicious Syrah showing the granite soils and great farming — enjoy now, served cool or wait 3 to 5 years. After a few days in the fridge, re-corked, the wine is softer, quite pretty and shows lovely ripe fruit on the finish — this wine is a sensational value!

Rousset 2012 Crozes-Hermitage Les Picaudières

Certainly one of the best sites in Crozes-Hermitage, "les Picaudières" is a steep, south-facing granite hill with high-density old vines, formerly owned by the legendary Raymond Roure. The 2012 "Les Picaudières" from Robert and Stephane Rousset reflects the qualities of this excellent vintage in the Northern Rhône with bright fruit, medium-body and good underlying acidity and mineral character. Elegant aromas of high-toned red and black fruit liqueur with dusty stone, game and bitter chocolate. Cool, smooth-textured black fruit on the palate with citrusy acids, berry fruit and stone in the very long finish. Great now, if a bit intense, best 2017 to 2025. This is an old-fashioned wine of terroir that is more Hermitage than Crozes; bravo to the Roussets!

Coutet 2010 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

2010 is a great vintage for this excellent organic estate in Saint-Emilion, possessing great parcels on three different soils, abutting Angelus, Beausejour-Bécot and Beausejour-Duffau. Coutet has never used herbicides or pesticides and is one of the few Saint-Émilion estates with real biodiversity in the vineyard. The 2010 Coutet has lovely red-currant and blackberry aromas — really pretty —  the palate is earthy and elegant with herbal red and black fruits supported by refreshing acidity. The finish is long and lovely and structured for long aging, even though it's quite delicious now. Highly recommended and a great value at the price!

As Furnias NV Galicia Vino Tinto

This is the kind of wine that catches our attention on paper: a renegade "non-vintage" (2012) blend of obscure, local Galician red grapes Brancellao, Caiño Longo, Caiño da Terra, Sousón and Espadeiro, farmed without chemicals and fermented with native yeasts, with the bare minimum of SO2. The wine lives up to its fascinating description. It is fresh and delicious, with herb- and flower-inflected purple berry fruit, gentle baking spice, and a hint of cedar. A delicious change of pace for Mencia lovers, best served with a light chill. Knauss 2013 Württemberg Trollinger 1 Liter

Trollinger is known as Schiava or Vernaccia Rosso in Italy. The light, refreshing Swabian version done here by Andi Knauss is similarly not a tannic wine, but it has an irresistible verve and energy not unlike Poulsard that sets it apart from its Italian cousins. This vintage is the best we've tasted yet, with remarkable purity, pleasing, high-toned cherry fruit, and cleansing acidity. Thank goodness this is a 1-liter bottle. It always gets guzzled. Brick House 2012 Ribbon Ridge Gamay Noir Year of the Dragon

Brick House's Doug Tunnell is inspired by Cru Beaujolais and it shows! This is a grand and gushing Gamay, befitting a feast, from certified organic (since 1990) and biodynamically farmed vines on the marine sediment soils of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge. Tunnell is keen to point out that his vineyards "share much in common with the rolling hills of Beaujolais. We share a low, somewhat acidic soil pH and abundance of mica/silica. Our growing season temperatures routinely run warmer that those of the Golden Slope of Burgundy and much closer to those a little further south... in the warmer clime of Beaujolais." Complex herbal aromas with soft red berries, raspberry leaves, and warm brown spice are followed by a broad and juicy raspberry and red currant fruit with exceptionally vibrant acidity, taut young tannins, and satisfying richness and weight. Utterly delicious and highly recommended! Ariana Rolich

Buronfosse, Peggy and Jean-Pascal 2013 Côtes du Jura Éphémère 1.5 L

A MAGNUM of Pinot Noir and Poulsard from the Buronfosse family! They farm just 4 hectares of vines in the sleepy hamlet of La Combe below Rotalier, not far from Jean-Francois Ganevat, and have become known for their pure, clean, and compelling natural wines. Peggy and Jean-Pascal produce a miniscule amount of red wines at their domaine, so it’s always exciting when we see that it has arrived. Think lip-smacking, tart red cherries, a hint of red flowers, ample minerality, and a touch of Jurassic funk. This is a seriously gulpable and delicious wine!  Tim Gagnon

Lispida, Castello di 2012 Monselice Terralba

The Castello di Lispida is a sprawling estate dating back to the 1100s focusing on non-interventionist wine making. The Japanese farmer/philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka’s theory of “do-nothing agriculture” is Lispidia’s inspiration—the protocols are just as they sound: don’t touch the soil by hand or by chemical. The thinking is that all of the mineral and nutrient qualities of the land is already in balance and capable of self-regulation. (We first heard of this method from Eric Texier who follows this philosophy in a vineyard across from his cellar in Charnay.) The Terralba is a blend of Ribolla Gialla and Fruillano made of cuttings from Josko Gravner’s vineyards in Friuli. His wine making technique also influences the final product as the wine is a bright, golden color from a touch of skin contact. This is not a tannic beast of an orange wine though, the bright apricot and citrus flavors are a great match to lighter dishes and the wine shows its best with a slight chill.  John Rankin

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2012 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Houx

Marc Ollivier's Domaine de la Pépière always sets the standard for great values in Muscadet, but let's give a nod to our friend Jo Landron as well! His Domaine Louvetrie "Les Houx" (formerly labeled "Hermine D'Or") is from a great parcel of shallow sandy clay soils, rich with silica, quartz and iron, over a bedrock of gneiss and clay. A great terroir for Muscadet that always gives a dense, complex wine which benefits from medium-term aging. The 2012 is a great example and a sensational value. Lovely pale bronze color. A bit closed when first opened, then showing aromas of ripe pear, apple, lemon oil, a field in the sun, a hint of spice. The palate is dense with white fruits, stone, hay and citrus with perfect bracing acidity. Rather full-bodied for a Muscadet, this will accompany crab, lobster and monkfish as well as chicken, pork, Asian foods and goat cheeses. Or hold for a few years and serve with full-flavored fish dishes. Bravo, Jo Landron!

Lafouge 2012 Meursault Les Meix Chavaux

2012 was a vintage of very low yields, giving wines with excellent concentration and firm acidity. The Meursaults of Jean and Gilles Lafouge are among the best values in white Burgundy, though produced in tiny quantities. From eighty year-old vines, in mid-slope on thin well-drained clay/limestone soils, the 2012 Meix Chavaux has very complex lemon, lime and floral aromas. The palate is rich and ripe with white fruits and exotic citrus covering the chalky core, with firm acidity and mineral flavors in the finish. Serve with full-flavored fish dishes, poultry and white meats, mild cheeses. This is a beautiful young Meursault that is delicious now and over the next ten years.

Gonin 2013 Isère - Balmes Dauphinoises Blanc Classique

A new cuvee from Nicolas Gonin! A field blend of sorts consisting of Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Gris and Altesse from his finest parcels of vines planted in gravelly soils. Fermentation and aging occurs in enamel-lined tanks and Nicolas adds only the smallest amount of SO2 a few days before bottling. He finds that this way his wines are less reductive and much more expressive than if he adds during bottling. Mango, almond butter, and pineapple stalk comes to mind at first sniff, with sea-salty minerals lingering a bit deeper. It has nice weight and pronounced fruit on the palate, and is very well structured. This is truly an honest and delicious wine for the people! Tim Gagnon

Laguerre 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Blanc

Eric Laguerre's "Le Ciste," (named after a flowering bush in and around his vineyards) is certainly one of the most distinctive whites of the Roussillon. Grown in Eric's high-elevation vineyards on acidic soils of decomposed granite, the wine is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Yields are about 20 Hl/Ha, harvesting is by hand in small baskets, fermentation (wild yeasts) and aging is in small barrels. Complex aromas of lemon oil, thyme, hay and white fruits—a lovely melange with contributions from each variety. The plate is dense, stony and saline with herbal, citrus and white fruit flavors. The finish is long with mineral acids. Complex and distinctive as a young wine, this will be best with a few years of cellaring. Really a Grand Cru of the Roussillon and a great value! DL

Koehler-Ruprecht 2012 Pfalz Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling Kabinett

From the chalk and sandstone soils of Steinacker, this is a delicious, complex Kabinett that finished fermenting with just a touch of residual sugar, but has a brooding, dark, spicy character. The depth and mystery of this wine is also complemented by excellent cut and acidity. Overall, there is a fantastic mix of elements at play here—salty, savory, slightly sweet, fat, and rich. Frontón de Oro 2013 Gran Canaria Semi Seco

Soft-spoken brothers Pedro and Antonio Ramírez of Frontón de Oro on Gran Canaria are the team behind some of the most charming and rustic yet understated red wines coming out of the Canary Islands. Now we are thrilled to offer one of their whites! Bright, tart, and lightly sweet ("semi-seco"), this blend of Listan Blanco and Malvasia (from organically farmed vineyards upward of 1000 meters) has flavors of golden plum, tart, chewy golden plum skins, sweet crunchy pear, musky tropical notes, bitter agrumes, and spicy white pepper. The best part is getting to taste the combination of a dash of sweetness with the dark, ashy mineral and salty notes that permeate the white wines from these breathtaking, wind-swept volcanic islands. Ariana Rolich

Bordelet 2013 Sparkling Pear Cider Poiré Granit

Eric’s oldest heirloom pear trees (over 300 years old!) have vast roots that tap the soil’s granite deposits for a maximum blast of Norman minerality. As in his other ciders, fermentation continues in the bottle like the world’s finest sparkling wines, but this particular cuvée shows an incredibly refined bead, vinosity, and elegance that I’ve never tasted from apples or pears. There’s probably more than a little residual sugar floating around, but the impressive amount of dry, stony extract makes this bottle just as sophisticated a drink as most Champagnes. Granite is very highly recommended as an example of cider’s potential. John Rankin

The Bordelet pear and apple ciders are a big hit on Thanksgiving, low alcohol too, so the kids get a sip or two. Also arriving on Tuesday: Poire "Granit" and Poiré Authentique.

An apple cider from one of Normandy’s best, Tendre combines classic orchard flavors of ripe apples (Kermerien, Douce Moene, Frequin Rouge, Damelot, Marie Menard and 25 more) and a savory/sweet undercurrent of barley and dark honey. Compared to Bordelet’s pear offerings I find this to be more “beer-esque” than “wine-esque” so bring on the brats, or in true Norman fashion blood sausage, tripe, or perhaps for a lighter meal: crêpes. As with all his ciders, the farm is certified biodynamic and fermentation finishes in the bottle for a complex texture filled with small vivacious bubbles. John Rankin

Aaron Burr 2013/2014 Cider with Ginger and Carrot

Cider with carrot and ginger? The recipe for this cider might sound esoteric, but the result is delicious. Aromatically, one first notices the ginger's spicy presence alongside classic, fresh orchard character. Once sipped, a delicious flavor of earthy carrot emerges with a touch of herbs. Like all of the Aaron Burr ciders, the impression is more dry than sweet and more savory than fruit-focused. Perfect for the fall! John Rankin

Traginer 2006 Banyuls Grand Cru 500ml

Grenache, Grenache Gris and Carignan, aged for six years in ancient barrels, bottled without collage (fining) or filtration. High-toned red fruits, blood orange, brown spice, tobacco and cocoa aromas, really complex and lovely. Chalky red fruits, earth and cocoa with fresh acidity on the palate. Ripe and deep but fresh and light as well, really balanced and lovely. A wonderful aperitf and of course with fruit desserts and chocolate. Bravo to Domaine Traginer! DL

Lapuyade 2010 Jurançon Cuvée Marie-Louise

This is a superb Jurançon Moelleux, harvested in late December, about 85 grams/liter of residual sugar. Wonderfully complex aromas of apricot, candied citrus, flowers and exotic fruit with a hint of vanillin. Lemon confit, apricot, brown spice and chalky acids on the palate. A young wine that is gorgeous now but perhaps best in five to ten years. with more acidity than Sauternes, this is a great match for foie gras, lemon tarts and strong cheeses.
