Newly Arrived: An Assortment of French Wines

Share

While we are in the throes of winter, a collector friend has decided to do a bit of spring cleaning. We were happy to help out. Below are a number of Burgundies, with a smattering of Bordeaux, Rhône, Loire reds priced sharply and ready to drink! We're also delighted to have a number of magnums in this offer. We'd like to add that we have a recent data point for the Leoville Las Cases 1989; it is drinking sensationally at the moment.

Marchand, Pascal 2009 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines 1.5 L

With a not completely undeserved reputation for rusticity,Gevrey-Chambertin's premier cru Combe aux Moines, is famously a wine to be enjoyed during the hunting season of its tenth year, at which point its 'gamy richness' will mask its stern tannins per Jasper Morris. And while the wines are typically more masculine than refined, Pascal Marchand's 2009 Combe aux Moines belies its potential for sterness. Medium-bodied, with a light 'partridge-eye' color, the nose is floral and red-fruited veering to black, with spicebox, game, with just a wood present. On the palate, there are layers of dense red fruit and earth buffered by plenty of dry extract and framed by moderate tannins and lively acidity. This is really refined without sacrificing the essential earthiness of Gevrey-Chambertin. -John McIlwain

Voarick 2009 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi 1.5 L

The Burgundies of Michel Voarick are marvelously old-fashioned. The wines are fermented whole cluster, there are daily punchdowns and pump-overs, aging is in used oak barrels in very cold cellars with late bottling. These are full, sturdy vins de garde. The 2009 Corton Clos du Roi is initially a bit reticent aromatically, but blossoms to reveal black fruits, roasted meat, turned earth, and a touch of wood-smoke. On the full-bodied palate there is ripe concentrated fruit, savory minerality, and firm structure. With air more depth and complexity is revealed. Though fairly backwards at the moment, this should reward patient cellaring handsomely. John McIlwain
