Vallana Tasting and Dinner, March 11th, 2015

Share

There are a lot of exciting developments in Italian wine, and one of the most gratifying to us is the revival of Vallana, the great producer in Alto-Piemonte, making Spanna, Gattinara, and Boca. The new generation of the family (now called Fogarty-Vallana) is making fantastic wine again, and Vallana is still one of the very best producers in the region. You can read the very interesting history of Vallana on their website (www.vallanawines.com); one of our significant formative experiences of Italian wine was tasting (and drinking) Vallana from the 1950s and 1960s, and it’s a very happy event that Vallana is back on track. You can taste some current Vallana wines with us in the shop on Wednesday, March 11th with the expert guidance of Marina Forgarty-Vallana; then we will go to Lupa for dinner to drink an expanded range of the wines with Lupa’s great food, and we’ll add-in at least one historic vintage of Vallana.

Wednesday March 11th, 5 – 7pm tasting; Dinner at 7:30pm at Lupa (our favorite, by far, of the Batali Group restaurants); $170 includes dinner, wine, service, and tax.

Vallana 2010 Spanna cuvee Bernardo Vallana

A new bottling (with the very cool label used for the old Cantina del Camino) in honor of the founder of Vallana, this is a blend from Nebbiolo vines in Boca and Gattinara. We've been tasting a lot of wine from the region lately, and this really tastes like Vallana, with much more finesse than the competition. It's certainly drinking very young now and will repay some time in the cellar. JW

Vallana 2012 Vino Rosso Campo Raudii

For decades Vallana made by far the best wines in the Alto Piemonte. Happily things have improved in the region, but we have a soft spot for Vallana, and they are still making great wine. At our house we love Vallana Campi Raudii — we can have a little Nebbiolo thrill for a real week-night price. The wine is simply delicious! Jamie Wolff

A high-toned Nebbiolo-based wine from the venerable estate of Vallana in the northern mountains of Piemonte. This lightly earthy value contains trace amounts of the rare grapes Vespolina and Uva Rara and has racy acidity, bright cherry fruit notes and light tannins. An honest, everyday Nebbiolo that is refreshingly delicious now; no need to cellar, drink up! John Rankin
