Peciña, Hermanos de 2013 Rioja Blanco

In addition to outstanding red Riojas, Pecina makes this stunning dry white from two organically farmed parcels of Viura vines, ranging from 40 to 60 years old. It is raised entirely in stainless steel and is fresh and herbal, with lemon and lime zest flavors, citrus blossoms, and crisp stone fruit with rich almond, flecks of white pepper, and a long, honeyed finish. This is a favorite around my house with simply seared or broiled fish with lemon and garlic and a crunchy green salad. Ariana Rolich

Mengoba 2009 Bierzo Godello Sobre Lias

This is a deep and expressive wine from 30-40 year old Godello vines in the Northwestern Spanish region of  Bierzo.  Mengoba’s talented Gregory Perez ferments this wine with native yeasts and raises it for 11 months in large 4000L foudres on the lees (“sobre lias”).  A bold minerality dominates this medium-full bodied wine, with aromas of apricot, orange peel, chestnuts, and honey, and a palate of lime rinds, crunchy green apple, bitter almond, with cool salinity and impressive acidic cut. Celler Escoda Sanahuja 2013 Conca de Barbera Els Bassotets Macabeu, Sumoll Blanc

Winemaker Joan Ramon Escoda makes this fabulous. multi-dimensional orange wine from biodynamically farmed Macabeu (with a splash of Sumoll Blanc), fermented with native yeasts, 2 weeks on the skins, and bottled with no added sulfites... Sign us up! Deep savory, smoky, and spicy aromas give way to an exotic, layered palate of tangerine, persimmon, celery stalks, rock salt, burnt brown sugar, sweet smoke, and cinnamon sticks. This wine benefits from a couple of hours in the decanter and is incredibly versatile with a range of foods: herbed poultry, potatoes roasted in duck fat, pot pies, salty pork, and cheeses. Perdigão, Quinta Do 2013 Dão Encruzado

This is a spicy, rich, and warming white wine (yes, a warming white wine!) from organically-farmed vines in Portugal's fertile Dão region. Winemakers who work with the obscure and fragrant Encruzado grape report great potential for aging, although it is more commonly found in blends. This vintage of Quinta do Perdigão's 100% Encruzado is fresh and minerally, yet herbal and honeyed, with notes of citrus rind, peach, pine needles, fennel and musk. This wine is a phenomenal pairing for curried noodles and roasted pork with herbs. Ariana Rolich

Mas Marer 2012 Montsant

Another delicious wine from Sara Perez and Rene Barbier Junior, Mas Marer (formerly known as Mas Sorrer) is made from 40% Garnacha, 30% Syrah, 15% Cabernet, and 15% Merlot, grown organically in the granitic soils around Falset in Spain's Monsant appellation. Full-bodied, juicy, and energizing, with flavors of rich, ripe raspberry and sour cherry, fresh tarragon, olives, and strong, clear earthy tone inflected with warm, spicy and sweet strawberry on the finish. A crowd-pleaser and terrific bargain! Ariana Rolich

Gorrondona, Doniene 2013 Bizkaiko Txakolina Tinto

It's not every day that we have the pleasure of drinking a red Txakolina and this one is fantastic, from 2 hectares of 100+ year old, organically farmed, bush trained vines of the Hondarribi Beltza grape. Purple flowers and pink peppercorns grace the nose alongside brambly and beautiful black raspberry fruit that continues onto the structured but pleasurable, medium-bodied palate of boysenberry, rhubarb, tart berry seeds and red currants. Versatile at the dinner table and highly recommended for lovers of Loire Valley Cabernet Francs! Ariana Rolich

Sierra de Toloño 2012 Rioja Tempranillo

Winemaker Sandra Bravo Marin crafts this bright and beautiful young Rioja from biodynamically farmed Tempranillo vines at 650m altitude in La Bastida (not far from the great Remelluri estate). Tart cherry, rich red plum, and cool mossy earth on the nose, with an exuberant, medium-bodied palate of crisp cranberry, sweet raspberry and wild cherries, with an earthy, mineral-laden finish. This is a Rioja of extreme quality and versatility in this price range and highly recommended. Ariana Rolich

Marañones, Bodegas 2010 Vinos de Madrid San Martin Garnacha

100% Garnacha from 50-70 year old vines grown on granite soils with gneiss and schist at 750-850 meters. This is a proper high-altitude Garnacha from the San Martin de Valdeglesias subzone of the Vinos de Madrid D.O., with tart, cool aromas of strawberry, cranberry, red currants, and raspberry seeds; the palate is structured and penetrating, with wild berries, chewy berry skins, scratchy tannins, and dark herbal flavors of oregano and minty eucalyptus. Serious, delicious, and balanced in its breadth. Ariana Rolich

Saó del Coster 2010 Priorat "S" de Saó del Coster

Sao del Coster is our go-to for affordable, organically (and biodynamically) farmed wines from the Priorat. "S" is their entry level wine, a sophisticated blend that displays great depth and mineral expression for the price. Future releases will focus on local Priorat varieties Garnacha and Carignan, but the 2010 is a blend of Garnacha, Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah. Plums and crushed purple berries unite with savory earth, rich tarragon, and velvety tannins for a perfect wintry accompaniment to stews, roasts, and steaks. Ariana Rolich

Mouraz, Casa de 2010 Dão Tinto

Sara Dionísio and António Lopes Ribeiro are at the forefront of organic (certified) and biodynamic wine growing in Portugal. And the wines keep getting better and better! This one is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, Jaen, Água Santa, Tinta Pinheira and Baga from multiple vineyards planted on granitic soils in the Dao, co-fermented with native yeasts and raised in neutral French barrels for 8 months. The aromatics are savory and invigorating, full of olives, oregano, and lavender that linger behind the juicy purple berry and black cherry fruit that washes over the palate with blueberries, cafe-au-lait, spicy pepper, leather, and a refreshing bolt of acidity. The winery recommends pairing this with duck dishes and soft cheeses… How delicious! Ariana Rolich

Quinta Dos Pocos 2012 Douro Vinho Tinto

Quinta Dos Pocos is an old family estate in the Baixo Corgo area of the Douro, surrounded by 25 hectares of vines on slate soils. This traditional Douro blend includes Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca. It is elegant and old fashioned, with aromas of bright florals and cinnamon spice, and a long, rich palate of dark berries, spicy red plums, paprika, thyme, coffee, and lots of dry earth and slatey mineral tone on the finish. A stately wine for romantic wintry occasions! Ariana Rolich

Sidónio de Sousa 2011 Bairrada Tinto

We love the rich, feral Portuguese variety Baga - the great red grape of the Bairrada DOC, which abuts Portugal's Dão region and enjoys a mild, maritime climate. Sidónio de Sousa's Baga is as good as it gets, from 90-year-old vines, fermented whole-cluster and raised for 12 months in ancient Portuguese oak. Pepper and rose petals on the nose, with wild flavors of black currant, red currant, oregano, and rye combine with pine needles, purple flowers, and funky damp earth. It's hard not to dream of roasted or grilled meat with this wine! Ariana Rolich
