Les Picaudières

The Superb 2012 Crozes-Hermitages from Domaine Rousset!

Share

Beginning with the 2009 vintage, and based on a recommendation from Jean Gonon, we have been featuring the wonderful Crozes-Hermitages and Saint-Joseph from Stéphan and Isabelle Rousset.  Stephane's great uncle was the legendary Raymond Roure, from whom the Roussets purchased the "Picaudières" vineyard in Gervans - it's one of the best vineyards in the region with terraces cut out of the granite and old vines planted in high density, dating back to the 1930s. Unlike most Crozes-Hermitage producers, all the Rousset's parcels are on slopes, mostly granite but with a small amount of clay-limestone as well, giving the wines more affinity to Hermitage than to the modern styles of forward and fruity Crozes-Hermitage grown on the flats. Which brings us to 2012, a vintage that we like in the northern Rhone, combining bright supple fruit, relatively low alcohol and great terroir expression. This is the best vintage we have received from the Roussets, with even the "basic" Crozes-Hermitage showing beautiful cool, complex fruit and oustanding minerality. The 2012 "Les Picaudières" is a superb northern Rhone Syrah that will repay three to five years of cellaring and will drink beautifully at least another ten to fifteen years. While the 2012 Saint-Joseph, from 40 to 65 year-old vines in "Les Rivoires" above Tournon, is tighter and less forward, it's a unique wine of terroir with dark, distinctive fruit. And don't overlook the Rousset's 2013 Crozes-Hermitage Blanc, from 50 to 90 year-old Marsanne vines which offers lovely flavors of lemon, stone, pear and spice - it's a fabulous value!

The Roussets are not exactly media stars - they're happy to sell their wines to local customers and restaurants. You won't find a website or reviews in the press, but these are among the finest values in the northern Rhone Valley and they deserve your attention!

Rousset 2012 Crozes-Hermitage

100% Syrah from 45 year-old vines on hillside vineyards in Erôme, Gervans and Crozes, on both granite and clay/limestone soils. Cool, minty blackberry liqueur with violet and graphite, really pure and lovely. Blackberry/black cherry on the palate with a bit of garrigue. Medium-bodied and not at all heavy with good acidity and a real mineral kick in the finish. Lovely now, this will improve nicely over the next few years. This a beautiful Crozes from fine terroir that's an outstanding value!

Rousset 2012 Crozes-Hermitage Les Picaudières

Certainly one of the best sites in Crozes-Hermitage, "les Picaudières" is a steep, south-facing granite hill with high-density old vines, formerly owned by the legendary Raymond Roure. The 2012 "Les Picaudières" from Robert and Stephane Rousset reflects the qualities of this excellent vintage in the Northern Rhône with bright fruit, medium-body and good underlying acidity and mineral character. Elegant aromas of high-toned red and black fruit liqueur with dusty stone, game and bitter chocolate. Cool, smooth-textured black fruit on the palate with citrusy acids, berry fruit and stone in the very long finish. Great now, if a bit intense, best 2017 to 2025. This is an old-fashioned wine of terroir that is more Hermitage than Crozes; bravo to the Roussets!

Rousset 2012 Saint-Joseph

From old vines in "Les Rivoires" above Tournon. More austere than usual, the Rousset 2012 Saint-Joseph really shows the mineral side with firm acidity and saline stone flavors. With time open there is elegant floral red and black fruit, game, pepper and menthol. Not at all "fruit forward" this needs decanting or five years in the cellar to reveal its charms as a true Saint-Joseph of terroir.

Rousset 2013 Crozes-Hermitage Blanc

From 60 to 90 year-old Marsanne vines in the hillside vineyards of "les Vedias" and "Tout" in Erôme, decomposed granite with clay and gravel. Pretty aromas of lemon, stone, pear, hay and spice. The palate is light with white fruits and stone flavors—a nice apéritif and great with fish in sauce, chicken and mild cheeses.
