Pépière 2012 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson

Beginning in 2005, Marc Ollivier has produced this cuvée from a small parcel of 50 to 110 year-old vines within the Pepiere vineyard. Originally called "Granite de Clisson" after the unique bedrock in the vineyard, Marc has changed the name to "Clisson" to agree with the new INAO Cru Communal classification. The granite is covered with gravel and clay with large stones, ensuring good drainage and deep penetration by the roots into the fissures in the bedrock, bringing the mineral elements indispensable to this wine. The 2012 Clisson, kept on the lees for 24 months, is a gorgeous wine that seems perfectly balanced at 13% alcohol, with very firm acidity, intense aromatics and terrific density on the palate. The wine is a bit closed due to the recent bottling (November 2014) compared with our tasting from vat last February, but still shows sharp floral aromas with white fruits, dried herbs, lemon and stone. Dense pear, apple, citrus, stone, mushroom and anise coat the palate with high viscosity and very firm acids with fabulous length of citrus, white fruits and saline minerals. Beautiful now in its youthful intensity, best at 10 to 20 years of age - bravo, again, to Marc and Rémi!

Pépière 2010 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Quatre

The 2010 Cuvée Quatre is two-thirds from very old vines on granite of Chateau Thébaud and one-third from vines on the less porous granite of Clisson and was bottled at 12.5% alcohol in November of 2014 after 48 months on the lees. Tasted in February of 2014 the wine showed superb aromas of yellow and white fruits with bitter stone flavors and fabulous length. Tasted on arrival in NY, the wine shows a more secondary mid-palate with earth, mushroom, almond and dried pear with classic aromas of dried herbs, citrus peel and stone. This will age beautifully and meanwhile drink happily with full-flavored oysters, halibut and swordfish. (A year later, November 2015, the wine has tightened up a bit and is showing even better, with a density and structure for long aging. This should be very interesting in 15 years...)

Immich-Batterieberg 2012 Mosel C.A.I. Riesling

As in previous years, C.A.I. tastes close to dry and is a blend of purchased fruit (from smart, committed growers) up and down the Mosel and Saar. This year is particularly interesting as there are some old vine parcels in the blend from the Oberemmeler Altenberg that bring great depth to the wine. According to Lars Carlberg, this old vine parcel may be bottled as a separate wine in 2013; it's that good. This C.A.I. is much more like the 2010 in character than the 2011, although not quite as vigorous and biting as the former. Tasty, tasty Riesling! JFR

Unashamedly easy to enjoy. Plenty of crisp acids but they are gently integrated with sensations of perfectly ripe nectarine. Wildly versatile, eminently tasty, but not a moment goes by while drinking this wine that you don't seriously reflect on the fortuitous mix of elements in the vineyard and the cellar that created such a high level of deep pleasure. Immich-Batterieberg 2012 Mosel Escheburg Riesling

2012 Escheburg has a very different makeup from the 2011, with the majority of the fruit coming from old vines in the Batterieberg vineyard with an average vine-age of 60 years. At just 7.5 g/l RS, this dry mid-tier wine (a blend of multiple sites but all estate fruit, nothing purchased), continues to be the best introduction to the Immich-Batterieberg style as well as the perfect value wine for those who can't commit to the pricier wines. JFR

Intensely satisfying, lemon-y refreshment. Integrated elements bound with an exciting, linear structure. Simply exploding with citrus and the sensation of vibrant sunshine. JK

Koehler-Ruprecht 2012 Pfalz Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling Kabinett

From the chalk and sandstone soils of Steinacker, this is a delicious, complex Kabinett that finished fermenting with just a touch of residual sugar, but has a brooding, dark, spicy character. The depth and mystery of this wine is also complemented by excellent cut and acidity. Overall, there is a fantastic mix of elements at play here—salty, savory, slightly sweet, fat, and rich. Alcohol is a delicate 10.5%. Highly recommended. Jonathan Kemp

Koehler-Ruprecht 2012 Pfalz Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett Trocken

Hailing from their Saumagen vineyard, south to southeast-facing with a blend of predominately limestone with marl, the must spontaneously ferments and ages in used, German oak of various sizes. Delicate straw, stoniness, and salt on the nose, the palate shows bright acidity, notes of honeysuckle, mango, peach candy, and citrus peel with great balance and tension. Showing quite well now (re-tasted June 2016) but as expected from Koehler-Ruprecht, can definitely age. Cari Bernard

Pinon 2013 Vouvray Le 2013

Francois Pinon lost most of his 2012 crop to a devastating hailstorm, which was followed by 2013 - a vintage of tiny yields due to poor weather at flowering, frost and mildew. The Pinons made only one wine in 2013, "Le Vouvray," a quite beautiful Vouvray featuring delicate aromas of lime-flower, citrus, stone, honey and pear. The palate is light, but round with mineral flavors, stone, honey and white fruits. Subtle, silky and quite pretty this would be a great aperitif, or serve with fish in sauce, chicken and mild cheeses.

Pinon, François 2005 Vouvray Cuvée Botrytis 500ml

A great version of Pinon's cuvée Botrytis, the 2005 has wonderful lemon confit, herbal and tea leaf aromas, and lovely stone and citrus flavors on the palate. Very long and quite sweet, superb! (10.7 alcohol, 152 gr/L RS)

Baudry 2011 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

2011 is a very good vintage for the Baudry Clos Guillot as the well-drained hillside vineyard on "tuffeau jaune" suffered less from the wet conditions in the spring. This is a superbly elegant Chinon, with subtle, cool, minty red and black fruits and refreshing acidity. Lovely to drink now served cool, this will repay five to fifteen years of cellaring—really a lovely Burgundian style! (Last of inventory)

Coudert (Clos de la Roilette) 2012 Fleurie Griffe du Marquis

Alain Coudert's homage to his father Fernand is a superb Fleurie that will need three to five years in the cellar and should drink beautifully over the next ten to fifteen years or more. This is the same juice as the great 2012 Cuvée Tardive, aged in two to six year-old barriques and bottled a year later. From eighty year-old vines on clay and granite soil.. Deep aromas of meaty blackberry and strawberry confit, violets and mint. Intense palate of berry liqueur, plum, stone and earth with fabulous length and firm, even slightly bitter acids. Earthy fruit coats the palate in the finish — ripe but balanced at 13% alcohol. This will be a great mature wine, perhaps best between 2020 — 2025.

Peillot 2013 Roussette du Bugey Montagnieu Altesse

Where, exactly, is Bugey? Even the most committed wine geeks often do not know the answer to this question. Bugey comprises hills at the very southern tip of the Jura mountain range, but is, in fact, closer to the Savoie than to the Jura in distance (and the wines are more akin to the wines of the Savoie than to those of the Jura...) Interestingly, also, the vineyards of Montagnieu overlook the Rhône Valley and there is a certain ripe, Rhône-ish aspect to this Altesse in some vintages. Franck Peillot has long been a favorite of ours, and his Altesse (known also as Roussette), is lovely in 2013. Grown on limestone soil, the wine offers pretty honey and orchard fruits on the nose: floral pear, white peach and citrus while maintaining an underlying stoniness and minerality on the palate, and the long finish is like an alpine stream. Peillot 2013 Bugey Mondeuse

The 2013 Mondeuse from Franck Peillot is pleasantly a bit lighter than usual with lovely fresh red-currant fruit, spicy and bright. Really quite pretty and finishes with citrusy red fruits and refreshing acidity. This will be nice, served quite cool, with charcuterie, grilled chicken, and any lighter meals.

Peillot NV Bugey Montagnieu Brut

This is a really lovely alternative to Champagne and a great value. Montagnieu is a village south of Cerdon, in the Jura, with premières côtes overlooking the Rhône valley. This wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Altesse and Mondeuse and has complex herbal aromas, nice lemony ripeness on the palate and a long, dry finish. Franck Peillot works well in the vineyard and naturally in the cellar. Well worth a try!

Possible (Loic Roure) 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Charivari

We met Loic Roure in the Loire Valley this past January and are very happy to have his wines at CSW. This is a small Domaine in the Roussillon, just west of Perpignan, close to the Spanish border. Roure works without chemicals in the vineyard, preferring small machines to larger plows. The wines are generally bottled with no sulfur though a small amount is used occasionally. Charivari is Roure's 100% Carignan bottling, vinified entirely using cold carbonic maceration. This is a fresh wine, fruit and funk mingling on the nose and giving way to a mouthful of dark, tangy fruits such as blackberry, plum, and black currant. Give this bottle some time to open up and make sure to serve it chilled! -msb

De Bartoli 2008 Sicilia Grillo Integer

Long known for his Marsala wines, Marco de Bartoli began experimenting with dry whites when his three children joined the family business in the mid 90’s. Because it has high levels of sugar and oxidizes easily, Grillo was best known for making these fortified wines but by the mid-19th century planting decreased significantly and the high yields of Catarratto took over. However, with improved viticultural and vinicultural techniques Grillo has seen a resurgence in Sicily and is now set to rival Italy’s most popular white wines. Bartoli’s INTEGER cuvée is fermented and aged in old oak with battonage, giving it a deep golden color and oxidative flavor. It’s intensely fruity and floral, round and refreshing with good acidity. Best enjoyed with seafood or light pastas, as well as cheese or fresh fruit. Christine Manula

Tarlant NV Champagne Brut Rosé Zero

Tarlant pulls off smart austerity with enough charm, character and nuanced flavor to make for compelling and food-oriented Champagne. The NV Rosé (in this case based on the superb 2008 vintage) shows off red fruits such as currant and raspberry, which are interestingly contrasted by a spicy note that borders on being peppery. Not overtly creamy, this Rosé is extrememly minerally and elegant. (85% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Noir -- non-dosé -- disgorged 6/13)

Tarlant NV Champagne Extra Brut Cuvée Louis (1999 base)

This wine really stood out at a tasting with Benoit Tarlant this winter. Based on the 1999 vintage with '98, '97, and '96 in the bottle as well, the wine is vinified in barrel, without malolactic fermentation, and is bottled Extra Brut (2 grams of sugar). 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this is a toasty, cheesy, nutty, savory bottle of wine that will resonate with mature Champagne lovers.
